Interview With Joëlle Anthony

Today I have author of The Right & The Real Joëlle Anthony on the blog for my first every author interview! I read this novel back in March and I absolutely loved it! So it's a pleasure to have her here today.

Alluring Reads: What was your inspiration for writing The Right & The Real? Why did you choose the cult like subject matter?
Joëlle Anthony: It started out less about cults and more about a girl on her own. Then I had to come up with a reason a young teen would be kicked out, so I dug around, and that’s what I came up with.

AR: Did you have to do much research on the subject matter? What findings helped you in writing this novel?
JA:There’s always some research, even on the things you know. For example, I was a theatre major at University, but I didn’t do musical theatre, so the writer/singer/actress, Joelle Charbonneau acted as my musical theatre expert. And for the cult stuff, I watched a lot of shows like 20/20 on Youtube. My cousin is an Oregon State Trooper, and he read all the scenes to make sure I portrayed the police accurately, and followed the law. Although, you do have to have some creative license and while I think he would’ve preferred all my officers to be polite, it didn’t really seem realistic to me in certain situations.

Click cover to add it to your GoodReads
AR: I really admired how strong and level headed Jamie was despite the heavy situations she was facing, was it difficult to create a realistic teenage character with these traits?
JA: Jamie comes across as level headed, but I think sometimes, she simply making choices out of fear. I tried to imagine what it might be like for me to be in her situation, and I would be so scared of living on the street that finding a skanky motel is probably something I would do. Whereas other teens might just live in their car.
AR: There was a strong message in this book to teens about the value of critical thinking, what motivated you to convey that message?
JA: I don’t ever set out to convey a message, but sometimes they come about on their own. The thing I hope teens will get from this book is that sometimes secrets are more harmful than the consequences of keeping them. Jamie might appear to act strong, but actually, her biggest weakness is her inability to ask for help and to trust the people who love her.

AR: What character in The Right & The Real do you identify with most?
JA: Well, I am a bit of a blabbering fool like Trent! I mean, I hope I’m not now, but some of the stuff he says are things I probably would’ve said in high school because I was nervous around the opposite sex.

AR: What does your writing room look like?
JA: I am the proud owner of a fabulous little writing cabin. We just had it built last fall, and you can take a tour of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENS-vFPcmL4

AR: Who are some of your favorite authors?
JA: John Rowe Townsend (British, loads of YA, has been a mentor to me for twenty years), Nevil Shute (possibly the best storyteller ever), Maud Hart Lovelace (Betsy-Tacy series…one of my biggest influences), and Paula Danziger (met her, she had purple sparkly Doc Marten boots!). More contemporary writers I like are Eileen Cook, Kerry Madden, Lisa Lutz, Sara Zarr, A.S. King, Jerry Spinelli, and J.K. Rowling.

AR: What drew you to the YA genre? Why did you decide it was the place for you?
JA: It’s really very simple. YA is what I love to read. I also like teens because they have so much optimism. When writing for adults about serious subjects, the writing is often so glum. Teens have this great outlook and so do I, so I identify with them more than I do adults.

AR: I read in your bio that you, at one time, gave acting a shot. What is the most memorable moment for you from that part of your life?
JA: I worked as a professional actor in the play Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding for ten months, doing two hundred performances. I was cast in various roles, but mostly I played the dorky bridesmaid. TTW is a mix of scripted parts and improvisation, and I have to say all the improvising with the audience was my favourite thing ever. I could do that show two hundred more times and never get tired of it.

AR: If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have one book with you for the rest of time, what would that book be?
JA: How to Survive on a Desert Island for Dummies.

AR: What are some of your early influences that shaped your writing style? (music, books, movies etc.)
JA: The theatre in general influences the way I build characters and also write scenes. My husband’s music (www.victoranthony.ca) inspires me all the time and I’m constantly trying to work music into my books. In Restoring Harmony, it was the fiddle and piano. In R&R, it’s musical theatre. In the new book I’m writing now, my character plays piano and sings, but only for herself (her dad is an ageing rock star). And I do think I see things cinematically, which comes from all the movies I watched when I was younger. When I’m writing, I know exactly what everything looks like – from my characters’ clothes to the world around them – in minute detail, even if I can’t put it in the book.

Thanks for having me!

A writing cabin? Awesome, right?! You can read my glowing review of The Right & The Real here.

SYNOPSIS I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that’s not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can’t seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted – and then she was a wolf. All snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That’s about the time I went into shock… And that was the moment he showed up.

Now, all I can do is accept the truths that are staring me in the face. One, Werewolves do exist. And Two, I was born to kill them.

Dirty Blood is a fun, captivating ride that will leave you swooning into the night.  There were parts of this novel where I questioned the actions of some of the characters. For instance, Tara getting into a car with a complete stranger who just showed up in her bedroom and going God knows where, but in the end all of that was forgivable because the story was THAT damn good!

Tara was a great MC, she was sassy, intelligent, and tried her hardest to be as independent as possible.  She was also quite resourceful, up until reading this I had never thought of using a plunger as a weapon and I thank Heather for bringing that option to my attention. Wes was the perfectly sexy, rough, and tough guy and the scenes between him and Tara had me begging for everything to go just a little farther (did I get my wish? You'll have to read it and see!) The supporting characters in Dirty Blood are also well developed and I liked every single one.  Jack and Fee were so sweet, and their strong, assured stance in their position of power had even me looking up to them.

This novel really prospers in the werewolf/hunter lore that it creates.  It gives them a fresh new history that has not been seen anywhere before. The tales are rich and engaging.  I often find myself bored with back story, but this kept me wanting to learn more as it was totally new and interesting.  There are also a few twists and turns along the way that made reading it that much more fun.

I highly recommend giving Dirty Blood a go, it's a strong start to a promising series.

Feature & Follow (9)

YAY! It's that time of the week for Feature & Follow! This weeks question:

Q: Have you ever had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then "broke-up" with later on in either the series or stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her.
For me the one character that sticks out like a sore thumb after pondering this question is Edward Cullen. Yes, Mr. McDreamy from Twilight. I'm not sure that I necessarily broke up with him while reading the series, though I have definitely stomped out that flame now. Like seriously stomped... and then spit on it. I read the whole series again recently, after my utter disgust with the movies made me question why I ever liked it in the first place, and I was so turned off by Edward. He's seriously a Stage 5 creeper, there was nothing in my second reading of the series that made me even remotely like him! He's weird! He's not sweet, he's a big ol' stalker! And he is so possesive that it's almost scary.

So yeah, this question sent me on a bit of a rant! I can't wait to see everyones answers, this is a good question for sure.  Leave me a link, I always stop by ;)

And while you're here make sure to stop by and enter my Blog Revamp Giveaway you can win a hardcover copy of The Immortal Rules or Masque Of The Read Death, your pick!

Waiting On Wednesday (11)

Cursed
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected publication: September 18th 2012 by Spencer Hill Press

Dying sucks--and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not've been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

I LOVED Obsidian by Armentrout, though I haven't read any of the Half Blood series, I really enjoy her writing.  It's very engrossing and she knows how to write a swoon-worthy romance so well.  It does seem to me that it's a little reminiscent of the Denazen series by Jus Accardo, but I hope Jennifer keeps it original and gives the whole concept a new view.

So what are you waiting on this week? Leave a link, I always stop by!

SYNOPSIS In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was a tough one for me. There were parts of The Immortal Rules that I loved, but there was so much filler in between. I'm all for filler, I know that it needs to be there, a story can't be all action all the time. But there was just so much walking! All the elements of a really great story are there, I just felt that this one could have been a lot shorter.  I won't deny that it is a good novel, I just have issue with the length. I put it down and read something else 3 times before I made it to the end.

The characters of The Immortal Rules are what really stuck out to me. I loved that Julie Kagawa gave us vampires that make us cringe and scared to go to the bathroom at night, the rabids were all kinds of creepy awesomeness.  Allison was a seriously kick-ass girl, she had her head on her shoulders and she was completely independent.  The visuals of her wielding her katana and cutting through hoards of rabids were absolutely stunning. Her love interest Zeke was also interesting to me, his inner struggle with his teachings versus what he came to find in the real world was an engrossing journey. There are numerous supporting characters that are nicely developed and that I connected to as the story went on as well.

When the pace picks up in The Immortal Rules it delivers with a bang! But then they walk, and walk, and walk. Then it picks up and you get sucked back in and Allison kicks butt, and rabids attack and it's awesome! And then they walk.... and you check what page your on... and they walk... and you check the page number again... then you wonder how in the world they can still be walking...

This is not just another vampire book, it gives vampires some new, fresh twists that leaves me wanting more.  Though I have my qualms with this one, I will definitely be interested to read the sequel.

The Joy & Torture of Joshua James Review

SYNOPSIS Girls are difficult for 16-year-old Joshua James - especially the ones living right next door. This pair of sisters is more than he could have ever hoped for, and when both take an interest in Josh it’s all he can do to keep things straight.

Blonde Jordan is an angel, with a perfect body and adoring personality. Goth girl Jessa is the devil and much more than that… or so Joshua thinks. But when things start disappearing from his house, and the sisters wage a war of finger-pointing over Joshua, he must decide which one is crazier before he also disappears.

The Joy & Torture of Joshua James is a great little novella that I was sucked into and couldn't put down until I had devoured it all.  This story holds nothing back, Joshua is very blunt and his language is what some would call risqué. I wasn't too sure what I was in for when I started this but I was pleasantly surprised as it was an engrossing tale that had a great flow and felt very natural to read.

I'm not often a fan of male narrators, and in the beginning I did find it hard to connect to Joshua but as the story went on I realized he was the perfect, typical horny teenaged boy. There were alot of, let's say interesting people in Josh's life, from his self-medicating mother to his dads voyeuristic new girlfriend and "Gothic Gretchen" from next door.  There is no shortage of fascinating, well-developed characters in this one.

Julie Rieman Duck has woven a tale that will leave you guessing until the very last page, and longing for more.  I really hope there is more to come in the saga of Joshua James. If you're looking for an Alluring Read, give this great little novella a go!

I Hunt Killers Review

SYNOPSIS What if the world's worst serial killer...was your dad?

Jasper (Jazz) Dent is a likable teenager. A charmer, one might say.

But he's also the son of the world's most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could--from the criminal's point of view.

And now bodies are piling up in Lobo's Nod.

In an effort to clear his name, Jazz joins the police in a hunt for a new serial killer. But Jazz has a secret--could he be more like his father than anyone knows?

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga is a murder mystery like no other.  The fresh take on the age old 'nature vs. nurture' debate was haunting and engrossing.  For me, this was like being in a very intense episode of Criminal Minds mixed with just enough Dexter (two of my favourite shows!) We got to experience the mystery from many perspectives but the real gem here is Jasper. Not only did Jazz attempt to solve Lobo's Nods latest string of murders but he was also constantly trying to profile himself.  He was frightened of who he might be and what that may mean for those close to him.

The content of this novel is pretty edgy for the genre that it is in, it doesn't hold back on the gore, which was perfect! The "lessons" Billy taught Jazz as a young kid are appalling and presented an interesting look into the human psyche and how one deals with intense situations.  Jasper's mind set and the thought patterns that he went through as he attempted to figure himself out were mesmerising and a big part of what made this read so memorable for me. He often found himself questioning his sanity and motives in the exact same way that I, the reader, was.  Another interesting character is that of Dear Old Daddy himself, the monster, Billy Dent. His skewed view of reality and unapologetic demeanour added up to the worst kind of monster.

Not all of the characters in this book had dark motives.  Connie (Jazz's girlfriend) and Howie (his best friend) were great additions to the story.  Connie was seriously kick-ass, she didn't hold back and she looked all her fears right in the eyes. I really enjoyed her and thought she was a strong female character (which is so nice to see in YA these days.) Howie was also a strong character (not in the physical sense of course.) The parts with him and Jazz were always good for a laugh and provided a good contrast to the dark setting of the novel.

I Hunt Killers is more than just a murder mystery, it is an intense look at one kids mind.  I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an Alluring Read.

Sweet Evil
by Wendy Higgins
to be published May 1st, 2012

What if there were teens whose lives depended on being bad influences? This is life for sons and daughters of fallen angels in Sweet Evil.

Tenderhearted Southern girl, Anna Whitt, was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage, and her will-power is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

A cross-country trip to meet her father forces Anna to face the reality that hope and love are not options for her kind. When she confronts her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?
I'm always interested in the idea of a sixth sense, and anything with the line "the boy your daddy warned you about" is something I need to read NOW!  I'm hoping this isn't an "insta-love" story and that she has her head on her shoulders.  Also, look at that freaking dress!!! Luckily this won't be a very long wait.

So what are you waiting on this week??

SYNOPSIS Kicking off a riveting sci-fi trilogy, National Book Award winner Pete Hautman plunges us into a world where time is a tool - and the question is, who will control it?

The first time his father disappeared, Tucker Feye had just turned thirteen. The Reverend Feye simply climbed on the roof to fix a shingle, let out a scream, and vanished - only to walk up the driveway an hour later, looking older and worn, with a strange girl named Lahlia in tow. In the months that followed, Tucker watched his father grow distant and his once loving mother slide into madness. But then both of his parents disappear. Now in the care of his wild Uncle Kosh, Tucker begins to suspect that the disks of shimmering air he keeps seeing - one right on top of the roof - hold the answer to restoring his family. And when he dares to step into one, he's launched on a time-twisting journey
- from a small Midwestern town to a futuristic hospital run by digitally augmented healers, from the death of an ancient prophet to a forest at the end of time. Inevitably, Tucker's actions alter the past and future, changing his world forever.

The Obsidian Blade by Pete Hautman was my first time travel book, I read the synopsis and thought "Well, I LOVED Donnie Darko!" so I gave it a go.  What I read was a good, albeit confusing, piece of literature. I found myself really enjoying the story and caring about Tucker and the rest of the Feye's.  I don't think this book would be so confusing to me if I was a big fan of sci-fi and read within the genre alot more.  I had a hard time wrapping my head around the timing and the concept of the Klaatu in general.

The novel starts off as more of a contemporary story about a boy's life and the disintegration of his family.  Tucker Feye's mom becomes mentally ill and his father basically checks out because he can't deal.  I was sad for Tucker, he was kind of pushed to the side and left to fend for himself.  Dealing with a sick mother is something I know very well and it was hard to watch him cope with his mothers illness.  Halfway through  it becomes sci-fi and we start going with Tucker as he jumps through the diskos.  What really intrigued me during this half of the book was that they went to important historical events.  In one jump we land on top of the twin towers on 9/11 and in another we land on the hill of Golgatha and witness the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Though I cared for Tucker and the situation he was faced with, I didn't really connect with any characters in this book.  They felt very robotic and one dimensional to me.  My favourite would have to have been Curtis (Uncle Kosh) he was a dirty, rough biker with a finesse for cooking.  I felt like he was the only character that had depth for me to latch onto. So it was an interesting story, but not exactly one that drew alot of emotion out of me.

There is alot going on here and while I did enjoy the story overall, it was ALOT to wrap my head around and I just didn't quite get there.  At one point Tucker meets an old woman named Awn and I was sure that she would fill in some of the blanks in my head and connect point A to point B but she just served to confuse me even further!  The being said, as I pointed out this was deifinitely a venture into a new genre for me (trying to expand my horizons a bit) but I did enjoy it, it just hurt my head a bit.  I will be looking for the second book in this series though because we are left with quite the shocking cliffhanger and I simply must know what happens next!

I sat up and followed Calixta’s gaze upward. I rubbed my eyes. I didn’t know what I was seeing at first. A statue? My brain refused to snap together coherent thoughts.  I didn’t realize I’d fallen so close to one of the garden benches until I stared up at the boy that sat on one. He was strikingly beautiful. His tumble of blonde hair curled just above his sculpted cheekbones. He wore a silk shirt and a loosened cravat, like he’d become bored while dressing and decided to leave himself in disarray. His ivory skin and frozen position was what had me mistaking him for something carved from marble by Michelangelo. Then he sighed—a lonely, breathy proof of life. If I had to imagine what Lucifer looked like before he fell from heaven, the boy on the bench would certainly fulfill that image. My brain told me I had to look away, but I couldn’t.
“Luka,” Calixta said again, her voice unsure, almost nervous. It no longer contained the steel and bite she had threatened me with, which made me wonder who the boy was.
He leaned on his hands and crossed his legs, all the while keeping his eyes fixed on the night sky. His movements spoke of elegance and control. I’d encountered many people with breeding before, but his took on the air of arrogance and self-assuredness of someone used to getting what he wanted when he wanted it.
I only realized I’d been holding my breath when my lungs protested. I exhaled. My heart sputtered and restarted with a vengeance. Luka tore his gaze away from the stars and settled it on me. I’d expected pitch-black irises, like the other Night Students, but blue ice stared back at me.
“Human,” he whispered.
He reached out, and with a finger, followed an invisible trail down my cheek. I stiffened. His touch, cooler than Demitri’s, caused warm sparks to blossom on my face. He lifted his finger to his lips and licked its tip. He might as well have licked me from the way my body shivered.
Luka’s curious gaze held mine. “Leave us,” he said, but not to me.
“But—” Calixta protested like a spoiled child.
He spoke in a language I hadn’t heard before, remaining calm yet firm. The words had a rolling cadence I couldn’t quite follow, like rumbling thunder in the distance. They contained a harsh sensuality. The consonants were hard and the vowels were long and lilting.
Footsteps retreated behind me.
Luka reached out again.
It took me a minute to realize he wanted to help me up. I hesitated. He smiled. I smiled back timidly and took his hand, completely dazzled. Even with my uniform soaked from melted snow, I didn’t feel cold—all my attention was on him and the way his callused hand felt on mine. Without moving much from his seated position, he helped me stand.
“What’s your name?” he asked. He had a voice like a familiar lullaby. It filled my heart to the brim with comfort.
I swallowed and tried to stop gawking. “Phoenix.”
“The bird that rose from the ashes.” Luka bent his head and kissed the back of my hand. “It’s a pleasure meeting you.”
My cheeks warmed. My head reeled, not knowing what to think. I couldn’t understand why I felt drawn to him. And the strange connection frightened me.
From behind, someone gripped my arms and yanked me away before I could sort out the feelings Luka inspired in me. http://kateevangelistanovels.blogspot.com/p/lunar-heat.html I found myself behind a towering figure yet again. Recognizing the blue-black silk for hair tied at the nape, relief washed over me. Calixta hadn’t come back to finish me off.
Demitri’s large hand wrapped around my wrist. Unlike the night before, no calm existed in his demeanor. He trembled like a junky in need of a fix. The coiled power in his tense muscles vibrated into me.
“What are you doing here?” Demitri asked.
I didn’t know he’d spoken to me until I saw his expressionless profile. I sighed.
“Phoenix.”
I flinched. The ruthless way he said my name punched all the air out of me. “You owe me answers,” I said with as much bravado as I could muster.
“I owe you nothing.” He glared. “In fact, you owe me your life.”
“I don’t think so.”
Ignoring my indignation, he faced Luka, who’d remained seated on the bench during my exchange with Demitri. “Why is she with you, Luka?”
“I wasn’t going to taste her, if that’s what you’re implying,” Luka said. “Although, she is simply delicious. I wouldn’t mind if you left us alone.”
There it was again. Taste. The word that kept coming up between these Night Students and I was connected to it in an increasingly uncomfortable way. To taste meant to sample, but what? My flesh? They had to be joking because the alternative wasn’t funny.
“The sins of the father …” Demitri left his sentence unfinished.
Luka’s smile shifted into a snarl. “Obey my command.” His chin lifted. “Kneel.”
Demitri’s stance went rigid. His grip tightened around my wrist.
Okay, weird just got weirder. Why would Luka want Demitri to kneel before him? I thought back to Eli and the others bowing to Demitri when he questioned them, but they didn’t kneel. Seriously? Were they all living on a different planet or something?
Kneel.” Luka’s detestable smirk made his features sinister rather than angelic. The real Lucifer: a fallen angel.
Without letting go of my wrist, Demitri knelt down on one knee and bowed his head, his free hand flat at the center of his chest. “Your command has been obeyed,” he said formally.
Luka nodded once.
Demitri stood up and pulled me toward the school without telling me where we were going. Not having the time to thank Luka for saving me from Calixta, I risked a glance back. Luka smiled at me. His smile spoke of whispers, secrets, and promises to be shared on a later date.

About The Author: WebsiteTwitter / Facebook

When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels.
This looks like it is going to be a great read. The excerpt and trailer are awesome and I want more! What do you think? Will you be adding Taste to your TBR?  It's on mine!

What Are You Reading Monday (4)

Hey Guys!

Well it was another great week for reading! I did 3 reviews and every single one was 5 stars.  I know a really bad book must be lurking around the corner because I have been getting way too lucky with my selections lately.

What I read last week:

Click cover to read my review!

I loved every one of these books. Fairystruck was the 3rd book in the Songs of Magic series by J.L. Bryan and Entangled was the 1st book in the Spellbound series by Nikki Jefford.  They are both indie books and they are AMAZING! Thirteen Reasons Why is an older book that I had recommended to me from a fellow blogger, and I am so happy she recommended it.  It was such an eye opening read.

What I plan to read this week:

Thirteen Reasons Why Review

TITLE Thirteen Reasons Why
AUTHOR Jay Asher
PAGES 167 (ePub edition)
PUBLISHED October 18th 2007 by Razorbill
READ April 10 - 11, 2012
BUY IT Amazon / Kobo / Chapters.Indigo

SYNOPSIS Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers thirteen cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers
"In the end, everything matters."

School is supposed to be a safe place for kids to go, a place where they can be themselves and better themselves.  But high school is anything but a safe-haven, high school is scary, high school is mean, high school is a bully. Thirteen Reasons why is the story of the events that led up to high school junior Hannah Baker taking her life.  Hannah didn't feel like she could be herself anywhere she went, school was cruel to her and her sense of well-being at home was compromised by a creepy fellow student.  Even her own thoughts were put out in the open without her approval and ridiculed relentlessly right in front of her.

Jay Asher presented a very unique writing style with this novel.  We get the narrative of Hannah through the tapes, but we experience it as Clay Jensen, one of the reasons on Hannah's list.  This style worked so well, it flowed perfectly and both perspectives were excellently written.  I felt terrible for Hannah, I read a lot of people who wrote that Hannah's reason's weren't good enough and at that I laugh.  Everyone handles situations differently and I feel for a junior just entering high school she went through way too much. I also  felt a connection to Clay, even though he didn't exactly fit on the list with all the others he played a pretty significant part in Hannah's story.  I believed the roller coaster of emotions he went on while listening to her tapes and I empathised with his reactions.  There are a lot of characters weaved into this story (a bakers dozen to be exact) and they all fit so well.  I hated most of them, as they all came across as pretty damn selfish, but that was the point right?

This is an important story that has a great meaning.  This story is about stepping back and realising how our actions affect those around us (in high school that never happens, it's a very self absorbed place.) It's also about seeing those around us, and really seeing them, paying attention to their emotions and caring enough to show it.  For me, a very significant part of Thirteen Reasons Why was when the guy working at Rosie's diner gave Clay his milkshake for free.  He saw someone having a hard time, he knew Clay was going through something heavy and he wanted to help out in any way he could, no matter how small the motion was. He wanted to let Clay know that someone cared, there are so many people in this book who should have done just that, showed that they gave a damn.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is a touching story that I will definitely be recommending to anyone looking for an alluring read.

Feature & Follow (8)

Time for the blog hop! I love this meme because everyone always has such differing answers and I love reading every single one of them. This weeks question:

What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaptation of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

This fear applies to almost every book that I love.  It is very hard for a movie to live up to any book because the attention to detail just can't be as full.  Details need to be skipped over to come in under a certain amount of time and I feel that leaving things to the imagination always makes things much more interesting.  With that said, the one book that I would be nervous for would be Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout.  Daemon is such a jerk that I think it would be hard for anyone to fulfill the role and still make me fall in love with him as I did in the book.  Also, the effects of the aliens in their Luxen form would be hard to pull off without it looking cheesy, it looks so beautiful in my head.

So what about you? I can't wait to see everyones answers! Leave me a link, I always stop by :)

Waiting on Wednesday (9)

Duplicity (Spellbound #2)
by Nikki Jefford
Expected publication: May 2012 by Nikki Jefford

If Graylee Perez thought sharing a body with her twin sister was bad, dealing with a duplicate of herself is two times worse. Gray the second doesn’t seem to get that her boyfriend, Raj McKenna, is off limits. Then there’s the problem of Adrian Montez (aka: The Avenger). He expects one of the Grays to be his.

Nearly a year later the council is onto Gray for past misdeeds. Everyone in their coven has lost control of their powers and duplicate Gray is being stalked by what looks like the Grim Reaper.

If both girls work together, they may stand a chance of setting things right and making it out alive.

A duplicate Gray? WOW! I wondered how the sequel to this series would go and it sounds as if it will be another interesting tale to watch unfold.  I can't stress enough how much I love the covers in this series, they are soooo very pretty.  I just finished Entangled and loved every minute of it (review will be up Thursday morning.) I can't wait to meet back up with Graylee Perez and hopefully watch her and Raj's relationship heat up!

So, what are YOU waiting on this fine Wednesday? Leave me a link, I always stop by!

Fairystruck Review

TITLE Fairystruck (Songs of Magic #3)
AUTHOR J.L. Bryan
PAGES 204 (epub format)
PUBLISHED March 17th 2012 by www.jlbryanbooks.com
READ April  6 - 9, 2012

With their first single shooting up the Billboard charts, the Zebras hit the road as the opening band for an epic stadium tour across America. The future looks bright for the band...if they can survive the rioting fans, Queen Mab of Faerie, the dullahan, and some evil teddy bears.

Aoide the Lutist and Liadan the banshee wolf cross into man-world on the trail of the stolen fairy instruments. Aoide is shocked at the strangeness of life among the humans, but she also learns about a thrilling new kind of music never heard in Faerie...rock and roll.

Fairystruck, the 3rd instalment in the Songs of Magic series by J.L. Bryan, is another book that I could not put down.  This series has me longing for more, as it makes me laugh and intrigues me like no other series I've ever read.  In this novel we get more of the amazing forays into Faerie and we get to go on tour with the now Rioting Zebras.  The glitz and glamour they have been treated to at the hands of Marlarkay Records is stripped away and it felt as if they were a real band trying to make it on the road.

My favourite part of Fairystruck is Aiode's innocent ignorance as she enters the man-world and learns about our "horseless man carriages" and barters her way around.  She had me laughing out loud at times and my kids looking at me as if mommy had lost her marbles.  The thing that has always stood out to me in this series is the vivid imagination of Mr. Bryan and the intricate attention to detail that brings it all together perfectly.  Let me say, this one does not let up in that department, I will never look at teddy bears the same way again. The human side of things is getting more and more intertwined with the Otherworld and the scenarios that occur are utterly entertaining.

The characters are strong as ever, I find myself attached to both Jason and Erin as they grow closer to each other.  Their relationship didn't make too much progress in this one, but I feel like Erin and Zach's relationship took a few steps back which is a good start.  I, once again, am left so curious about Erin and her link to the Faerie world.  Katie is also brought to the foreground, and seeing her interactions with the dullahan were unsettling but added some very welcome viewpoints in the dullahans private quarters.  Her home is an eerie place and a setting that I've craved more of since Fairy Metal Thunder.

The Songs of Magic series has found a perfect pace, as we switched through perspectives I found myself excited to see where we would go as I turned the pages.  This is a very well written indie series that will leave you pining for more.  I feel as though this one ended quite abruptly, and as we leave our characters in the thick of things, the wait for Fairyland (Summer 2012) will be painstakingly long.  I highly recommend picking up these books and giving them a go, you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

What Are You Reading Monday (3)

This week I was lucky enough to win a book in a series that I absolutely fell in love with, then I got even MORE lucky and the author sent me the two other books in the series!  As I said at the beginning of last week, it was a busy one, and I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked, but I read some great books when I snuck in some time.
