Don't Turn Around Review

TITLE Don't Turn Around  (PERSEFoNE Trilogy #1)
AUTHOR Michelle Gagnon
PUBLICATION August 28, 2012 by HarperCollins
READ August 18 - 19, 2012

Sixteen-year-old Noa has been a victim of the system ever since her parents died. Now living off the grid and trusting no one, she uses her computer-hacking skills to stay safely anonymous and alone. But when she wakes up on a table in an empty warehouse with an IV in her arm and no memory of how she got there, Noa starts to wish she had someone on her side.

Enter Peter Gregory. A rich kid and the leader of a hacker alliance, Peter needs people with Noa’s talents on his team. Especially after a shady corporation threatens his life. But what Noa and Peter don’t realize is that Noa holds the key to a terrible secret, and there are those who’d stop at nothing to silence her for good.

Filled with action, suspense, and romance, this first book in a new trilogy offers readers nonstop thrills.

If you're looking for an action packed thrill ride, Don't Turn Around is for you! I wasn't too sure what to expect going into this novel but the cover really sucked me in from the first moment I saw it. What I got was a mix of the movie Hackers and the Jason Bourne series, which was a very welcome blend. With that said, if you are looking for a story that will touch you emotionally, this one isn't for you. While I appreciated the pulse pounding action, it did feel like there was a bit too much adrenaline and not enough substance.

First, I'll start with what I feel could use some work in this novel. The character development felt like it was put on the back burner and the focus left solely on the action. Noa was quite one dimensional to me . I understand that she had been through a lot and that resulted in her being quite reclusive but there were plenty of opportunities for us to have gotten a bit more emotion from her even if it was only when she was alone through her inner dialogue. Feeling the way I did about Noa I had thought that maybe I would be able to form a better bond with Peter, but he didn't merit any emotional connection from me either.

Now for what I did like. There isn't really a romance to be had here, I had expected Noa and Peter to fall madly in love through their adventure, but surprisingly that did not happen. This was a welcome surprise for me! In YA it seems it is a must to have a romance in the story, but Michelle Gagnon has weaved a story that stands on its own two legs without angst or mushiness. I have read quite a few books lately where the love story has felt forced and out of place, it's quite rare to see an author in this genre basically leave it out.

Where romance is lacking, mystery is there to take its place, and does it ever! I had so many questions throughout the book and while we didn't get all of the answers we were looking for in the end I still put the book down feeling completely satisfied. There are just enough loose ends to leave my mouth watering for the follow up in the series. I will definitely be looking for more character development and longing for more answers to my lingering questions. I highly recommend Don't Turn Around for anyone looking for a fast paced story chalk full of action.

  1. Sorry to hear this one didn't do it for you :( That's kind of disappointing, because I'm really looking forward to reading it!

Romance is usually a must for me. If there's no romance then the plot has to be absolutely incredible and mouth-watering and un-put-downable.

Don't Turn Around really appeals to me because I'm a huge computer nerd, so I'm curious to see how I like it. :)

  2. It's like you took the words right out of my mouth. I totally agree about the characters not being as developed and being one diminutional. I wanted more back story or at least more pages dedicated to how they were living their everyday life. But I am also happy that the romance wasn't prominent, I mean if it was, it would feel a bit insta-love.

    great review!!

  3. Great review! This was a total adrenaline junkie read! Haha. Im so happy there wasn't any romance either. Although she did put a few hints of it that I found annoying bc they do NOT have any chemistry so I hope she doesn't bring them into a romance in the next book. It was fun to read this one semi-together, too!

  4. I have been seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this one. It sounds good, but it's a shame that the characters aren't better developed. It's nice that there's no real romance in it too. I do love a good fast paced book so I think I would enjoy this. Thanks for the fab review chick!!

  5. Sometimes I just want to read a book that has loads of action and nothing else... I think you just hand me a title that I must save on my to-read list :) Thanks a lot, Jenni!!

  6. I haven't paid much attention to this book, it just doesn't seem the right fit for me. Thanks to your review, I feel even more informed about Don't Turn Around. I'm glad you enjoyed it, despite the small flaws. Great review!

  7. Hmmm, I am both encouraged and discouraged. To read or not to read?

Another book with flat, meh characters! Sigh! Then again, it's occasionally nice to read a book made of action. It can be a nice palate cleanser, like a fluffy contemp or sherbet.

I must be in a mood for romance in my books because I went 'no romance! boo!', but I'm usually grateful for the respite, since YA tends to be a bit romance heavy. And by a bit, I mean it has ALL OF THE ROMANCE.

  8. I second what Christina said: I am both encouraged and discouraged. As you know, character development is EXTREMELY important to me, and it sounds like this is one big thing that this book lacks.

    Poop.

Nonetheless, I think I may still give this a read. I can't remember if I requested this on NG/Edelweiss... ::rushes off to check::

Great review, love! Sorry it wasn't spectacular, but glad you enjoyed it overall :-) <3

  9. I've seen this one all over the place, but never really felt like adding it to my list. I'm not the biggest fan of action/mystery books, so I'd probably give this one a pass.

That sucks about the lack of character development!

  10. Ooh you're right about the fact that there wasn't any romance. I haven't seen that in any YA books in a long time. I read this book called Gravediggers though and it was a zombie book and there was no romance. Although it could be considered a really young young adult. But great review, I'm glad you ended up enjoying it even though the character development lacked :)

  11. Wow, great review for this one, Jenni! Sounds like this one's got some pretty epic action, but I'm sorry to hear that it lacks a bit in the substance. I'm really big on character development too, so I might skip this one. Still, it's really great that it still left you satisfied in the end! Thanks for sharing the review!

  12. I've read some similar reviews of this one. Very action packed but no romance :-( I might still give it a go but I love love my romance and character development. A good mystery is fun though!
