TITLE Some Girls AreAUTHOR Courtney Summers
PUBLICATION January 5th 2010 by St. Martin's Griffin
READ August 19 - 21, 2012

Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first.
Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.
"You're Anna Morrison's right hand. That's the lowest form of life on the highest part of the social ladder. There's not much to you."
Regina, our MC, was not a nice person. Through her memories we see that her past is full of black marks and they are slowly revealed as the story goes on. At the beginning I was certain that there was no way I would have any empathy for her, I was disgusted by what she had done. But something changes throughout the novel, we get to see her fall apart, hit rock bottom, and attempt to pick up the pieces. I truly felt that, in the end, she was remorseful and I actually ended up rooting for her. She finally finds something good in her life in Micheal, whom she had previously ruined. Micheal was a GREAT character, he was sweet and funny in a very dry way. He didn't make things easy on Regina, and rightfully so. But Micheal is not the only person Regina has wronged in her past, there's Liz & Kara, they are all characters with immense layers that I found myself feeling terrible for.
"In high school, you don't get to change. You only get to walk variations of the same lines everyone has already drawn for you."

The summary seems similar to another contemporary novel I read, but Some Girls Are IS written by Courtney Summers. I'll give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
ReplyDeleteI agree with all that you said. The book is uncomfortable but it's also honest. I though it was written very well.
Oh gosh....-flashbacks of gr. 10 White Pine program-
ReplyDeleteI am personally not a fan of Courtney Summers (and it's not just because of the massive amount of swear words she uses in every book.)
But I'm glad you found what you were looking for in this one! I agree, I think it made me feel uncomfortable as well, it was blunt. However, after reading this about one and a half years ago, I don't remember much more about it... O_O
Fantastic review as always, Jenni! <3
Great review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI hated high school and it's funny because it just doesn't matter in the whole scheme of life! Maybe the actual schoolwork, but I really haven't stayed in touch with anyone from high school. And I remember being SO insecure and feeling like I couldn't change.
I can't wait to read this one ... Courtney Summers is a great writer -- and I love finding awesome Canadian writers!
Thanks for sharing!
LOVED this book! It was almost painful to read, but for me that's what made it so amazing. Great review!
ReplyDeleteMy review of Something Strange and Deadly
I haven't heard of this book before but after reading your review I should definitely pick it up! It reminds me a but of Speak which I LOVED so I think this'll be one I enjoy :) Great review!!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds awesome and I already had it on my wishlist from other reviews who absolutely recommended it. It's the type of book you have to be in the right mood to read, though it sounds very intense and raw. I like that things aren't sugar coated and it's true to life jaw dropping. I'm up for that!! :D Plus, I loved TINAT so Courtney is a must read.
ReplyDeleteGreat review Jennipie!
I've never read a Courtney Summers book, but wow this one sounds like I need to change that. I haven't read a gritty book in awhile, and this sounds like the perfect way to change that.
ReplyDeleteI hated high school. For a reason. And I think this book is going to bring that back to me.

I'm happy you liked this, Jenni! While it's gotten great reviews so far, this book was just something I never felt the urge to pick up, but now I'll definitely be on the lookout for it. It seems like a book you have to be in a certain mood for, though, so when I'm in a read for a gritty contemporary I'll definitely have this in mind. Great review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the sound of this: emotionally charged and raw! Count me in. I always wanted to read this one, but forgot about is- Glad you brought it back on my radar!
ReplyDeleteOoh I am so glad you liked it and it managed to feel like sand up your butt ;) I hate books that sugarcoat over things (which is kind of why I've started to hate chick lit) so I'm glad this one was real :) Ooh and I'm really interested about the fact that Regina was really mean and then hit rock bottom. I 've heard of this contemporary called You by somebody where the MC started out horrible and then hit rock bottom and then got worse O_O. It sounds really interesting lol. Awesome review!
ReplyDeleteSold! I'm such a sucker for Contemporary YA, the more angst, the better. I've been hearing a lot of good about Courtney Summers. Looks like Some Girls Are is going on my tbr. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletewow.. this seems like a VERY emotional book!! Definitley something I would enjoy reading! I love how realistic it is, and that makes it much for interesting! It reminds me of "Wintergirls" which i LOVED! Def will add it to my TBR! Lovely review hun!

I think this would be a book that makes me feel uncomfortable. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it though. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI've been nigh desperate to read this ever since I read This Is Not a Test. The dark, issues books totally appeal to me SO MUCH, even though I used to hate them. Funny how that happened.
ReplyDeleteWOW this might not be for me lol I prefer fun. But I have heard this author is amazing and that this is a great book that deals with bullies. Sounds like such a horrible situation all around. Regina sounds mean but it also sounds like Kara shouldn't have said that. But hopefully they all eventually get over it. Yikes. I never want to return to high school. As much as sometimes I wish I could go back I don't think so.
