Q: What is the best mother/child relationship in a book you've read?

Reading within the YA genre, I don't often see very good parent relationships. The parents are usually pretty absent in the books I read. Last week I read Sweet Evil (which I LOVED) and the relationship between Anna and her adoptive mother Patti really stuck out to me. They had this open, honest relationship that really reminded me of the bond my mother and I have, and the bond I hope to have with my children when they grow up. Patti was definitely the parent in the relationship, she hadn't gone down to friend level, but she was Anna's friend. I think there is a fine balance that needs to be achieved to be a friend and confidante for your child but still remain their parent. To me it was the perfect mother daughter relationship.
So what is your pick this week, I can't wait to see. Make sure you leave me a link so I can drop by!

I haven't read this one yet, but I love that it portrays a strong adoptive mother/daughter relationship. I have kind of an adoptive relationship in my FF this week too. I loved the theme this week.

New follower! I can't wait to read this one! Here's our FF! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThere are always such terrible parent/child relationships in YA sometimes. Or the teen acts like the adult in the relationship - or the parent is like an aunt/uncle or whatnot. I mean think about my fave YAs -- The Hunger Games - Katniss is basically the adult, Harry Potter - they are dead -- Enclave - raised in basically a creche...LOL Happy FF
ReplyDeleteGreat choice this week!! I really want to read this book :)
ReplyDeleteHappy reading and check out my follow Friday!!

ReplyDeleteWow. You just made me NEED to read this novel! :o I think in YA novels it's almost needed for the parents to be crappy. :/

I really want to read this book soon! You are so right about it being difficult to find decent parent-child relationships in YA literature right now. That's what makes books like Sweet Evil refreshing! Great answer!

I think it's unfortunate that so many of the parents in YA are so very absent. Looking forward to reading Sweet Evil! Old follower! My Follow
ReplyDeleteI really want to read Sweet Evil now. That kind of relationship is a rarity in YA these days.

It seems to me an interesting thesis to explore is WHY there aren't very many good parent/child relationships in YA books. Perhaps this concept opens the door for a new series? Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
