I am back at my vlogging with The Book Buzzers! This week our topic was chosen by Tiffany of Escaping... One Book @ A Time and she wanted to talk about endings. So here I talk about why I am over happily ever after's and what I like to happen at the end of a book to keep me talking about it! Watch on!
So what kind of endings do you like in your books? Do you have any recommendations of books with shocking endings? I'm always looking for some that will blow my mind!
Thanks for watching!
HA! After your video you know how it shows other similar videos? One was of a super old creepy lady! O_O
ReplyDeleteOk so Flawed has a shocking ending that bad? I'm off to order it after this! lol. And YES Shadowlands I never expected and you will so love Empty!
YOU RUINED FIGHT CLUB FOR ME!!
*sobs*
Holy smoke! I hope you're okay now, though :O :( *hugs*
ReplyDeleteI like to be surprised as well. I love HEA's, because it like gives me hope bla bla bla that everything will be great in the end no matte what, BUT as you, I know that HEA's don't happen every single time, so maybe these shocking not HEA's, no matter how much they hurt or leave me unsatisfied, they are a rarity and should be done more often since they're more realistic and unexpected. Still, I love my HEA's.
What I don't like is when a book ends with a not clear ending, well.. okay, there are some exeptions like The Sea of Tranquility for example, but I don't like to think what could have happened or what should happend etc, I want to know. Even if it's bad, I just freaking want to know, not wonder. Know. There's a huge difference and yeah, I'm the type that wants to know everything. LOL.
So great to have this meme back, it always makes me think about my preferences and see what other people think about these kind of things.
Hope you have a wonderful day, Jenni!:)
I totally stopped counting numbers after missing a few. Dude! I hope you are okay after your fall. I totally agree with you about mysteries. I love to figure out the why about things, so even if I know who it won't ruin my enjoyment of them. I am so over HEA's too. I love crazy endings!! Like Shutter Island! Dude, that was a crazy ending. Welcome back hon!! Missed your vlogs!!
ReplyDeleteI wondered if this was over with, but apparently not! Woo!
ReplyDeleteYou always ramble. That's the fun of these videos. The rambling and mispronunciations and the way you say "about".
Yes! I agree. I'm sick of how many endings are like POOF EVERYTHING'S WONDERFUL. They usually seem like they don't fit at all. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly is a good example. A super-flawed character is suddenly completely functional and everyone skips off into the sunset.*
I don't know if I love shocking endings or not. I guess I do if they make sense, but sometimes it's shocking because it's so stupid. Haha.
Bahahaha, Fight Club broke you.
Read Drowning Instinct. I will tell you this every week until you do.
*There is no actual skipping.
Flawed killed me! I wanted to put my kindle in the driveway and run over it about 5 times. So tragic! But I know deep down that it really needed to end that way (kind of) and the author was brave.
ReplyDeleteI just don't like awful cliffhangers, like not knowing if someone died. That angers me.
Great vlog!
The ending of Flawed is kinda brutal but I liked the book :)
ReplyDeleteBut overall, I just love happily ever after ending. I do see your point but I guess I like the more uplifting energy of HEA?
Loved your vlog!
I'm like you, kind of over the happy ever afters in books. Like Abbi Glines books for example, everyone raves about them but you know they all walk away happy because that's how it is.
ReplyDeleteMy Disjointed Life by Martin Reed was a great book with an unexpected ending.
I'm definitely a fan of when endings completely surprise me, but unfortunately, when I know there's a huge twist, I'm able to deduce little clues and discover the twist long before it's revealed. :( And I'm also beginning to like cliffhangers, but only if they're handled well and don't feel gimmicky to me. They're actually kinda fun. *shrugs*
ReplyDelete(Side-note: I just realized I shrug a LOT on your blog.)
Yikes! Total wipe out. I'm glad you're well minus the headaches. :) Flawed totally has a great ending. Great mention! Although it pains me to think about it *sniffles* the ending was definitely bittersweet and perfect. Bad came, but so did good. I'm totally over the happily-ever-afters. I prefer authors to take risks, ya know kill off a person or two. Haha. What I look for and enjoy the most, are the stories that keep things realistic by showing life's cruelties as well as wonders.
ReplyDeleteOUCH! Slow dooooooown ....
ReplyDeleteI hope your headache goes away! Glad to hear you're not hurt!
Aww ... I do like a good happy ending, but it is nice to read ones that aren't so happy -- I think BOTH can be real if they're done well.
I really need to read Shadowlands! I love it when I don't see the ending coming -- those are always great!
Glad to hear you're okay!!
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly I only saw about half your video because I have not seen/read Fight Club yet and I still want to. :)
But even before I watched it I was thinking about Lucid! For me, it wasn't necessarily the ending itself but the way the ending made me think about the book in its entirety and its characterization. It was all so brilliant!
So looking forward to reading Shadowlands too.
Ouch! Hope you're okay!
ReplyDeleteYES I do the same thing as you do by jumping to the Fight Club conclusion!! And actually, I can name one book that I read where the answer to the mystery was exactly like Fight Club - I believe that was the fastest I have ever guessed the answer to a mystery before... suffice it to say, I wasn't too impressed with the book.
It depends on the book for me - sometimes I really like a happy ending and sometimes an expected ending is great if the whole book was just as great. But I also like shocking endings, or endings with a huge twist - although sometimes the twists are too far fetched and they ruin the whole believability factor. The worst are shocking endings that leave you feeling pissed off! The one that comes to mind is Handle With Care by Jodi Piccoult. I'm still mad about that ending!
