Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived… and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that the infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter the witness protection with her father and sister, Darcy, leaving their friends and family without so much as a goodbye.I didn't really know what to expect going into Shadowlands; I had never read any of Kate Brian's work and I'm not exactly one for reading blurbs. I was sufficiently blown away as a I dove in and got a much more intense read than I could have ever expected. Rory is shocked and scared when, on her way home from school through the forest, she is attacked by one of the most beloved teachers from her school. Thankfully she escapes and finds her way home but upon reporting the incident she finds out that it wasn't just her math teacher who attacked her, it was a calculated serial killer who has managed to evade the police for years. Before she knows it, she is packing her bags and being sent to a remote island as part of the FBI's witness protection program.
Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children, but now they can barely stand each other. As the sisters settle in to Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems like their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. But just as they’re starting to feel safe again, one of their new friends goes missing. Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?
Shadowlands has a bit of everything going for it, there is some great characters, a whole lot of mystery and just a touch of romance sprinkled in for good measure. I read this one in a single day because i just couldn't put it down. Once Rory, her sister and their father get to the island, Juniper Landing, there is so much weirdness surrounding the locals that I had to keep going to find out exactly what was going on. And what a pleasant surprise that when all was revealed I was completely thrown for a loop as it was a twist I had never even considered in all of my sleuthing with this one.
Rory was a great character; she was so strong and smart that I came to admire her throughout the novel. Not only did she show her strength and determination when she escaped and evaded Steven Nell, but she also showed her smarts in how she was constantly questioning life on Juniper Landing. I wasn't a big fan of her sister, but I think that was how it was supposed to be. Rory and Darcy were polar opposites, while Rory was book smart and pretty reclusive, Darcy was the centre of every party and a social butterfly. I appreciated how each of their voices felt unique and completely authentic.
Not only do we get the story from Rory's point of view but we are also treated to short chapters here and there that are from Nell's perspective and are they ever haunting! This lends to an uneasy feeling as it's always in the back of the readers head that he is never far away from Rory. The suspense was maintained so strongly though out the novel and felt like it never really let up, which was great. I loved Brian's storytelling and her cryptic chapters from the mind of a serial killer. The twist at the end has definitely left me pining for more and I can't wait to see where this series goes.
Wow... I saw this book pop up a few times but never really paid any attention to it. I didn't even read the blurb you included, haha. Didn't really expect it to be a mystery kind of book though! Great review, Jenni! :)
ReplyDeleteYes I loved this one so much! I was completely thrown at the end too. I figured it out EXACTLY when she did--so 3-4 pages until the end? lol This so never happens! I also loved getting Nell's POV they were great to keep the ever heightening intensity right at the forefront of your mind. I'm so happy we agreed on this one! This is also rare! :P
ReplyDeleteOh man, you loved this one too!
ReplyDeleteA strong, smart heroine and a cast of well-developed characters? I am SO there.
First Giselle and now you! I'm definitely getting a copy of Shadowlands when it comes out, Jenni. I really love a good mystery and Shadowlands seems the perfect mystery. The characters in the book also sound like a fantastic set. Rory seems to be my kind of MC. I love that the book has chapters in the serial killers POV. I'm sure it made the book so much more creepier.
ReplyDeleteYou got me really excited for this book, Jenni! Lovely review! :)
I didn't really know a whole ton about what this one was about either, so it was good to read your summary and review. I love these types of mystery thrillers - especially when they are well done and the surprise twist is totally unexpected! This sounds great - thanks for the informative review, Jenni!

This book sounds interesting. I've been eyeing the cover since it first came out, but I still really don't have a clue what it's about -- I think I would've just dove in like you did. :) I'm happy you liked it! I think I'll be keeping it on my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteAaahh!! I have seen the cover everywhere and people are talking about it, but I didn't really read the synopsis nor any reviews before your post today. And why the hell didn't I do it before? This sounds amazeballs! I need to check it out immediately. This sounds really intense! Oh, and chapters from a creepy serial killer POV put? Paint me intrigued. Thank you for sharing, Jenni!! *goes off to check out the book on goodreads*
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad this isn't one of those books with just a pretty cover. As soon as I am done reading the book I am reading right now, I am starting Shadowlands. The reviews I've seen for it have me excited to start it :)
ReplyDeleteThe cover pulled me in and your great review has me adding to my wishlist!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard too much of this one yet, but because of that gorgeous cover, I added it to my TBR without a second thought. But I'm so glad that you enjoyed it so much, Jenni! It definitely seems like a page-turner and a fantastic mystery- I love how a good plot twist can completely throw you. I love being surprised in a book, and I also love it when I don't expect something that's thrown at us in a book. Which is something I'm thoroughly excited to read about in this book now.
ReplyDeleteFantastic review Jenni! You've gotten me seriously excited for this book, I honestly can't wait to read it now! <3
This sounds so beautiful and haunting - adding!
ReplyDeleteJenni, you are not alone! I'm not much of a blurb reader either, but embarrassingly enough, I thought this book was a paranormal at first. >.< Thanks for letting me know that it's actually a contemp/mystery! The mystery sounds really kind of scary and awesome. I can't wait to meet Rory, she sounds really smart and meticulous! Yay for plot twists, I'm excited to see if I'll be pining for the sequel. Brilliant review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed reading it! It's awesome to know that you felt you must keep reading to find out what really happened. I didn't know Rory was book smart... looks like my must-read list is growing :)
ReplyDeleteOooo, serial killer! Twists! 4 stars! Pretty cover! Looks like this book is the complete package, I can't wait to read it! Nicely reviewed. For some reason I thought it was a paranormal book too, it's a pleasant surprise to find out it's actually a mystery. I feel like we could use more of them in YA>
ReplyDeleteNot only is it a paranormal story, but a mystery too. Um, yes please. Can't wait get my hands on this one. Wonderful review...

Yeah! Twisty and suspenseful is exactly what I hoped this book would be.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
I didn't really consider this one when I first heard about it. The synopsis was so-so; intriguing but not intriguing enough for me to pre-order this one on the spot, which I'm sometimes guilty of doing... Per your review: what I love the most is that Shadowlands seems very well-rounded. A good mystery with twists and turns but also a great collection of characters. That teacher sounds uber-creepy. I both love and hate when we get inside the mind of serial killers *chills*. I'm pretty sure this book will be in my next BBB (book buying batch). Fab review!
