This week our topic was chosen by the amazing Amy of Book Loving Mom and she wanted us to talk about how we deal with reading slumps. My answer is lame, I know this, but I am curious to hear how you guys deal with them so make sure you comment and let's talk!
How do you deal with reading slumps?
Thanks for watching!
I agree with you about the reading slump being when you don't want to read. (How did Giselle know what you were talking about lol she's got mind reading powers!!). When I don't feel like reading I either don't read like you said or I start another book in a different form. If I'm reading a physical book I'll start an ebook in a different genre. If I'm reading bad books then I'll go on goodreads/blogs and read reviews of the books I have on hand and see which one has the highest most raving reviews and read one of those. Great post! And don't worry your Sunday Hair is still pretty.
ReplyDeleteLOL Giselle and I were texting about how I was about to make my video and then she weighed in once I had already started filming. I think the way her and I look at it kind of goes hand in hand. For me I just can't get into anything, which results in everything feeling pretty "meh" Looking for one that will blow you away is a great way to go, I think! Though reading really good reviews of books tends to make me have really high expectations for a book which sometimes proves hard to meet.
DeleteHaha, if your answer is crappy than mine is too. I like to pick up another one as well. Like.. Right now, I'm reading Under the Never Sky and I read about a chapter or two each night after I was so tired of studying all day for my exams. I kind of passed out each day after those few chapters because I was so tired. I'm usually the type of reader that likes to devour a book quicly and not drag it out for weeks. That's probably one of the reasons I don't enjoy the books I read for more than week that much. I'm half way through with UtNS and it's not bad, I quite enjoy it and once I pick it up I'm really into it, but the next day I don't want to pick it up anymore. I don't know what to do, so I read different books during the day and when I'm in bed I pick this up and read as long as I'm so tired I just have to put it away.. It sucks balls.. -.- I wish I could just finish it and write a review, because I like the book, but I don't know why I can't force myself enough to pick it up and just read, for god's sake. It's frustrating. If you have any tips on how I would ummm.. motivate myself enough to start it during the day and finish it once and for all, I'd be glad to hear it. Oooh, and you're reading Sins & Needles. Looking forward to your review. Giselle was raving the hell out of it and I can't wait to see what you think! Happy Monday to yourself, too:)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you! I always find that books I read over a longer span of time are ones that are pretty middle of the road for me. I really want to read Under The Never Sky, so I hope you are just tired and out of it, because I want it to be so good!
DeleteI just keep reaading too. What's really bad is when you keep picking up books that aren't getting you out of that slump!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughtsm, Jenni!
Oh your hair looks gorgeous! :)
ReplyDeleteI can go through slumps each week, too. I tend to spend a few full days reading, and then by the end of the week I don't want to read anymore. I'm a power reader like you! Of course, now hockey is on, so I totally have Saturdays for reading now! It's hard for me when the hubs is home because I want to spend time with him and don't have a lot of time for reading.
To me, a reading slump is not wanting to read ... I mean, I went through the whole month of May last year not wanting to read anything. I think I made it through two books? Sometimes it's hard because there have been time where I don't want to read and nothing looks good.
Speaking of rereading a favourite, I reread Twilight the other day and HATED IT! Ha!
I just try to read when I want and if I don't want to read, I'll try and power through something that I've really been looking forward to. Or, I reorganize my bookshelves, which usually leads to me finding ALL THE UNREAD BOOKS that look super good. Usually that works!
I have been having more slumps lately and it's annoying. I always get out of them, but it's so frustrating. Umm I think a reading slump is both not wanting to read and bad books. I think they kind of go together. I tend to pick up a non review book that I have been really looking forward to and usually that helps to get me back wanting to read. And by the way you are awesome too!! I totally suck at this topic too and didn't know what to say even though I picked the topic haha!! Are we the only Buzzers still making these vlogs?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteReading slump... when I read a book that I totally can't deal with, I stop and do something else e.g. listen to music, take a walk, talk on the phone. If I feel like I'm not in the mood to read but I have books to review with a deadline, I read a picture book, something that always makes me feel happy e.g. Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman, and then usually after reading the picture book, I'll feel okay to tackle the review copies. Sometimes, eating chocolates or snacking would help but then it leads to some non-reading issues ;)
Loved the topic :)
Thanks for sharing and I power read like you and then take a day off (sometimes). I switch genres and so I tend not to get into reading slumps.
ReplyDeleteBahaha I want you to tell me every time you film your vlog so I can virtually butt in and feel included!! To me a slump is both. You don't feel like reading, or everything you read feels bleh. Not that they're bad books, you just don't enjoy reading--like you said, you can't get into any books so you hate them all lol. Anyways. >.<
ReplyDeleteI don't think Ive ever really been in a reading slump, or I don't read when I'm in one either I guess. If I read and I feel like I can't get into it or concentrate, I play WWF instead!
Also, rereading is weird. True story!
Also, WTF are you reading? Etiquette Espionage? O_o Isn't that a historical?
ReplyDeletehaha that was an awesome vlog Jenni & shout out to Giselle for her virtual cameo :) And I agree: a reading slump is either when you don't feel like reading (or procrastinate)or when you just can,t get into wtv you're reading. I don't read on scheduled days though, but I kinda wish I did cause then maybe I would consistently devote more time to reading >.<
ReplyDeleteOh and I'm a HUGE re-reader but only of like EPIC classics...like 10-star books!! :D
Bahahaha, Sunday hair.
ReplyDeleteI like your pained expression upon looking at the topic.
You have a constant cycle of burnout. But it works for you, so go right on ahead.
Reading slump is when you don't feel like reading, usually caused by reading too much of anything, too many boring reads, or a good read that's making everything else disappointing.
