Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

Mila 2.0 is Debra Driza’s bold debut and the first book in a Bourne Identity–style trilogy that combines heart-pounding action with a riveting exploration of what it really means to be human. Fans of I Am Number Four will love Mila for who she is and what she longs to be—and a cliffhanger ending will leave them breathlessly awaiting the sequel.
What fun reading this book was. I admit, when it came time to buckle down and read it I looked at the whopping 480 pages and was worried it would be a dragged out read. That’s pretty long for YA and oftentimes when I tackle a book like this it suffers from a lot of pacing issues that drive me crazy. That wasn’t the case with Mila 2.0 at all, in fact I had so much fun reading this that I ate it up in 3 small sittings and could have easily read more. A fast pace is set right at the beginning of the novel and it doesn’t let up hardly all the way through. This seriously felt like a Jason Statham movie, the action just keeps coming!

We meet Mila as she has just moved to a small farm town and is dealing with the loss of her father. It’s pretty clear right off the bat that she didn’t make the best of friends. Kaylee was driving me crazy in the beginning! I was so happy that their friendship didn’t last long and that the story moved quickly away from the high school politics presented. As Mila realizes she isn’t who she thinks she is her whole world changes and from then on it’s a high speed chase that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The people who built Mila want her back and will do anything to get her. As Mila’s “mom” lets her in on all the details of where she came from and how she came to be free I really started to care about the bond these two shared. I liked her mom, I liked her fierceness and her protectiveness of Mila. She was an incredibly smart woman who stood up for what she believed in no matter the cost. One bond that I didn’t really connect with was that between Mila and Hunter. They meet at school and go on one date and he became someone that Mila thought about often and dreaded leaving. I don’t think there was enough substance to make me fully buy into her need for him but I do hope that gets much more developed in the next book.

I’m actually having a really hard time writing this review because all I want to talk about is how much fun I had reading it. There are so many chase scenes and just being in Mila’s head as she learns who she is and how she functions was awesome. She is also pretty funny, oftentimes her inner dialogue and shock at the things she didn’t know she was capable of achieving were so well placed that I found myself chuckling a lot. On the flip side there is also some very serious moments in the novel and at those times the tension had me almost to the point of holding my breath (though I totally would have known that I was doing it, it wouldn’t have been a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Happy we cleared that up.) Some of what Mila has to endure and dish out is super intense.

Mila 2.0 had a bit of everything going for it; intensity, humour, a great “mother/daughter” relationship, and copious amounts of action. I definitely recommend getting started on this series and I think Driza is definitely a debut author to watch. I can’t wait to continue on with this series!

  1. Great review, Jenni! I loved this one as well. So much fun, and you're right--a quick read even if it was longer than most.

I'm laughing so hard at the "breath I didn't know I was holding" line. That is one of my biggest pet peeves in YA!

  3. I love the mother/daughter relationship which made the ending even harder!!!! the book was great, but I agree with you on the chemistry and connection between Mila an Hunter. I totally didn't get this at all, I hope this will be explored further in the next book!

  4. Eeee, I'm so glad to see you liked this one so much, too! And I think Amy is liking it, too, so yay! Will have to check with her. And I had a tough time writing my review for this one too, because really, how many times can you say something was fun in one review? Really, all I can truly say about my enjoyment in the novel was that I found it to be so much fun. There really isn't much to it.

  5. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed this book, Jenni! I liked it but not as much as you. I thought the first 20% or so of the book was useless and the book would have worked better without it. The whole thing with her best friend and Hunter actually wanted to make me want to stop reading it. I also thought that her relationship with Hunter wasn't realistic enough and I didn't understand their connection either.
I thought the last parts with the chasing was thrilling though! It was so fast-paced and intense.
    Awesome review, Jenni!

  6. I am finally almost done reading this!! I love the action and I am really enjoying it too, but I am having a reading slump so I've been reading it since Saturday. That's a long time to spend on one book. It's so weird because usually a good book helps my reading slump, but it's only keeping my interest for an hour and then I don't want to read anymore. (Yes Blythe, I am enjoying it too!!) Anyways, now I am just babbling. I'm glad you really liked this one. I think it's really well done and there needs to be more awesome android books out there!!

  7. I'm starting this book when I finish The Lost Girl. So glad to be seeing all of these positive reviews of this now. It didn't start off well, and I was all sad. Now I am filled with hope for fun, mindless action, which can be nice!

  8. Ooops, I actually didn't like this one at all, but everyone else did, it seems. :) I agree about the pacing, it was technically perfect. But the story just didn't work for me and there was some things I couldn't make sense of.
Ah, well. I'm glad it was such a fun read for you. Great review.

  9. This sounds like a lot of fun! Though, really, the synopsis had me at "Bourne" ... I love those movies! I also love a book that is full of action and this one sounds just like that!

    Great review, Jenni!

  15. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I've really be looking forward to the release, but the 480 page count has been scaring me. I was worried about pace problems -- and nothing turns me off to a book quicker than pace problems. It's good to know that's not the case with this. I'm going to have to go and get this one soon. Great review!

  16. I'm so glad this was a fun read! I feel like I've been hearing about it for so long, it's good to finally see some reviews for it.

The insta-love aside, this does sound good! And I know what you mean, sometimes it's harder to write a review for a book you rally enjoyed!

  17. Mila does sound fun! For some reason, I get an Alias vibe, which makes me happy b/c I love Alias. But sad b/c I miss it, too.
Glad you liked this. Good pacing in a book they big is so important.

  18. Yay, I'm glad you like this! Popular opinion seems to label this book as action-intensive with a wonderfully "human" protagonist. I love the concept as a whole, so it's great to hear that it panned out well.

  19. I've never been into the Bourne movies personally, but that hasn't deterred me from wanting to read Mila. It's got one of those suspenseful descriptions that makes you want to know what the big secret is. 480 pages is definitely a lot for the first book. I'm super glad that Mila didn't drag! Although there sounds like there's a budding case of insta-love, I'm still planning on picking up Mila as soon as my budget can afford it. Great review :)

  20. I'm reading it right now and it is fun. A ton of fun! It's been taking me a while to get through, but not because it's bad, I just haven't had time! But i intend to finish it tomorrow. Hopefully. Glad you liked it. It's soo exciting!
