They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.

Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.

After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.

Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta.
It took me quite a bit longer than usual to make it through IN THE AFTER. What started off as an intense look at an alien invasion turned into a dystopian tale that really started to wane at the 50% mark. The drive that kept me reading the novel was Amy and some of the connections that she makes along the way.

Amy was about as kick ass as they come. At no point in this novel did she let her guard down. She was incredibly resourceful and intelligent in the most dire of situations. How she took charge of her fate and made sure that she lived in the After was great and also how she took charge once at New Hope as well. Her characterization is definitely the standout in these pages and I think I would have lost interest early on without her personality on every page. The best thing about the story is that even when there is a hint of a romance, Amy does not let it change her at all and it never becomes the focus of the story. Romance is definitely kept to a minimum here (thank you Demitria Lunetta!!) Along with being strong she is also very mothering. Once she takes in Baby and has a cohort in the After we see a side of her that is much softer and I think that is also something that helped her survive for so long, she gave herself a reason to live.

The world is ugly in this book. The creatures that have taken over are nasty and about as creepy as they come. With their green skin and sharp razor teeth that are too big for their mouths the pictures in my head were scary. I was pretty excited straight off the bat because I felt like I was getting the alien invasion story that I had longed for at the end of Rick Yancey’s THE 5TH WAVE but I just wish this one had the strong pacing that came along with it. We did meet a few interesting twists in the story, most of which were pretty easy to see coming but did still add interesting layers to the novel as a whole.

Once all of the reveals were said and done we get a clear picture of what happened in this world which was perfect to leave me satisfied (thank you again, Lunetta!) There were definitely some missed connections along the way that left me not feeling the emotion that was trying to be conveyed. Some of the people lost in the story really didn’t matter to me so I didn’t have my heart in those scenes as much as I would have liked to but I did enjoy the core group of characters that we meet. Leaving off at what some may see as a cliffhanger, but what I see as just moving on to the next chapter, I am excited to see where the series goes in the next installment. I just hope it comes with a little more depth to the secondary characters and is something I can really throw my heart into.

  1. I agree, Amy was definitely a kick-butt mc, but I can't say I loved this book. The first half really had me hooked, but the second half was such a disappointment. Great review!

  2. I actually haven't read too may alien invasion stories (still need to read the 5th Wave), so this one has me curious. If there's a character as strong as Amy sounds, I think some of the other drawbacks will be easier for me to overlook. I can forgive a lot for a fantastic MC:) Thanks for your thoughts on this one Jenni, I'm keeping it in my maybe pile!

  3. Even though you weren't 100% invested in everything here, I'm really glad to see you enjoyed it! Amy sounds like my sort of protagonist. It really does frustrate me when characters change with the introduction of a romance, so I'm glad that's not the case here. I'll have to pick this up sooner rather than later it seems. Lovely review, Jenni!

  4. I've seen a bunch of good reviews for this, so it's actually really good to read a review that's a bit more balanced than weighted to one side or the other. I think that Amy's character sounds amazing, and I might just love the book based on that! Wonderful review, Jenni :)

  5. It's too bad that this wasn't quite as good as you were hoping, but at least it still kept your interest. Amy sounds like an awesome MC. I am going to be reading this one soon! Great review chick!!

  6. Sucks that you didn't love it and you didn't feel that emotionally invested in the story, but it does sound promising and wow at that cover!! I like that the world was different and creepy. LOL sounds like something Giselle would enjoy, but I'd love to check this one out myself too. I'll keep an eye on this one. Again, amazing review!

  7. I really like the sound of Amy and I think I'd consider reading this just for her! Recent 'dystopian' releases have left me feeling mostly 'meh' though so I might just hold off until I'm craving an alien book with some dystopian elements to it hehe I'm sorry the pacing felt a bit off and that you didn't connect with some of the characters as much as you'd liked but I'm happy you were able to enjoy this one anyway! Thanks for another brilliant review.

  8. Another alien invasion story, huh? I don't know if I'm in a mood for it. I probably shouldn't be so dismissive, but I can't help it, I'M MEAN!
Honestly, though, the grin skin and big sharp teeth sound awesome. That's a great reason to read this, even if the second half wasn't what you'd hoped for. And now I'm curious about intelligent Amy and all the connections she makes along the way.
    Great review, Jenni!

  11. It definitely seems like this author has a ton of potential, so I'm hoping that the next book goes even better for you, Jenni! I'm loving the sound of this main character- I love kick-butt heroines to pieces (I'm such a feminist, hehe ;)). The fact that she also has a softer side makes me think she's really well developed, which is also another exciting fact. Even though there was a bit of lack of depth in this one, I think I'll have to give this one a shot.

    Fantastic review, Jenni! <3

  12. I honestly don't know if I'd want to read a novel with an ugly world with scary, nasty creatures in the summer. It seems like the story is entertaining but it didn't give you the level of excitement that you'd hope to get from this type of novels. Thanks for giving us your honest thoughts!

  13. I have been super curious about this one, I have heard a lot about it on Tea Time with Epic Reads but, I don't know if it sounds like a book for me I am on the fence but, I am considering checking it out. Thanks for your thoughts!

  15. Amy sounds like an interesting character. Though, I'm sorry to hear it turns into more of a dystopian than an alien invasion story. Dystopians ... I'm burnt out. I'm all for the apocalypse though. For a kickass heroine, I'll have to give this a true. Great review :)

  16. I am very interested to read this book because I've been following Demetria Lunetta's blog since she first got her contract for this series, which was several years ago. We actually had the same agent for a little while! From her blog, I know this book was reassigned editors (the editor who purchased it left Harper Collins) and that Demetria had to do a lot of changing things and even cutting out major characters, plus the release was pushed back a year. I wonder if that contributes to the disjointed feeling you talked about in your review? I've seen some other reviews feel the same as well... It's frustrating because I would have liked to see what the author originally envisioned. Sorry to blab, I just know that can be a really frustrating experience for authors when their work is bought by one editor and then transferred to another. There are so many times when books feel disjointed and I wonder if it's because of editorial intrusion that wasn't integrated well.

  17. I havent read many alien invasion books, and nothing in a very long time. I think its definitely time to read another one.
Plus, going into this one, Ill know that the second half isnt as good, so maybe i wont be as disappointed.

    Thanks

  21. I've never actually read any Alien Invasion stories, just the ones where the alien boy/girl falls in love with a human. I like that the aliens in The After are detailed and visual. They remind me of the aliens from the TV series V which were pretty darn creepy. Great review, Jenni.

  22. I liked the first half of this one a lot more than the second half, although it was nice and twisty. This was one of the few dystopian/PA books I haven't been too disappointed in this year.
