“Take her out back and finish her off.”
She doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know where she is, or why. All she knows when she comes to in a ransacked cabin is that there are two men arguing over whether or not to kill her.
And that she must run.
In her riveting style, April Henry crafts a nail-biting thriller involving murder, identity theft, and biological warfare. Follow Cady and Ty (her accidental savior turned companion), as they race against the clock to stay alive.
We catch up with Cady right in the thick of things. She wakes up beaten and bruised on the floor of a cabin and has absolutely no recollection of who she was and how she got there. She also has no idea who the two men are standing above her saying to kill her because she knows nothing. Straight away my interest was piqued, I wanted to know who these men were and why they had tortured Cady for information. What worked very well for this one was how linear the plot was. There wasn’t much romance or friendship drama to bog it down though she does make one connection along the way. When she meets Ty I liked him immediately. You could tell that he had such a kind nature but it quickly comes to light that he hasn’t had the easiest life. While that was all fine and good I did find that the extent to which he was willing to put his life on the line was a little unbelievable. I get that he likes to help out his fellow man and pay it forward but he got himself into some serious legal issues for a girl that he just randomly met at McDonalds.
With very short chapters our attention never has the chance to stray with this one. Something is constantly happening and the tension is top notch. We don’t get a lot of layers to our bad guys as everything is revealed which is something that I would have liked a bit more of. I always appreciate when I get to see multiple sides of the bad guy and maybe even come to understand their motive. Here we get very little information about them and a head honcho who is incredibly typical. I think for what this story was, it worked. It kept the novel short and if you sit back and take it at face value too many details may have began to bog the story down a bit.
There isn’t too much to say about this one because of how short and linear the plot is but I can say this: The Girl Who Was Supposed To Die turned out to be a godd, fun way to spend a few hours on a rainy Sunday morning. If you’re looking for a quick mystery to get you out of a paranormal rut then this one could be for you.

I really want to read this one. I liked the last book I read by her... can't remember the name of it. Something about disappearing or something maybe. The Night She Disappeared? Anyways, I liked that one so I think I would like this. Great review hon!!
ReplyDeleteI think I have an ARC of this somewhere ... it does look really interesting! I like a good mystery, but I think the YA ones appeal to me more than the adult ones because they're so quick.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
This one looks and sounds so cool! I think I'll pick it up at some point. I like that it sounds like it's simple, but also very plot driven!
ReplyDeleteSame feelings on this one though I rated it a bit higher. I read her other book last year and I didn't really like that one and this one was such an improvement so maybe that's where the higher rating comes from.
ReplyDeleteI am seeing this book everywhere during the last two days. Nothing really stands out to me in the novel but the suspense does seem alluring!
ReplyDeleteFantastic review, chick! <33
Short chapters and fast read. I need this, since I'm behind. Haha. Will be starting this one as soon as I finish Charm & Strange, which so far (one chapter) is big on the strange.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking forward to this one, Jenni because I enjoyed April Henry's first book. It was a fast paced mystery too, which I love! Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteI really like the sound of this book, but it does feel like some parts of the book is rushed because of the short length. Also, it's good to know that there isn't much of a romance in this one because that would definitely be out of place.
ReplyDeleteIt's really too bad about the villains not really having any layers.
Lovely review, Jenni!
I agree completely Jenni! We hit the ground running with this one and were never given a chance to stop and catch our breath. Loved it:) It was quick and intense just like you said, and while it certainly wasn't mind-blowing or one that will stay with me forever and ever, I so enjoyed reading it. Lovely review!
ReplyDeleteI got this book for review too, but I think it expired before I could get to it. Intense and good mysteries are always up my alley, so I'll keep this in mind if I ever need a good mystery that doesn't involve paranormal. Because I swear, everything nowadays involves paranormal stuff. It's getting a bit old. Glad this one was good overall, if a bit short. Nice review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what this one was when I saw you were reading it. I hadn't heard much about it before but it sounds like a quick intense read. Is it like a novella or just a short book? Sounds right up my alley anyways. And glad to hear it doesn't go unto the paranormal side like so many could-have-been-awesome mysteries do (the murmurings for instance)
ReplyDeleteIts nice, and rare, to find such short books that dont disappoint. I'm glad the story gave you a nice and intense experience. Great review!
ReplyDeleteExcited to see that this one is a short and quick read! I think I'd enjoy reading something plot-driven. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame the bad guys weren't more three dimensional, I really hate that. Still, this sounds like a quick, entertaining mystery. I'm thinking this would be perfect for a beach read for my upcoming vacation. Fast moving mysteries are my favorite kinds of books to read in between swimming. :-) Lovely review Jenni!
ReplyDeleteIt really does sounds like an intense read, and I like that it doesn't take long to read. Might have to seen if I can get this one from the library. Great review.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for mystery books, and for this one to be a fast short read is always a bonus! This sounds up my alley, great review!

I like the idea of an intense, quick read. Hearing the plot is really linear is sort of a turn off, but if it's quick and interesting, I'm sure it's worth it. I'll have to check out this one from the library.
ReplyDeleteI like books that are quick and keep your attention. This cover always made me want to read it. It looks intense. You've got me interested now. Might have to bump this one up on the tbr pile lol.
