Zom-B is a radical new series about a zombie apocalypse, told in the first person by one of its victims. The series combines classic Shan action with a fiendishly twisting plot and hard-hitting and thought-provoking moral questions dealing with racism, abuse of power and more. This is challenging material, which will captivate existing Shan fans and bring in many new ones. As Darren says, "It's a big, sprawling, vicious tale...a grisly piece of escapism, and a barbed look at the world in which we live. Each book in the series is short, fast-paced and bloody. A high body-count is guaranteed!"
Opening with a scene labelled as “Then” we start out as an 11 year old boy named Brian who wakes up in the middle of the night to find that zombies have taken over his small Ireland town. Once that short scene is over we move into “Now” and we are B who is living in London with an abusive father and submissive mother. B is struggling growing up under the fathers hold. See, not only is he abusive but he is incredibly racist and expects the same to come from his child. We get to see B’s inner turmoil and the struggle that comes along with worrying about growing up just like the father. I was quite surprised to see just how heavily the novel delved into these issues. B’s turmoil really comes to a head on a trip to a war museum where the whole class gets to see a very real picture of the racism that took place in World War II. The viciousness of the racism in the novel could definitely be seen as cruel, unnecessary and shocking to some readers but I have to say that I enjoyed watching B struggle with identity.
There aren’t many characters to come to like in the novel, but I think here that is OK. I still found myself rooting for B once the shit hit the fan, which admittedly doesn’t happen for quite some time. The beginning of the novel is spent watching B run around town with his group of thugs and misbehaving at school. I think this was a good call because I felt like we came to know the relationships and characters really well before they started fighting for their lives. This also led to drawing out a more shocked feeling as to the twists and turns that come later in the novel. For the last 30 pages of the novel I was actually slack jawed by all the twists that came to light.
I think this is a solid beginning to a series that I am really going to like. Shan did such a great job of setting the scene and getting me sucked into B’s life. I really wish there was more that I could say about this one but so much could be seen as spoilers, I even had a really tough time writing what I have because it had to be worded very carefully. At a mere 217 pages this novel packs a unique punch and deals with much more than the blurb lets on. If you are looking for a zombie novel with substance, I think this is a great place to start.

Oooh! Darren Shan! I had no idea he had a YA title out. I used to read some his books when I was younger. It sounds like you had a lot of fun with this book and it actually sounds like something I might enjoy but you mentioned the word, "cliffhanger"! So, nopes, not reading this anytime soon! I probably will when all of the books in the series is out, which hopefully isn't like 15 000 or something!
ReplyDeleteFabulous review, Jenni!
Woah... That's like some intense world built there. The characters seem alright to me but poor characters could make me get a little distant with this novel.
ReplyDeleteStill sounds amazeballs though! Lovely review, chick! <33
I am actually kicking myself as I had the chance to review this book last year, but I really thought that it wouldn't be my sort of read. I love the sound of how deep Shan actually goes into in dealing with issues such as racism. So glad that you enjoyed this Jenni and again such a wonderful review!
ReplyDeleteI tried to listen to the audio of this and I couldn't do it. Maybe I would like the actual book better. I really liked the idea of it, and it seemed really creepy (The airplane dream!!), but I just had issues with the narrator. I think this is a book I would enjoy, just not on audio. Fabulous review babe!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is really not the book for me Jenni! I fear zombies, so the blood and guts you mention is definitely enough to have me saying a definitive no to this book no matter how much your review makes me think I should read it:) Is the second book at least out already so you don't have to freak out about the cliffhanger for very long?
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds amazing. It's nothing like I thought it would be from your review though, which sounds like it's a good thing here. Wonderful review as always!
ReplyDeleteThis is completely different to what I thought it would be, so I'm glad I read your review! I like that there's some depth to the story that goes beyond the basic zombie plot. I actually used to be quite a big fan of Shan's older books when I was younger, but I seem to have forgotten all about him over the years. I'll definitely need to give this a try when I can. Lovely review, Jenni.
ReplyDeleteEven though I like when a book jumps into action right away, sometimes it benefits that you get to know the characters before and you don't need novellas to do that *rolls eyes* Novellas are so not my thing. Most of them at least. Anyhow, I think it's like two of the best worlds combined for you--an issue cake and a zombie cherry on top of that LOL :D I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope the second book is out already or will be out very soon and you don't have to wait long to know what happens next:)
ReplyDeleteI have been a bit weary of this series because I wasn't a fan of Shan's Demonata series. I did love his Cirque Du Freak books though, great review!
ReplyDelete-Scott Reads It!
I'm wary about the fact that this only 25% zombie and guts, because hey, that's the kind of stuff I love! ;) Honestly, though, it seems like the issues talked about in this book- especially with racism, which is discussed that often, honestly- are very important. I love seeing characters go through some inner turmoil to try and figure themselves out, because after all, I do believe that is the essence of YA books. The plot twists also seem superb.
ReplyDeleteLovely review, Jenni! I will definitely have to pick this one up soon. <3

In a world full of text messaging, tweets and IMs - I'm shocked I haven't seen the Zom-B abbreviation before now :-)
ReplyDeleteTold from the perspective of the victims? Oooh wow. I'm not a huge zombie person, so I think that the 75% that's more issue-focused would actually appeal to me more (sort of like Zone One by Colson Whitehead)... plus, what you described about the racism-- that's not usually discussed, and I find that in itself to be a nice hook that makes me want to move this higher up in the TBR. Twists and a zombie novel with substance? Maybe this is what I've been looking for... :)
ReplyDeleteI thought this would be freakish and grotesque but thanks to your review, I now know the series explores so much more than blood, gore and guts. I'm glad you had a great time reading this :)
ReplyDeleteZombies have never been my favourite topic, although sometimes there's nothing better than an exciting, action-packed adventure novel, particularly if it has a touch of horror in it. I was admittedly a little surprised by your review, as I would never have expected serious issues like abuse and racism to be tackled within a zombie-themed noel! That's certainly an interesting and unexpected choice on the part of the author!
ReplyDeleteHmm now I'm kind of curious about this cliffy but... dunno. This book REALLY annoyed me in the first 40 pages so I think me and it just aren't mean to be or something lol. Or maybe it was my mood. It's such a short book I could just skip to the end and probably not miss much haha. I do like that we get to know the characters before the zombies come. Sounds like it's at least very character oriented which is what I look for in these kinds of books. Hmm. maybe. It's on you if I lose braincells reading this.
ReplyDeleteShan's Cirque Du Freak is high on my list of TBRs, and I'm really glad you gave me the inside scoop about this book, too. Thanks! :-)
ReplyDeleteHaha, that cliffhanger was horrible! I was so mad I nearly threw the book across the room. I definitely liked this book, it wasn't what I expected. You're right it was a strange blend of contemporary issues and zombie, but it worked. I really liked B, even though that was quite difficult at times. Glad you enjoyed this!
ReplyDeleteI thought this book sounded slightly familiar, but when you got to the jerk dad it hit me. I remember reviews of this when it released. That cliffhanger sounds brutal, but I'm glad you liked Zom-B!
ReplyDeleteNasty cliffies strike again! I like how realistic-sounding the relationship between B and his parents/father is. Being the lover of zombie books I am, I'll probably check this out. Thanks for putting this on my radar!
ReplyDeleteThis book has been on my to-read shelf for forever! I'm excited that you enjoyed it so much! I also like that you mentioned that the crazy stuff doesn't happen until the last 25%, because I think I would have been severely disappointed by expectations, haha. This was a fantastic review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI. Love. Zombies. I love zombie books soooo much, and this sounds like a great zombie book. I like them with substance and not just brainless fleshing eating creatures, like This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers. But ... I hate cliffhangers. I think I might wait for the second book to come out before reading this one, that way I can jump right to the second. It made reading the Ashes series easier. If the second wasn't out when I first picked up Ashes, then I might've died. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteI like how it mentioned that is was from a victim's POV.
ReplyDeleteLOVELY review!
So much blood and guts. Blergh. I could not have handled this if it were a movie.
ReplyDeleteAlso, this is one of the hardest books to review ever. Looking forward to reviews of the next ones, since I was on the fence about continuing. It was fun, but do I need more? This is the question.
