Book Buzzers (5)

It's the start of another week for the Book Buzzers! This week our topic was picked by Amy and she picked: 5 sequels to series you love that you bought that you haven't read yet.  Once again I didn't have anything fitting this subject so I changed it up a bit so I'd have something to ramble about. First, here's a refresher of the schedule for everyone:
Monday: Jenni (Yours truly!)
Tuesday: Emily from Doodle's Book Blog
Wednesday: Evie from Evie Bookish
Thursday: Justin from Justin's Book Blog
Friday: Tiffany from Escaping One Book At A Time
Saturday: Jessirae from Words, Pages, And Books
Sunday: Amy from Book Loving Mom

Here is me rambling:
Here are my screenshots to defend my case:

The iOS app screenshot is on the left and the web is on the right. See how on the web the series info is immediately following the title but on the app that information isn't there so at first glance it looks like a standalone! (Yes, I realise that the first sentence states it is a sequel but I didn't read the blurb since I had already read what was on the jacket (and it didn't say that) so figured there was no point.)

So what about you? Do you ever buy sequels (knowingly or by accident) and then have to go and get the previous books in the series? Have you every run into this problem with the Goodreads app? Let me know!

  1. JENNNNIIIIII!!!!!! Holy... I don't even have the words right now lol :D:D How have you managed not to read VA series? If you enjoy sarcastic, strong, competitive individuals as heroines and you enjoy a good laugh from swoon-worthy, downright sexy, witty males (since there are about at least 4 of them in this series), then get on 'em, girl!! These books are to die for! The dialogue just cracks you up like no other and it's extremely fast-paced, action-packed and compelling. Even my Mom, who is almost 40 and only reads adult romance and crime books, loves this series. As far as recommending goes, everyone whom I've recommended this series have absolutely loved it and read it multiple times (which I know you don't do, but it just shows that VA series is worth reading). If you didn't live in Canada, which is practically half across the world from Estonia, I'd lend you these books myself. They're uh-mazing!!!

Oh and I love this feature on your blog! As far as buying sequels goes, I more often than not buy the first book, it's only been a couple of times when I've bought the seond or even the third book in the series first.

And the GR app - let's just say that there is definitely room for improvement and the only thought I can console myself with is that technology isn't perfect.

    Have a great week, Jenni!

    Siiri :)

  2. Ha ha ... of COURSE you wouldn't really fit into the category this week. I have a TON of sequels that I'm really looking forward to, but haven't read!

Anyway, buying cheap books can be tough. I've done that a few times where I've bought the book only to realize that there's a FIRST book in the series.

I loved the VA books! I actually am really looking forward to reading the spin off series soon .... it has one of my FAVOURITE characters in it!

And I know I said you could have my Gregg Olson hardcover, but I might change my mind ... the cover for the next book is so pretty, I might just have to get it! *sorry*

I don't even have advice for how to NOT buy the sequels all the time ... usually it says on the cover, doesn't it? Or have a picture on the back?

  3. Dude I love your hair! You pass your hand in it and it's like, all kick ass and messy rock chick! Stop touching it!

I love to suggest you filming your failures!! :D But I can't say much because I requested Betrayal from EW and only saw it was a sequel after I was excited that I got approved for it O_O I haven't read it bc the reviews for the first were so terrible from all my friends. So I'll wait to see what you think. Since I still owe them a review. No wonder I don't get approved for shit on there now! haha

YOU KNOW WHAT ANNOYS ME? When you see a book in the stores, IT'S NEVER ON THE JACKET! They should put that shit on the jacket! I KNOW a book is part a a series something and I'm looking for the first, and I can't fucking tell which one is the first! It annoys me EVERY time!

You have to read the Uglies, chick! I Loved that series!! That series actually only changed covers after it was all done. When I bought mine it was a box set and the new covers were not out yet and this was just a few months before I started my blog.

The forest of Hands and Teeth I'm concerned you won'T like it. I loved it, but so may people didn't and you hate everything I like so yeah :P

  4. Haha!! You totally do that all the time with buying sequels and having to go buy the first book. I'm glad you were able to make this topic fit you. :)

I just did that recently for a blog tour. I joined the tour and I didn't read the email well to see that the book was a sequel. (It's on the blog today actually) I didn't have time to read the first book lol!!

I also agree with Giselle. I hate when I am looking for a book and don't know what book is the first in a series. Like some books just have a 1, 2, 3 or whatever on the spine or say it on the book, but some don't and it's annoying!!

  5. Hahaha, you never have the topic of the week. You're such a weirdo.

I have random sequels I bought at Goodwill and such. SO MANY. I feel your pain!

I CAN argue with those prices. I like books to be cheaper. :-p

Nice screenshots. That's true. It's so weird that it doesn't tell you on the app!

Being forced to get If I Stay is a good thing. You did that with Uglies too. Now you mention it! I am prescient!

I agree! Stop changing series covers! I didn't know until now that your covers HAD to match. I'm glad I don't mind too much.

  6. I totally hear you and you're definitely not alone! I had books that I bought, borrowed or received that were the second or third book of a series and I ended up running around searching for the first book. Last year, I got Dreamland by Alyson Noël and I ended up having to find Radiance and Shimmer. I seldom use the Goodreads iOS app but when I first joined Net Galley, I made requests for books that I thought were standalone only to find out that they were the sequels of something that I haven't read :p

I'm so glad that you find matching covers for your Uglies series :)

  7. Oh, I KNOW - The Goodreads app is just no good. I find it lacking in many ways. Whenever I am interested in looking up a book's release date, for example, the Goodreads app only gives you the year, which uh, is not helpful in the slightest really so that's dumb. Maybe Goodreads has a feedback form somewhere...

It is pretty frustrating that not all books make the series order apparent on the cover... The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if they do that on purpose to try to fool us into buying the sequel and then needing to buy the first book, as well. I wouldn't put it past them. And changing covers midway through a series has got to be my #1 pet peeve!! Why can't they just complete the series as they intended and THEN release them again with the new cover?! It's just another way for them to make more money from us. Though I usually refuse on principle to rebuy the previous books in the series again. The worst may be the Across the Universe series. I adore the series, but it KILLS ME that they're releasing the third and final book with some new fug cover that won't match my original pretty ones. UGH!

Alright, I'm getting a bit worked up now so I will end this comment here!! A very entertaining vlog, Jenni!
