Thirteen-year-old Lacey wakes to a beautiful summer morning excited to begin her new job at the library, just as her mother is supposed to start work at the grocery store. Lacey hopes that her mother's ghosts have finally been laid to rest; after all, she seems so much better these days, and they really do need the money. But as the hours tick by and memories come flooding back, a day full of hope spins terrifyingly out of control...

Now this award-winning YA author brings us an equally gripping story of a girl who loves her mother, but must face the truth of what life with that mother means for both of them.
This was one of those rare cases where I actually read the blurb for a book. I had loved The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams so I was looking into more of her work and reading up about them. I can now say that even having read the blurb for Miles From Ordinary I still had no idea this story would go where it did. There are so many elements to this story. In the first half we meet Lacey, a fourteen year old girl, who is struggling to take care of her mother whose mind is slowly deteriorating. At about the halfway point this novel takes an almost paranormal turn and shifts into something quite frightening.

I'm beginning to feel as if I need to write my own YA novel because in so many books lately I have been able to tie in aspects from my own life and really connect with the characters. I've grown up with an amazing mother who has been suffering with Multiple Sclerosis for years upon years. Now this disease has a physical aspect which isn't like the novel, but at a point it starts eating away at your brain as well. I have watched my mother go through this change, and have helped out in any way that I can. Through that I can say that I felt Lacey's inner struggle as she tried to care for her mom the best she can. It's hard when the person you love the most in the world is suffering and you just want to do anything you can to make any single moment that much better for them. It was sad to see how much Lacey had to grow and mature at such a young age, the situation she was in was heartbreaking, to put it mildly.

There isn't much romance to be had here, which was something that I was expecting to get more of within the pages. Rather there is an intense paranormal element to it that created a very creepy vibe and I actually found myself frightened at parts. I'm not sure how much if it was truly paranormal or possibly more of Lacey's slow dissent into madness as well, I guess that could be interpreted differently by every reader. It was definitely a welcome addition to the story and it brought out a mix of emotions that I have never had evoked from me before.

I have come to thoroughly enjoy William's writing. Through her concise and to the point style there is not a lot of baggage throughout the story and nothing feels as if it is dragging or not cohesive in the tale. Just like The Chosen One we are treated to flashbacks that serve to intensify the story and once again it was pulled off so well. In a mere 195 pages I have been successfully pulled in and I enjoyed every minute of the ride this novel threw me on.

  1. I haven't really read the synopsis so far, but I think what put me off was the age of the protagonist. I prefer the heroines to be older YA.
It is great when you can relate to a book so much, even thought it might hurt and be every emotional I always like it when I can relate so much and I know I end up being all emotional, but .. that's always a good thing in my case...

  3. Great review, Jenni. I'm so happy to hear that Carol's done it again, and the fact that you actually read the blurb means a lot! The subject matter is so out of my league and it sound so scary, but that just makes me want to read it more! I LOVE books that give me a little spark of fear - it keeps me awake, and I can't wait to read this book! Lovely review, doll!

  4. great review. Sounds a bit intense. The book is new to me and a must add. I have not read The Chosen One either and it's on my TBR list. The book blurb doesn't give too much away and I would have never expected a paranormal aspect. I think it may go to the top of my list.

  6. Oh my, this surely sounds emotional and frightening!! I can understand how hard and heartbreaking it is for a young teenager to try to do whatever she can to take care of herself as well as her mother. Thanks for sharing how much you could feel for the inner struggle that Lacey had to go through.

  7. Sounds scary and fun. I've been wanting to read The Chosen One for a long time now. Think I'll look into her again, thanks :)

  8. This one sounds creepy and sad. It would be enough for Lacey to have to deal with helping her mom, but adding in (possibly) paranormal elements just makes it that much better. I love stores where you don't know if what's happening is real or the character is just going crazy.

  9. I may be a little leery about a book without romance (the horror!), but I do love a good creepy read. I still haven't tried out the Carol Lynch Williams book I got from the library, but hopefully soon! Your gushing about her writing makes me want to read all her books!

  10. Oooh, this looks like a depressing book! Bring it on!

WHOA. Paranormal turn? I did NOT see that coming. Agh. I sort of hate when that happens. CHOOSE A SIDE. Or maybe it's just that I've read quite a few recently that would have been awesome as realistic fiction that were suddenly like MONSTERS.

Creepy and not much romance sounds awesome! SO many romances have been awful lately. I could use a break. Also, short. I may need to collect a list of awesome short reads so I can power through my challenge in December. I will remember this.

    Glad you chose wisely, friend!

  12. Oh yes, you should SO write a YA novel!! For better or worse, it's always nice when you can relate your life experience to a character's in a book. You know you have a good author in your hands when they can manage that. I'm intrigued by this sort of paranormal aspect of the book - never would have expected that!

  13. I'm a fan of Carol Lynch Williams too - The Chosen One was fantastic. Honestly, based on the synopsis I don't know if I would have picked this one up, but you've gone a long way towards convincing me - I love me some spooky!
    Great review :)

  15. I haven't heard of Carol Lynch Williams before *scurries to Goodreads to checkout her profile*. I stick mostly to the paranormal/fantasy YAs but lately I've really been into the contemporary scene. This book sounds great, very emotional and deep. Fabulous review!

  16. I always like feeling connected to books. The creepy elements alone have me absolutely fascinated by this book, though. Not that I like being creeped out, but few books have truly scared me (except for The Road). I'm off to add it to my Goodreads list.
