Forgive Me, Leonard Peacockby Matthew Quick
to be published August 2013 by Little, Brown and Company

Today is Leonard Peacock's birthday. It is also the day he hides a gun in his backpack. Because today is the day he will kill his former best friend, and then himself, with his grandfather's P-38 pistol. This cover caught my eye immediately and actually gave me chills. I love how the title is scrunched into the hand, I just think it is perfect. I also love books about school shootings and think this one sounds like it will be full of tension and make me have all of the feelings! I also found out while looking into it that the author wrote the The Silver Linings Playbook which is what the upcoming movie Silver Linings (starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence) is based on! The movie looks awesome!
But first he must say good-bye to the four people who matter most to him: his Humphrey Bogart-obsessed next-door neighbor, Walt; his classmate, Baback, a violin virtuoso; Lauren, the Christian homeschooler he has a crush on; and Herr Silverman, who teaches the high school's class on the Holocaust. Speaking to each in turn, Leonard slowly reveals his secrets as the hours tick by and the moment of truth approaches.
In this riveting look at a day in the life of a disturbed teenage boy, acclaimed author Matthew Quick unflinchingly examines the impossible choices that must be made—and the light in us all that never goes out.
What are YOU waiting on this week?

I love books like this, too! I'll have to keep this one on my radar. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeletethis is new to me, and i am now curious..awesome pick! My WoW
ReplyDeleteWow, chilling. I love that cover, too - it definitely makes an impact! Another great book about a school shooting is The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen - which somehow managed to not be a totally depressing book despite the subject matter.
ReplyDeleteOh this is a great pick Jenni, I don't think I've ever read a book about a school shooting before, but the premise and cover for this sure has me intrigued! :)
ReplyDeleteOoohh this sounds really emotional and intense! Very curious to know what happened with his former best friend. Hopefully his friends will talk him out of it.
ReplyDeleteMy WOW

Oh cool. This sounds very interesting! School shootings are a very morbid subset of fiction to love. Also, I want to know why he's going to kill his former bff. WHAT HAPPENED?
ReplyDeleteThis was in the Hachette catalog right? This could be really good! I Love school shooting books but sometimes they don't quite make it. I think you should really read Nineteen Minutes!
ReplyDeleteGreat pick, love! Because of you, this made it on my MUST READ NOW! List a few days ago :-) It sounds really, really good!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great pick! I loved Quick 's book, Boy51, and Little Brown outs out the best books. Thanks for sharing, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteThis one sounds like I will be bawling by the end. Great pick Jenni.
ReplyDeleteI'm just starting to get into contemporaries, but have yet to read one as intense as this. The premise for this one hooks you right in. I really want to know what happens in that one day. Great WoW pick! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
ReplyDeleteSO dude!! I tried to comment on this earlier from my phone because my PC was being touchy and apparently it didn't go through. Anyways, this sounds really intense and great. I haven't read any books about school shootings, but I do like serious issue books and stuff like this. Great pick!!
ReplyDeleteThe cover kinda gives out a vibe of wretchedness. Not sure if I'll be reading this but I'll definitely keep an eye out for your review. Thanks for sharing, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing concept!!! Stealing Giselle's words, if it's pulled off right, it could be an award winning, amazing book!!! And a very hard read for me since I'm often escaping reality every chance I get. With a little one in school, this would scare the knickers off me!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pick!!! Enjoy the movie if you see it - Bradley is soooo hot *swoon*
Well this sounds interesting. Nice pick!

Oh this sounds good - Giselle mentioned Nineteen Minutes and I quite liked that one too, but We Need To Talk About Kevin is the only other school-shooting related book I've read.
ReplyDeleteI like the cover too! Great pick :-D
This one sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteHope you get to read it soon!

Wow, this sounds super intense as well as chilling. I'm even intrigued about it and it's definitely a far cry from what I usually read haha! Thanks for spotlighting this Jenni, I'll be looking out for your review once you manage to get a hold of it :)
ReplyDeleteOoh this one sounds good! I love simple covers like these...
ReplyDeleteHmm, I think I might read this one. I haven't read many (come to the of it, I don't think I've read ANY) books dealing with school shootings, but this one sounds really good. I'll have to wait until some reviews come in, though, because I have a feeling school shooting novels and ones where the shooter explains his motives may be a hit or miss with me, considering there's probably a lot of melodrama and high school drama involved.
