Torn between two realities.
A choice that will mean life or death.
But she won’t know anything… until she wakes up.
College sophomore, Lila Spencer lived Friday night twice. She doesn’t know how or why, just that she did. As if she split in half and went in two different directions.
Out clubbing with her friends, Heather and Nilah, the girls rock it out and party hard. What begins as an innocent night will lead to a deadly fight for their lives, and Lila might be their only chance for survival.
In bed with her boyfriend, Jay, Lila is safe and warm as she drifts to sleep in the arms of the man she loves. Until she is sucked into a horrifying nightmare of her friends' deaths.
As the sunlight warms her face on Saturday morning, the two scenarios collide. But there can be only one outcome. Will she wake up in her warm bed with Jay by her side, devastated and grieving for her friends? Or was she there to save them?
The answer is just the beginning.
Lila lives this particular Friday night twice. In one scenario she goes out clubbing with her friends and ends up getting abducted by a group of college guys who want to use them as play things. In the other she stays home with her boyfriend and has to deal with the things from the first scenario happening to her two best friends who still decided to go. I had expected that Lila would wake up and see how the night could play out and have to make the decision of what she was going to do and attempt to change the outcomes either way but instead I got more of a vigilante justice story as she heads off and attempts to cut everything off before it happens. This is where I had to stretch my imagination a bit and for the most part I could but there were numerous instances where I was definitely rolling my eyes. The most interesting was when she was on a stake out and had gone what could have been maybe 24-36 hours without eating and proceeds to hop into a garbage can and go through the bags until she finds some ok looking Chinese and then eats it. That was pretty darn far fetched to me, no matter the situation.
As for the characters I have to say that, for the most part, I liked Lila. She was incredibly head strong and determined (and she also proved to be pretty resourceful I guess: See above.) Her inner dialogue did grate on me a bit. She was constantly thinking about how her friends needed to stay in the dorm and her intense love for cuddling with her boyfriend Jay and it did detach me from the story and jar me out of scenes quite a bit. I also came to really like Jay. In the beginning I was annoyed at how perfect he was, he seemed to be the perfect looking, perfect acting guy but as the story wore on we saw that he did make some bad decisions and have his share of flaws. The relationship between Lila and her two friends Nilah and Heather was what really stood out to me. I loved how these girls had grown up together and felt that we really got a sense of how close they were, everyone needs some sisters to put before their misters.
While this wasn’t a perfect novel I was sucked into the story and had a good time watching everything unfold. I enjoyed some of the characterizations but did struggle going along with some of the plot points. I think the story could have been much stronger had Lila went about the evening one way or the other and tried to stop stuff while it was happening but taking it at face value it was still a good ride.
Megan's Website | Twitter | GoodreadsAt twelve, Megan decided to write a novel. A month later, she quit. A reading junkie by nature, she started writing again in her twenties as a way to get the voices out, because who wouldn't want to create a Real Living Person out of thin air? Megan also plays the piano and sings. She teaches little kids and takes pictures of pretty butterflies. She eats way too much chocolate, is sort of a mad scientist with her blender, and spends an unhealthy amount of time LOLing on Facebook and Twitter. She lives in Ohio with her husband and very smiley son. Bitter Angel is her first published novel.

I'm used to some logic holes and too much inner contemplation in YA, but it would be nice if the NAs came in at a higher maturity and sophistication level. This one sounds like it has a fascinating premise, though. Thanks very much for the review! :-)
ReplyDeleteGiselle mentioned the same thing yesterday in her review that it started off very good, but then from one point rolled a bit downhill for her. The thing is that people can go 3 max days without water, but without food one can survive 3 weeks. So 36 hrs is not such a big deal in my eyes. You don't have to sort through garbage for that. At least you liked the MC and the love interest. I'm still intrigued by the plot and the gorgeous cover and I'm eager to read it myself. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard a great deal about this one, so it's good to get your thoughts. Although it wasn't a perfect read for you (I doubt it would be for me either - some of the farfetched aspects of the story would probably irritate me), I'm glad that you were still sucked into the story. Great review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading this one soon. It sounds good, but it seems like the same things that bothered you about it might bother me. I can't stand annoying inner dialogue. The book I'm reading right now the character is like that and it's driving me nuts! Great review hon!
ReplyDeleteI was really excited to read this, but I am beginning to question whether or not I would really enjoy this. The premise sounded like it is some real potential though. I'll have to think about this one. Great review, I'm glad you still enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDude, wtf. It would take WAY more than 36 hours without food for me to be desperate enough to dumpster dive for noms. Like fuuuuuuck no.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading and reviewing, Jenni! :)
ReplyDeleteI hate when a night out clubbing does that to you, LOL :-)
ReplyDeleteYou and Giselle pretty much felt the same way about this one. I like the sound of Bitter Angel - especially how Lila is a strong MC (though the part about constantly needing to cuddle with her bf annoys me), but noooo. I'm going to have to be more than starved to eat something out of a freaking dumpster. Ew. Glad you enjoyed this overall. Great review!
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I'm hearing about Bitter Angel. The concept intrigues me, especially because it kind of resembles Pivot Point. But since it was so-so for you I definitely won't rush to read it.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the premise I also thought that Bitter Angel sounded like a great novel of two realities clashing together. There seems to be a lot of books like this around lately. However I am straight away able to tell that Bitter Angel wouldn't be my sort of read either. Lila sounds like a great MC, but the way things go down, it really doesn't like my cup of tea, but thanks for the lovely review Jenni! :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like one of those stories that has a great premise but when you're doing dual realities, it's really tough to write that and make it crystal clear to the reader. It's a cool idea and I'm going to definitely try to win a copy to see what I think *crosses fingers*
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your awesome review :) and the super giveaway!
There seems to be quite a few parallel stories out there lately. This sounds like a scary situation in one of her possible routes that could actually happen. Glad to see you enjoyed this overall in spite of some of your issues, Jenni. Great review. :)
ReplyDeleteThe blurb didn't really grab me, but the concept is interesting. Though, I don't think I like the sound of too much inter dialogue that jars you out of the story. There are a few alt-reality/parallel stories coming out right now. It's weird how so many similar concepts come out at the same time. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that you managed to like Bitter Angel, despite the issues that didn't work for you. It does seem like an interesting story.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
This sounds like one of those alternate universe books- I've heard about way too many of them lately and may have to pass on this one, especically with the not-too-loving reviews. I saw Eileen's, Giselle's and now yours and so far. I'm not a big fan of Lila for some reason, so yeah... a possible no for me.
ReplyDeleteFantastic review as always, Jenni! <33
I like that cover--it's very eye-catching! It sounds like this one could be a fun way to pass an evening, I like quick contemporary reads sometimes, sandwiched between more serious dystopian or post-apocalyptic ones. It's good to hear you enjoyed the book overall, too!

It seems like an interesting story and I am intrigued. Enjoyed your review and glad you liked it despite things that bothered you
