Love, tragedy, and mystery converge in this compelling novel from “an author to watch” (Booklist).
Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.
Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.
Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.
Parker Frost is an overachiever, she is at the top of her class and doing anything she can to get a full ride to Stanford to chase her dreams. We meet her as she is in the final weeks of her senior year and helping out as TA to english teacher Mr. Kinney. One of Kinney’s most successful assignments in his role of teacher is when he hands his outgoing seniors a journal and asks them to fill it with the answer to this question: “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Pretty loaded question, right? I love the idea of this assignment so much and how it weaved a bit of mystery into the story. See, Parker finds among the stack the journal of Julianna Farnetti. Julianna went missing on the night of her graduation 10 years ago with her boyfriend Shane Cruz. They were the small towns golden couple and their bodies had never been found. As Parker takes Julianna’s journal and reads her innermost thoughts she begins to see that this romance wasn’t everything that it seemed and unravels some shocking truths.
What always makes a contemporary for me is the characters and this one had a cast of great ones. I really liked seeing Parker change as she did throughout the story. We met her when she was on a strict and disciplined path to get into Stanford and we watch her begin to stray in order to find out who she is. All the while her best friend Kat is there pushing her to do something wild & crazy in her final days of high school. Kat was so awesome! I loved her free spirit and her loudmouth ways. She always had Parker’s best interest in mind and was quick to support her in any way that she could. There were so many little things she did throughout the novel that made her into a best friend that I would love to have in my own life. Even Parker’s mother was incredibly supportive of her (even if she went a little overboard) so it was refreshing to see a present parent in the story as well. Not only do we get to see great friendships and parenting but we also get two sweet love stories.
There is so much romance in these pages! We get to see what Julianna had went through 10 years ago which is romantic, beautiful and sad all at the same time and we also get to watch Parker’s crush slowly grow. I liked her love interest, Trevor. He was really funny and because they had known each other for so many years they were able to poke at each other. It was cute because they were incredibly sarcastic with one another and were always forcing the other to read between the lines. Trevor really went out of his way to put himself into Parker’s life and he became someone that was incredibly supportive of her as well.
As you can see there are so many great relationships in GOLDEN and also a page turning, slow burning mystery. All of these elements came together perfectly and I was enraptured by the story until I reached the very last page. I had told myself at about halfway through that I was going to make myself read a chapter an hour to drag it out because I didn’t want it to end but that didn’t happen. I read this in a single day and wouldn’t change a thing about it. If you don’t have this one on your TBR you need to put it there because this is a beautiful story you don’t want to miss.

I love your review so hard, Jenni! I'm excited to get to this myself this weekend. I know I'll love it just from your description and I've already heard great things about Jessi Kirby's lovely writing. I love the sound of two romances in one book and they both sound really well done.
ReplyDeleteFabulous review, Jenni! :)
You too, Jenni? *sigh* My life is so hard. It's impossible to avoid contemporary with you girls teaming up against me and this has been getting some pretty fabulous reviews.
ReplyDeleteCharacters are everything to me in any genre, but especially in conteporary where they really are in the spotlight, and Parker sounds SO very interesting. You know I won't be able to resist.
Great review!
This sounds so amazing!! I need this book. The characters sound fantastic, and this just overall seems like a total me book! Love your review chick!!
ReplyDelete*throws yet another temper tantrum at lack of this book in my life*
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think I will join you in being a contemporary fangirl. I need to get more of those for review. Paranormal and dystopian have been seriously harshing my reading buzz. Though the contemporary I'm reading now isn't doing much for me actually, but it's more of a political issues book. Like, it's interesting for doing something unique, but I'm not super into it.
Obviously, I only read your first paragraph because I do hope to read this sometime soon. *coughs* Sadie Hawkins *coughs* *hacks* What was up with that coughing? I don't even know. *drinks some water* *thinks about lunch*
Okay, peace out, buddy.
I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't read reviews right before I read a book for myself, so I have to admit I didn't read your review since I will be reading this one very soon. But the 5 stars says it all!! I'm so happy you loved it, and I'm sure I will love it too. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful review. It seems everybody loves this book.
ReplyDeleteDammit Jenni! Why must you write such a stunning review? I don't need any more books on my TBR shelf, but I can't NOT read this one after what you just said. I love the sound of the romance with Trevor (sarcasm for the win!), and I thoroughly enjoy a good mystery. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteSARCASM FOR THE WIN! Haha. I'll tell you a funny fact - Estonians love sarcastic jokes, but if one is done on them, things get a little um.. intense haha. Anyhow, I have no problem with it. I love sarcasm and dig the jokes in everyday life as well as literature and movies. I also adore character growth and I really like to read journals in books. They're so intimate and if done right, it can give a lot to the story. Brilliant review!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI saw this cover featured in the latest Goodreads newsletter to hit my inbox and was instantly intrigued. And if it made you declare your contemporary romance fandom - then I'm all for it :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I can't wait to read this one! I was so happy to get an ARC in the mail ... it's just so pretty. And I love that it's a standalone. There are too many series books these days.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
I think that I need to read this one! It sounds like it's really something special! I liked that you liked the relationships in this one! I'm sick of unrealistic relationships, so it's nice to know that realish ones are still out there.
ReplyDeleteI used to avoid contemporaries - like the plague - but then I started reading great contemp after great contemp. Like you, I've been struggling with the supernatural/dystopians. A lot of them exceed at the creep or mystifying factor but get zero marks in the character development part. I've had my eye on Golden for a while *already on my tbr*. Fab review! When it comes to books I totally trust your opinion so I'm sure I'll adore Golden too!
ReplyDeleteI loved your review, Jenni! Do you know you've also converted me to become a contemporary fangirl? Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteContemporary fangirls are the best! The other genres have been boring me as well :( I saw Golden the other day on GR and have been rather eager to read it! I'm glad it likved up to it's cover and synopsis! ^.^
ReplyDeleteLovely review as always, Jenni! <3
My Contemporary Soulmate strikes again! I love this review, and will be reading Golden ASAFP.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
Contemporaries have surprised me a lot lately. Before this year, it would've been pretty tricky to convince me to pick one up, now? I haven't really read one yet this year that's disappointed me. This one sounds fabulous. I just love writing that can add poetry into it and the past and present story line seems interesting as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I'm going to have to read this one sometime soon :)
This was such a good book. Glad you enjoyed it too. Wonderful review.

Oh, Jenni, I completely know what you mean... sometimes there's nothing like a good Contemporary. Eeeep! Join the fangirling club!! ;) I agree with what you said about the cast of characters being extremely important. Contemporaries aren't so much about action and the plot, like other genres, which is why I like them, because they're so personal and you really get to know the characters. Jenni, you make the characters sound so good in this book! Parker seems like a really likeable MC, and Kat like the best friend I've never had. ;) This seems exactly like the book I'm looking for right now, I can't wait to get my hands on it. Fabulous review! <3
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm not usually attracted to contemps, I remember being curious about this one! Beyond it's cover the blurb just sort of appealed to me, you know?! Anyway after reading your review, I'll be adding this to my reading list!! It sounds just wonderful, and the premise sounds unique & intriguing :) Loved your review girl, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove your review! I'm so glad you ended up liking this one since it's been on my TBR pile for ages now and can't wait to read it. I think this'll be the perfect summer read :)
ReplyDelete-Kimberly @ Turning the Pages
I really enjoyed Kirby's previous novels so for sure I will be reading this one too. I'm thrilled to know you loved it so much!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I might need to be reading more contemporary too. Like you, I have found most recent dystopias and post-apocalyptic novels mostly disappointing. Not all bad, but not as captivating as I wished!
I'm having the same reaction to fantasy this year, and I don't read a lot of fantasy. It makes me want to scrap everything else for a while. Golden sounds like a beautiful read.
ReplyDelete"Slow burning mystery" is a good way to describe this one. I'm so glad you loved it, Jenni! I've been having a lot of luck with contemporary books lately too, and I'm pretty picky about them. I loved both the romances in this book too, and the writing style is just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I've been MIA, btw--my once-a-week blog reading got offtrack because I was sick for a couple of weeks, but I finally feel like I'm actually not going to die, hah.
Wendy @ The Midnight Garden
This one looks so beautiful. And I love the description. I am going to have to pick this one up!
ReplyDeleteOoh I absolutely love this review! I have read so much praise for Golden over the last week, but this just puts me over the top. I need this book right away—thank goodness I don't have to wait much longer! I already know Jessi can write toe curling romance, so I'm looking forward to getting to know Trevor. Very excited that there's a bit of mystery as well. Wonderful review, Jenni! :-)
ReplyDeleteLovely review! Seriously, if I haven't already had this book on my TBR pile since the first glowing reviews started getting published, your review would ensure that this book made it there. :) It sounds like I can easily relate to Parker and her choices (probably true for the majority of the book-blogging world, but that's always an added perk). I'm glad you were able to enjoy this story so fully, Jenny!
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, I just wanted to say that I hope you find some great speculative fiction reads soon! I'm starting to like contemporaries more myself, but it really is so nice to be completely sucked into a new world through books.
I loved this book to pieces too. One of the best I've read lately.
ReplyDeleteThe characters, the plot, the tiny suspense, it was all so great and it made me think so much about my younger self.
