Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies.In this #1 New York Times bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, author of Slammed and Point of Retreat, Sky meets Dean Holder, a guy with a reputation that rivals her own. Holder has the ability to invoke feelings in Sky she's never had before. In just one encounter he leaves her terrified yet captivated and something about him brings up a rush of memories from the past that she’s worked so hard to bury away.
Sky knows Holder is nothing but trouble and tries to keep him at a distance, but he is adamant about learning everything he can about her. Sky finally caves to his unwavering pursuit, but she soon finds out that Holder isn't the person he's been claiming to be. When the secrets he's been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky's life changes forever.
What I liked: I loved the characterization of Sky and her relationship with her best friend, Six. Sky was very head strong and she didn’t let all of the garbage that the girls at school put her through get her down. I loved how even though she was in a completely new setting she was able to walk away with her head held high and just brush everything off. Her and Six were perfect, they completely understood and supported one another. Sky also had a very good relationship with her adoptive mother, Karen. They were very open with each other and there was a level of trust that you don’t always see. I also adored how all of the little threads that were exposed throughout the story weaved together beautifully in the end. This story is definitely much more than a romance, it’s also a mystery and it turns out to be quite a psychological one. As it all wrapped up I found myself looking back on little details that were presented throughout and realizing just how significant even the littlest of details were.
What I didn’t like: Ok. So, there were only a few scenes where I was completely sold on Holder. The way that he came off in the beginning of the story was always in the back of my mind and you never knew when he would fly off the handle. I don’t think that would have bothered me too much if maybe Sky wasn’t so damn quick to forgive everything because she apparently needed him so badly. Sky was written as a character who wouldn’t put up with such bullshit but the minute that Holder came into her life she was a swooning puddle and it kind of annoyed me. What really annoyed me about this story is much of the dialogue, especially near the end. These people did not talk like real people, they talked like trained psychologists who have spent years getting their pHD’s in physiological trauma. This is what Holder says in the middle of a love scene: “The negative connotation you’ve been associating with physical touch your whole life doesn’t apply to me.” (quoted from uncorrected ARC copy) That’s just not something an 18 year old boy would say in the heat of the moment so it completely took me out of the scene and actually garnered a laugh from me. There are pages and pages where these two talk about their feelings and even do an exercise in embracing who they once were and it just came to be way too much. I think the story could have been much shorter if a lot of the annoying unnecessary meat was cut out and I would have appreciated that a lot more. The wrap up of the story came across to me like a cheesy after school special where everything comes together in it’s own twisted/perfect way and it was just far too over the top for my liking.
I know that if the majority of people on my Goodreads were taking a survey on how much they agree with my assessment of this novel they would check “strongly disagree” so there is definitely something here that people are loving, it just didn’t work for me. I can see how getting wrapped up in the romance can sweep you away and there were definitely a few scenes I found pretty swooney but this story just failed to blow me away. There was some gritty realism to it but the way that the characters responded to these terrible events was a bit too cheesy for me. If you are reading this amongst the sea of 5 star reviews just remember to go into this one with a bit of trepidation and maybe you will come out much more pleased than I did.

This was such a well thought out review! I haven't read this book yet, but I don't know if I will. There is nothing I dislike more than a girl who totally forgets who she is when a guy comes into the picture. I mean I think you bend a little when you're in a relationship, but you don't change who you are and this makes me leery of this book. But I'm glad that you ended up not hating it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen so many praising reviews for Hopeless, so it's nice to get a change of opinion Jenni. I love that quote that you used, and how the characters changed into trained psychologists. I don't think I would have been able to take that scene seriously either. Cheesy, nicely wrapped up endings also bug the heck out of me too lately, sometimes I like things being left open and the chance for me to make my own interpretation. I think that I will still give Hopeless a try, but I won't be in a rush to pick it up. Sorry it didn't work out for you as much as you'd hoped. Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteI bought this like right when it first came out and I can't believe I still haven't read it yet. I feel like a total fail!! I have to get to this one soon. It's too bad that you thought the dialogue was odd,(I just finished a book where the 3 year old talked like an adult would and it bothered me) but I'm glad that you still enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if falling in love made the heroine MORE of a badass, rather than a fainting, melting lump. Why can't she be both? *sighs*
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. I've been really curious about this one Jenni because I've heard such good things about Colleen Hoover and this book in particular. It's really interesting for me to read about some of the things that didn't work for you, and I have to agree with you on that little dialogue snippet - an 18 year old boy likely wouldn't say something like that in the middle of smexy times. Or at all:) Still, I have this one on my list, but I'm glad I read your review before I started so now maybe I won't have set a bar higher than this book can reach!
ReplyDeleteAw, I loved this book. I didn't find anything especially cheesy, but we all have different perceptions. Sorry you didn't love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda sad you didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of us did but still, three stars is okay. Better than 2 stars. Ha. Anyhow, I do agree with that dialogue snippet you pointed out and I think I already commenter on your GR review that you should try Slammed sometime. I'm re-reading the first two right now and yes, Lake can be annoying at times, well.. she is 18 and she's very stubborn, but she grows so much and I just adore, adore, adore Will Cooper. + my eyes are wet already thinking about Point of Retreat. I hope you have better luck with Colleen's other novels:-)
ReplyDeleteAwe, sorry this wasn't a book you loved. There are just some nooks that just because other people love them doesn't meant you will. I have had a few of those. I am glad you enjoyed it some. :D

It's nice to get the perspective of someone who didn't fall head over heels for this book. I definitely had sky high expectations, and am hoping to start my ARC this weekend. From what you describe I think I'll have some issues with this one. I hate when a girl is all tough and self-sufficient and then she melts into a puddle at the first sign of relationship trouble because she needs the guy. Also that quote is pretty laughable! Very interested to see where I land on this one. It does sound like there is quite a lot of merit, but maybe I'll enjoy it more with my now somewhat lowered expectations. Wonderful review Jenni!
ReplyDeleteAwwww, I'm sorry you didn't love this one. I still haven't read it, yet I do have it and plan to read it as soon as I can find the time. I know most other people love it, but everyone's perception is different. Can't love them all, right?! I still plan to give this one a try. Fabulous review!
ReplyDeleteWow, you seem to be having shitty luck this past little bit with your reads eh? I'm sorry this one didn't blow you away but honestly, I'm glad to see a review for it that's not 5-stars, glowing & raving! You know I don't read too many contemps but I'd had my eye on this one...now I think I'll hold off. Boys like Hunter are usually a miss for me anyways o.O Awesome review though ♥
ReplyDeleteSometimes when a book is hyped up as much as this one, it makes your expectations too high. I read Easy the day it was released (as a self pub) and I was blown away by it! It was my first NA. After reading so many NA books, if I were too have read it now I would still really like it but maybe not be blown away by it…
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn’t like this book, looks like it wasn’t your kind of book.
Or maybe you’re just heartless :)
I like that you pointed out the issue that you had with the dialogue. Thanks for giving us your honest thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have the same reaction as you to the book. It's on my TBR list but I haven't gotten to it yet. I tend not to be swooped off my feet in the romance and Holder doesn't sound too great. I may still give this a shot in the feature, if I get a chance. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteI was reluctant to read this one too. I just read it last week and while I didn't "love" it like many others seemed too, I "lived" it.
ReplyDeleteSucks you didn't enjoy it. I don't think this one is for everyone.
Great review!
I've been so reluctant to give this author a try because of all the hype about her books. It's too bad you didn't like this one more than you did but 3 is still a decent rating. Great review!
