Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.
When I try to think about how to describe my reading experience with Reboot, the only thing I can think of it that it was like the most not fun rollercoaster ever. That sounds really negative and like the whole book sucks but that’s not the case. The beginning of the book was like that rollercoaster going up, up, & up. Exciting things were happening; I was introduced to a world that was intense, I met characters that I really liked and the seeds for a sweet romance were planted. However, once a rollercoaster reaches the top of that climb it has to go down and down this one went. The problem is that once it reached that plateau it just continuously went down and never made its way back up again.

We are introduced to Wren who is a Reboot. Reboots are people who have died and in this world where a disease has run rampant they come back to life after a certain amount of time, they are “rebooted.” Wren took the longest in history to reboot, coming back after 178 minutes. The length of time that you are dead weighs heavily on a reboot and it shows in her. She is very mechanical and empty when we meet her. She has been trained by a company called HARC (who owns all reboots upon them waking up) to be a machine. I loved how vicious this little blonde girl was, the detachment that she felt to the things going on around her lent to some hilarious dialogue and really sucked me into the book. When Callum enters her world at HARC he is one of the shortest reboots ever, clocking in at a mere 22 minutes. He had so much humanity left in him, so much life. He was someone that I really liked right away as he forced his way into Wren’s life. I rooted for Callum, he was a really great love interest and was so funny. The best part of their romance was how the growth of it was such a stark contrast to the environment in which it was growing. While they were training for combat we watched these two fall for one another which was pretty fun.

Once the relationship was solidified the book started going downhill for me though. In the second half of this novel it became more of a gooshy romance story and Wren changed far too much which caused me to lose a lot of respect for her. She lost her strength and was so clouded by this love she felt for Callum. I missed who she was in the beginning, I missed her kick ass first & take names later personality, I really wish she kept more of her earlier traits instead of losing who she was in the romance. The only thing that kept me interested despite all the cheesiness of the second half was the effects on the under 60 characters of the testing HARC was doing to them. That was a great element to have added to the story and I was anxious to find out exactly what was going on.

This novel started out as a solid 4 for me but lost a star in the second half because there were so many eyeroll moments. I can’t go too into detail about what happens because that would be spoiler territory but I just wish it was handled better and focussed a lot less on the romance. It is really saddening because two characters that I really liked came together and I thought I would definitely be a fan of the love story but the way the characters changed too much and lost who they were just didn’t work for me. I still found this to be a really fun read despite my issues and will most likely continue on with the series. If you’re looking for a more romance heavy tale with heavy doses of action this one could be for you, just be prepared for a pretty drastic shift at the 50% mark.

  1. I just watched the book trailer for this today and got really excited about it. Now I'm not sure what to think of it :/ At least you enjoyed the first half, I guess.

  2. I'm currently reading this at the moment, and I really like Callum. He's like the shining star in the book.I don't care much for Wren to be honest because she doesn't let people know her emotions too much. I'm still at the 45% mark and now I'm worried about this turn that you talk about. I hope it doesn't disappoint me too much.
I love the roller coaster description. It made perfect sense!
    Lovely review, Jenni!

  4. I am starting this one either today or tomorrow. I hope that I like it. It sounds good, but I don't know about the whole gooshy romance thing. I'm all for romance, but I don't like when it totally takes over a story.

  5. First, high-five for the use of a rollercoaster analogy :) Second, I'm sorry the second half didn't work quite as well for you as it did for me, I just adored this one. I see your point with Wren though, her rough edges did smooth out really quickly when she met Callum, but I was already in love with her by that point so it didn't bother me. It should be interesting to see what she's like away from HARC in the next book!

  6. Ah, yes, this was a wonderful surprise (I didn't really expect much), but the romance ruined it for everybody, it seems. I was just so disappointed by the sudden change in Wren, I much preferred her initial attitude, just like you. Her transformation because of a BOY was almost insulting for kickass heroines out there.
Still, this was a surprisingly good debut and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
    Fantastic review, Jenni!

  7. Well this is disappointing. All the reviews i have read of this book solidify the same idea. That this book is good up until the middle then it goes downhill fast.
    That is so not nice
    Anyway, great review, Jenni

  8. Bahahaha, I love your roller coaster metaphor. I am torn on whether I want to read this. Basically every review I see has me adding the book to my tbr, removing it, adding it again.

  9. Your roller coaster analogy is brilliant! It provided an immediate visual for how you felt about the book.

  10. This one actually sounds really good! I tried to get my hands on an arc, but it never happened. I think I got declined. I do hate when two really cool characters fall in love and get caught up in that so much that they loose sight of who they were by themselves though. It's a bummer that it sounds like that is the direction that this book took, but it sounds exciting none the less! Great review once again!

  11. I really like the sound of this book and I'm thoroughly intrigued by it. I don't appreciate couples in books that aren't independent as individuals though. I'm sad that it didn't work out for you as great as it could have since it really seemd like something you'd enjoy. At least it had potential to be amazeballs at the beginning and I hope the sequel works out better for you:-)

  12. Another one bites the dust! Looks like I might be skipping this one too...
Although this sounds better than Transparent I don't want to read a blah book. I want these books to blow me away!

  13. That's an interesting shift in Wren's personality and behavior. I think I'd like Callum. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Wow, it seems you're on a roll with disappointing books. I hope you enjoy the next one, Jenni!

  15. I've had this one on my "maybe" list. I think it may just stay there. I'm not sure it's my type. Thanks for the review! :)

  16. Lol love the rollercoaster bit! It does make it sound like something I would get bored at if it reaches its peak too soon. I also get so annoyed when it becomes all about the romance, and gooshy romance? That is the worst of all! Bahaha. Gooshy!!

  17. I'm sorry the second half wasn't as good as the first. I really hate it when that happens. It sounds like I'd really love the first half -- a vicious little blonde heroine sounds awesome. But when love magically solves all (which I'm not sure if that happened, but it sorta sounds like it did) and a girl loses her strength over romance ... hm, not my thing. That said, I think I'll still read this one sometime just for the strong first half. The second half can teach me what not to do in the future.

    Great review!

  18. I love romance, but I'm not sure I'd like the complete change in character that you describe, Jenni. I think some change is bound to take place when you fall for someone but not to the point that a person seems completely different. Still, this does sound like a promising start to a series. Great review. :)

  19. I keep seeing the same issue for this book, so you're not alone, Jenni! The problem with Wren changing too much during her romantic relationship seemed to be a common problem among many Reboot readers! I'm glad you had a really good time reading the first half of the novel though. :) Brilliant review and thanks for the honesty, Jenni!

  20. What a let down! I hate when books start off on a high note, quickly peak, and then plummet. Wren sounded kickass - what a shame that a guy pretty much destroyed her coolness. I'll probably still read this one down the road, but I've definitely lowered the bar. If Fox 2000 does decide to make a movie out of this one, I hope they tweak it a bit. Thanks for deets on this one. Great review!

  21. I was SO looking forward to this one- so I'm really sorry you didn't like it. I'll still give it a shot, though....

  22. You have no idea how disappointed I am to read that romance ends up taking priority over everything else in this book! Seriously, I don't think I've ever been so excited by a book blurb and its premise as a whole. It just sounds so incredibly amazing. And I do like the idea of someone with more traces of humanity teaching another to become more human again. Maybe that's not the most inventive plot in the world, but it's a solid one, in my opinion. But helping a person learn to embrace humanity should be about more than simply romance. Oh well. I'll be reading this with lower expectations.

  23. Sorry the second half of the book was a bit of a let down :( I hope I have better luck with it than you did!
