The Passage meets Ender’s Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
What tops my list of things I liked in this novel is the world building. So often I go into a post apocalyptic novel and am left with so many questions as to how the world came to be in the situation that it was. That’s so not the case here. I had a clear picture of the strife brought down on the world and I truly felt the desperation of the people living through it. It’s pretty dark and creepy in that it seems as if it is something that could truly happen. It’s always frightened me to think that there are aliens out there and the thought of them one day coming to Earth is... just I can’t even. Yancey’s aliens (The Others) are super intelligent and have studied the human race for so many years that they are constantly able to be one step ahead. The Others tactics were gruesome and felt completely realistic to me (you know in a far-fetched way... I hope...)
As we got to experience these waves through different people we came to see all sides of the war that was waged with Earth and that was something that I definitely appreciated. My favorite POV had to be Cassie, though I admit that this was much stronger in the beginning than it was in the end. Quickly upon meeting her as she is out on her own trying to figure out what the hell to do I came to like her. She had adapted to this tough world really well and wasn’t afraid to do what she had to do. We see her deal with the worst of the worst and through flashbacks we come to know just how much her character has changed since The Arrival. I do wish that she had maintained some of this strength-on-her-own-against-the-odds personality once she met her love interest because we do start to see that strength waver.
I can’t say that I truly connected to the romance as much as I would have liked but I don’t necessarily think I was supposed to. Throughout the novel there is a level of distrust between Evan and Cassie which is brought upon by The Arrival and how The Others got into the humans heads and left them with no one to trust. So all along I never really felt that I knew Evan’s intentions and never fell for him as much as I could have. He was sweet and helped Cassie so much, but I always felt like there was an ulterior motive there. I also didn’t like how Cassie threw her instincts to the side when in the beginning of the novel she constantly stressed just how important following your instincts in the new world was. But I guess that’s what love does, it clouds your judgment, right?
The story moves at a quick pace and there were definitely no lulls that had me yawning. I needed to find out exactly what was going on and if Cassie would make it to where she was going so that kept me turning the pages. We do get another perspective of a soldier who is recruited to fight in the war in the form of Zombie. I liked him and his determination quite a bit and I wanted to see him survive. The two POV’s are brought together really well even though the strings tying them together are completely convenient but I was able to not let that bother me and just go along for the ride. This is a strong start to a series that I think will be a huge hit, but you already know that from the mass of 5 star reviews on Goodreads, right? I don’t think this is one to be missed and I can’t wait to see where the story heads in the next installment.

I'm going on a road trip tomorrow to places with book stores. I have a feeling that this one might come home with me? I'm so glad you liked it as much as everyone and their mothers have!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad this one worked for you as dystopians and post apocalyptic books haven't been working too well for you lately. I liked The 5th Wave more than you did but to mention the romance, yeah, it seemed a little forced and under developed.
ReplyDeleteWell written review, Jenni!
I want this book so badly, I might have to drive into the city and pick it up. :) The world building sound completely amazing. Awesome review.

I've heard nothing but good things about this series, Jenni. I'm really excited to get to this soon. I hate it when dystopians don't make their background clear to the readers either. It's good to know that you know exactly what's going on. I didn't know there was a romance in this one, but I think if the world building is as awesome as everyone keeps saying it is, I can surely ignore it.
ReplyDeleteFabulous review, Jenni! :)
I need this book!! I also need time to fit it into my reading schedule lol!! This sounds really awesome though, and I don't think I have seen one not positive review for it! Fantastic review hon!
ReplyDeleteThis book just keeps getting raving reviews. It really must be SOMETHING. I'm not up for very discriptive writing, but I want to get my facts straight and the back story has to be there! What? There is a romance? I am one of THOSE readers who needs a little of it in a book. I don't need much, just a tiny bit ;-) Even if it's like a break up, make up, long distance - you name it. I just want a little love in my books. Hehe. I was reluctant to pick this up since I knew it was all about aliens and world-building which would be fun and great for a change, but now that I know it has some romance in it? Whohoo!! Thanks for your lovely thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the world building. He did a great job with that. I just wish the heroine had been as badass, but, as often happens, meet a boy and turn into a puddle of emotion-filled goo. Sigh. If I ever get a boyfriend and do that, I want you to slap me from Canada, okay?
ReplyDeleteI get the love clouds your judgment thing, but if it is clouds, I want to see them lift and things be realized, you know? She was still cloudy even after the non-shocking reveal. Would have been fine if they hadn't had to be all OMG I LOVE YOU. Bleh. *barfs a little*
I don't think I've read a bad review for this book yet Jenni! I'm really excited to give this one a try, but nervous as well because I'll probably be the one person who ends up not liking it. Awesome. World building in post-apocalyptic worlds is so important, I'm really glad to hear the world building here is a highlight! Lovely review as usual:)
ReplyDeleteThis book is supposed to be the next big sensation, right? It's encouraging to read that in the first line of your review you found it to be refreshing. That's saying a lot after all of the dystopian novels we've been hit with in the last few years.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I am jealous. I was a little late discovering this book but I cannot wait to get my hands on it, hopefully when I clear some time. I love the sound of the premise and hopefully this will be my good dystopian fix. I been craving a good one lately. Wonderful review!
ReplyDeleteGah! The good reviews keep coming and reading each one makes me want this one more and more!! I'm especially glad that the world-building was so satisfying here as you mentioned, SO important for my overall investment in a story like this. I've been VERY hesitant with the recent dystopians (this year especially) but I really am eager to get my hands on the Fifth Wave - loved reading your review ♥
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm glad you enjoyed this, Jenni. I agree that the romance was probably the least appealing thing about this book, I don't understand why it didn't take more time to develop, even under extreme circumstances. And do you think there's going to be a triangle in book two? I fear it, I really do!

Too bad the romance didn't work that well, especially considering the excellent worldbuilding. I was glad to read a slightly more critical review since most people just gush incoherrently, which is mostly useless. My copy arrived yesterday but I have no clue when I'll be able to read it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much for post-apocalyptic reads lately, but this one definitely has me curious. I'm in love with stories like this that seem completely realistic.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
Glad to see how much you liked the world building and pacing in this one! I seldom read post apocalyptic novels but I think I may give this a try. Thanks for sharing, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this book! I'm going to be getting it soon and have been hearing really stellar things about it. It's really good to hear that it's a refreshing break from dystopian/post-apocalyptic wave -- because I've been getting a little sick of them lately as well. It seems you're not alone with not connecting with the romance, but I can forgive a sizzle-less romance if the rest of the book is good. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteYay, so glad that you loved The 5th Wave too Jenni. I was a little hesitant in giving it a try, but like with you, the world building and gritty pace certainly won me over. I adored Cassie's voice in this, I did prefer her pov more, but the rest of the narratives worked so well too. I can't wait to see what Yancey has in store for us next! Wonderful review!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I have heard so many wonderful things about this one. I haven't read much dystopian/post-apocalyptic novels yet, so it sounds like this might be a great place to begin. If so many people can find things to love about it, it has to be worth checking out.

So happy you enjoyed this! I agree, the romance was the weakest part of the story for me, not because Yancey tried and failed at it, but because it was meant to be weak and questionable and bothersome. I really enjoyed Cassie's POV in the beginning, but I think Zombie's won me over by the end. I can't wait to see what happens next! Fantastic review!
ReplyDeleteAll I've heard are good things about this novel! I think I'm going to see if my library can order in a copy. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
Man......I am going to have to just read this book. Seriously, this book has been everywhere and I believe about every blog has reviewed it.x
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear that you enjoyed this one so much, Jenni! :D It's been on my to-read list for a while now, and since I was so excited for it I was a little worried, but I'm glad that you liked it! :D I'm definitely gonna have to run out and get myself a copy of this soon!!! :D Awesome review!
