Book Girls Don't Cry - Annoying Characters

It's that time again! This week us Book Girls are talking about annoying characters.  This is another anonymously suggested topic (tell us who you are people!) and one my fellow BG's were excited to talk about.  I actually had trouble with finding some to talk about which really shocked me because normally I am annoyed by, like, everything.  So here is my short take on the topic:

So, who are the most annoying characters you've read about?

Don't forget to stop by the Book Girls Don't Cry page here on the blog and leave us your topic suggestions!

  1. Bhahaha! I hated Wesley, too. Come on, you called "the love of your life" names. Like mean names! He was so annoying. Ugh! I haven't read the other books you mentioned, though. Some of my most hated characters are Anastasia Steele from FSoG. I know you haven't read it, but I'm 110% sure you will loathe her. She is.. Out of this world and not in a good way. I liked Twilight when I first read it and I can honestly tell you that if it weren't for Harry Potter and Twilight, I may not have ended up reading as much as I do right now. However, I have read Twilight Saga 2 times after that and I can tell you that I'll not read them again. Everything about them, every character - I just don't like them at all anymore. Maybe KStew ruined Bella for me, but I just find her character in the books to be nothing but a shell. A shadow of a girl that could have been. Not so many characters come to mind at the moment.. but I remember disliking all of those characters from umm.. that P.C. Cast series. What is it? Night something. No? Anyway, I think these books are badly written and the plot is just hilariously awful. Makes no sense at all and the characters - all of them - are just completely ridiculous. I think it's good that you don't have that many you dislike, because then you can enjoy a book so much more. Maybe you tolerate different characters better than I do, lol.

    1. The House of Night series seems to be one that everyone found annoying! I will definitely be staying away from it. I totally understand what you mean about Bella.

  2. Haha!! I get annoyed so easily with characters!! I haven't read The Duff so I haven't "met" Wesley, but he sounds like a major tool! I am going to be reading Things I Can't Forget really soon. I hope that Kate doesn't annoy me too much. OMG!! I kick you!!! Jenni is awesome!!! *tasers your ass* I still love you though. ;) I won't say here who my characters are because then there would be no reason for anyone to watch my vlgo Sat. if I give it all away here. Great vlog babe!!

  3. Fun topic!

Wes sounds horrible. Does he change or apologize?
Kate is like a lot of my childhood friends. It can't be helped when you grow up like that. So sad, yet so annoying.
Jenny. I've heard a lot about her. I don't think she'd annoy me, but you cracked me up.

I agreed w/Siiri, those characters in House of Night are the worst!

I'm also annoyed by wishy-washy women, like Tru in The Mighty Storm. She wants the guy. He wants her. Then she thinks "No. He's too sexy and women look at him.", then leaves. So then the guy moves on, and she wants him back. Over and over for 400 pages. Gah!!!!

    1. No the worst part was that he didn't even go through a big change in the book he was always just a douchebag and the MC just became more accepting of his douchbaggy ways. Terrible!

House of Night seems to be a popular one, holy crow!

I totally know what you mean about the wishy washy women, for me that was Katy in Onyx and I'm getting over the back and forth in the Violet Eden Chapters by Jussica Shirvington.

    2. I'm still trying to decide if I want to read Dustlands or not.... She doesn't seem to improve much, from what I' hearing...

  5. This is a great topic!
I thought Wes was a giant douchebag too. But at the time that I read it, I was still very immature and I actually liked the book for some reason. Now that you've mentioned him again, I'm remembering his douchiness!
Ughh! He was so mean to that girl by calling her the ugly fat friend! >.<

I thought Kate was really annoying too at first, but like you by the end I felt bad for her. I think it's the way she had been brought up that made her that way. I already wrote my review for that book and I wrote how she really judges people, but I think she's not doing it in a mean girl way.

OMG! Haha! That last character sounds awful! :P
Who thinks about who to get into their vagina when their kids are being eaten! Gross! What a sorry excuse for a mother!

Since, everyone else mentioned House of Night, I'm going to add something to that : STAY AWAY FROM IT JENNI! You will most definitely hate Zoe and her sluttiness! (She gets it on with more than 5 guys in the series!) >.<

Some characters that I hated with a passion were the ones from that dumb book, Of Poseidon! OMG! They drove me nuts! I wanted to punch each and everyone of them. -_- Oh I also hated everyone from the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer for some reason.

I actually could write an entire essay on characters that I hate!

    1. He was such a douche! He called her duffy as if it was a term of endearment and she was just like "ok" UGH!

Yeah Kate was one that I could deal with in the end because I understood why she was the way she was in the end.

Yes Jenni was terrible. I hate the fact that we share our name!

I will definitely be staying away from them, I can't believe how many people are bringing that one up!

I haven't read Of Poseiden and don't plan to because the reviews were just terrible.

  6. For what it's worth, Stevie Rae and Rephaim are the reason to read the House of Night, despite Zoey being the main character. Also, Zoey's boy-crazyness and sexuality were, I am willing to wager, intended to actually counter the slut shaming nature of YA culture. Zoey herself actually starts the series doing this and look where she is now? But I digress, that could get its own blog post and if it keeps bugging me perhaps I'll write it. That's not why I'm here today, though.

Annoying characters... *ponders* I think that I look at this differently since I write as well as read. Characters usually don't "annoy" me per se, because their annoying behaviors are often in place to allow them to go through some form of character arc or growth. If they don't achieve this they can irritate me.

But I think my biggest problem is when a character is either not fully realized (like Bella Swan in Twilight) or when their problematic behavior is either never addressed or (worse!) outright rewarded (Luce from Fallen--stalkers don't become instantly cool if they are female, or Ashton from The Vincent boys--you cheated on your boyfriend and got a "happy ending". Good for you. *sarcasm*. And yes, Beau is just as guilty there, I'm yelling at Ashton since it's suppose to be "her" story but she does nothing to resolve it. Now there's a topic I could go on about for DAYS...)

I always find this an interesting topic because everyone's answers tend to be unique, which ultimately leads to the conclusion that what we like and dislike in fiction has just as much or more to do with us then it does with the characters, whether we love them or hate them.

    1. Hm Good to know that the side characters really step up and steal the story in that one.

You're totally right! Normally they progress and you can see why they were the way they were and appreciate the journey they went on (like Kate in Things I Can't Forget). But I have to say that Wes and Jenni didn't change and that's why those two rubbed me the wrong way.

Yeah The Vincent Boys is another one I should have used. I ended up DNF'ing it because the characters were such terrible people that I knew I would never be able to fall for their twisted romance.

      Thanks for weighing in Kathy!

  7. Ha! I love your rants. :)

I think my most hated characters are probably Mel from Team Human ... or MOST of the characters in the House of Night series.

And yes! Kate drove me nuts through a lot of Things I Can't Forget. I hated that she was so judgemental!

I haven't read that Rhiannon Frater series, so I can't comment, but that was just too funny!

Great vlog, Jenni -- as always. :)

  8. Love your blankie!! haha. Wesley sounds like an arse! Eek. That's the one you hated and Christina loved, right? Wonder what side I'd fall in >.<

Omg Kate I totally forgot about her and I was reading it at the time too haha. SUPER judgmental ugh but I still felt bad for her though she was kind of brainwashed by religion.

    I'm not watching the rest.

    Ha! Vagina.

  10. That last one made me crack up. How can she think of her vajayjay at a time like this? I haven't read any of those characters before. I think the only character I really disliked was Nora from Hush Hush bc she put herself in harm for stupid reasons.

  11. I get annoyed by characters sometimes, but remembering which ones annoyed me sometimes is difficult. :P haha

The most annoying narrator for me was in a non-fiction travel narrative I read called Full Tilt. I kind of felt bad about hating her too because I was all "Does this mean I hate the author too???" haha Oh well...I still can't stand that Dervla Murphy. :S

I LOVED Wesley...but I can understand why you didn't. People react very differently to characters so it makes sense that I can love him and you can completely hate him...I'll concede that he does have major douchey tendencies though. :P haha And I just finished Things I Can't Forget...I liked Kate, but I agree that her being so judgmental did make it difficult to like her at times. I think you're totally right about the religion being a part of that, too. I did like her though and I felt that once she kind of realized she was so judgmental, she tried to change and for the most part she did...except when it came to Matt, but I think that was more her being afraid of her feelings than anything. Okay...stopping this tangent now because it's long.

Now some characters I couldn't stand...hmmm, well I gotta agree with some of the commenters above and say Zoe in HoN too...she definitely got on my nerves. Bonnie in the Vampire Diaries books also got on my nerves sooo much...and I don't really like TV series Bonnie either. :P Mel from Team Human was another one I didn't really like either, but she did get better by the end of the book...HATED her for the first half though. I also read this book Empty by Suzanne Weyn that had three narrators, I liked two of them...but I couldn't stand the other one, Nicole. She was so selfish and her thoughts were so trivial...in an apocalyptic book that just doesn't fly with me. :P And the last one that I can think of is Micheal in RaShelle Workman's Exiled. In that book you get his POV along with the heroine's, and I just didn't like him AT ALL. The heroine thought he was brave and everything, and with seeing his POV, I just didn't get it at all. I thought he was a tool and so arrogant. :P

    Thanks for sharing, Jenni! :)

  12. Interesting topic... thank you for sharing your reasons, Jenni! Out of the three books that you mentioned, I've only read DUFF. Wesley seemed insensitive but he did grow a little throughout the book so I didn't find him extremely annoying. I guess I found Sydney a bit annoying when she first appeared in the Vampire Academy series but strangely, I actually liked her in Bloodlines. I think depending on my mood (and patience), I may tolerate one character in one book but then dislike a character of similar trait in a different story :P

  13. Haha, I love your ranting! I haven't read the first two, but they sounds super annoying.

As for Jenni... I'm pretty sure we had this conversation at some point already. She didn't annoy me. I can totally understand her love of killing zombies, but the rest of it I can see being annoying.

  14. I LOVE it when you go all psycho HAHAHA only cause I get SUPER ranty and crazy about characters I hate or books I just couldn't stand! I've (obviously) never read the books you mentioned lol but I still loved hearing about the annoyingness...thats not ever a word. Anyways, characters that have annoyed me to no end that I can think of at the moment? Hmmm, I couldn't stand Araby from Masque of the Red Death (or honestly any one in that whole book) but Araby made me want to punch her too many times to count. Clary from the Mortal Instruments series was another one I had a hard time with. Not all the time, but man she was really annoying sometimes!

Thanks for another fun vlog & discussion girl, can't wait till the next one :D

  15. LOL "Don't be thinking about your vagina at a time like this" - That has got to be my top favourite thing you have ever said in a vlog (and you've had some pretty amazing one liners so there's tough competition)! I haven't read any of the books you mentioned, but all those characters definitely sound annoying to me. Especially the third - Yikes. Don't really know what to make of that plotline... Anyways, fantastic vlog as always!!

  16. We're no longer on speaking terms!!!! I smite thee!!!!!!

I do believe you missed the ENTIRE point of Jenni's character. Jenni was/is the BEST character ever written in fiction to date! Ugh!!!!!

You're in trouble FOREVER! Now I'm going to reread The First Days today because you made me miss it!

  17. I thought the entire cast of Unspoken was downright annoying.
