Mallory killed her boyfriend, Brian. She can't remember the details of that night but everyone knows it was self-defense, so she isn't charged. But Mallory still feels Brian's presence in her life. Is it all in her head? Or is it something more? In desperate need of a fresh start, Mallory is sent to Monroe, a fancy prep school where no one knows her . . . or anything about her past. But the feeling follows her, as do her secrets. Then, one of her new classmates turns up dead. As suspicion falls on Mallory, she must find a way to remember the details of both deadly nights so she can prove her innocence-to herself and others. In another riveting tale of life and death, Megan Miranda's masterful storytelling brings readers along for a ride to the edge of sanity and back again.Hysteria was a novel that caught my eye the moment I saw the cover reveal. I loved the font treatment, the popping use of the color red and the eerie feel that it conveys so well. Once I started reading the novel I was quick to realize that the eerie feel was going to be a running theme between the cover and the text which was so great. But as the story wore on my failure to connect with the characters on a deep level kept it from reaching amazing status and left it as simply an enjoyable read.
The short, fragmented thoughts Miranda uses to convey emotions is definitely effective. It’s not flowery, it’s simple and to the point which is something that I always find myself appreciating. While the clipped style can be a bit disjointing at first, I always find myself sucked in and a fan of the style once I get going. It’s a bit reminiscent of how I felt from Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz, or Cryer’s Cross by Lisa McMann. There’s a lot of mystery to this novel and we are spoon fed little details slowly, very slowly. We know that Mallory has killed her boyfriend Brian in her house and that it was deemed self defense in her own home but we don’t know exactly what led up to the murder. The way we got little glimpses of what happened that day and the days before was awesome! I really liked when I saw we were getting a flashback and I think Miranda used them very well in this case.
As for the characters, I really wish that I had connected with them a bit more. I was definitely intrigued by Mallory. Her psychosis is up for question here and it had me second guessing everything that happened around her wondering if it was simply her hysteria manifesting itself. But I failed to really feel for her. I felt like we didn’t get to know enough about her outside of what she was experiencing after the murder. I would have liked to have gotten a better glimpse at how the event had changed her so that I could feel how jarring it was for her personality. The one thing we do get to know about her from before the event doesn’t exactly make her out to be a good person, but I would have liked more of that, good decisions or bad. I have to say that my favorite character was her best friend, Colleen. She was incredibly supportive and understanding of what Mallory goes through.
The mystery is what really sucks you into Hysteria. Not only do we slowly unveil what happened to lead Mallory to where her life is today but we also travel with her to a boarding school where the students all seem to have their own agenda and Mallory learns that she can’t ever really escape her past. This was definitely a book that I had a lot of fun reading & that I thought about a lot when I put it down but I would have liked a little more substance to the characters. If you’re looking for a good mystery to pass your time, this could be the one for you!

I'm really looking forward to reading this. I loved Miranda's last book, Fracture, so much. I thought the story was really compelling, and her use of setting was perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame you couldn't connect with the characters. Sometimes that's okay, if the plot is strong enough, but sometimes it can really detract from my enjoyment of the book.
Great review babe!! I really liked Colleen too!! I have to agree that if we had gotten to know how Mallory was before the murder maybe it would have been easier to connect. I did like the flashbacks, and the feel of the story though.
ReplyDeleteEw. You compared it to Cryer's Cross. I need to go cry now. I HATED that book. Fiery passion of hatred.
ReplyDeleteI guess I just won't read this for a while, which was already the case, but now I won't be sad about it.
LOL Am I the ONLY person who liked Cryer's Cross?!?! I thought it was like a campy horror movie!
DeleteYes!
DeleteLOL! Who asked for your two cents?
DeleteI decided to skip this one since I have to cut down some with my new 3-reviews a week thingy. It sounds kinda interesting--especially the mystery part, but no one really loved it. All I saw were 3 stars and below so. I also was not a fan of her other book which is not usually a good sign.
ReplyDeleteI love the detail and thought you put into this review. And I agree -- it's always a huge letdown when a reader can't get to know the characters well. Although there are other important elements in fiction, such as, of course, plot and setting, I believe the characters are the most important. Without well fleshed-out characters, one can't really get into the story -- at least, not completely. Thanks for your honest opinion! I don't think I'll be picking upt this one. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I have heard about this but most of my trusted bloggers disagree and have different rating. Though it is captivating and I love the cover, too
ReplyDeleteGREAT review, Jenni
I am adding it to my TBR

I keep seeing middling reviews for this one and the first, so I am torn between that and my general curiosity, as well as my love of mysteries! So...thanks a lot for adding to my waffling, hah. I guess the question would be: if there was a third, would you read it? Hmmmm.

I read Miranda's debut, Fracture, and I think that lack of character connection was an issue there as well. I do like the premise, though, and from what you've written, it sounds like the mystery/spooky factor is done pretty well.
ReplyDeleteI've heard pretty mixed things about Megan Miranda's book, but this one just sounds SO interesting! I'm definitely curious to read about the murder mystery and the way Miranda delivers the short clips of the scene. I'm sorry you couldn't connect with the main character, but I guess it's different for everyone. I'm still not sure if I'll be picking this book up, but perhaps when I'm in the mood for a quick mystery! Thanks for fantastic review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I've seen a lot of middle ground reviews for this, and also a couple of raving reviews. I'm still not sure. I think I want to read Hysteria, I loved Fracture, but I won't rush.
ReplyDeleteThe mystery sounds interesting although I am not sure if I could connect with Mallory. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteOh, this sounds like it'd be a perfect read for me, actually! Almost like Ten, in that while there wasn't much character development (but I still really liked those characters), it's really the mystery that sucks you in. And you know how much I enjoyed Ten! The mystery itself doesn't sound too riveting, but I'm hoping that there's a big reveal/twist about how she came to kill her boyfriend, and not something stupid like, "You didn't answer my text? PREPARE TO DIE MOTHERFUCKER!" *ahem* So yeah. Awesome review, Jenni! I'll adjust my expectations with this one. Hopefully I'll like it more than you liked it because of those lower expectations!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and *shrugs*
I love the cover of this one. It sounds pretty interesting, although I hate when I can't connect with the characters.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm most interested by the cover of this book -- it's just delighfully mysterious! And I've heard great things about Megan Miranda. I will have to check out her books one of these days. :)
ReplyDeleteI requested this ARC on netgalley and it's one of those cases where I'm kind of glad that I got denied. The synopsis is so-so for me. I think what really drew me in originally was the cover. It's very eye-popping and it makes you want to study it for a few extra seconds. Lack of character connection is a make or break for me so I'll probably stay clear of this one, at least, until it magically falls out of the ceiling into my lap... which I don't see happening anytime soon. Haha!
