The only thing worse than forgetting her past... is remembering it.
When Freedom Airlines flight 121 went down over the Pacific Ocean, no one ever expected to find survivors. Which is why the sixteen-year-old girl discovered floating among the wreckage—alive—is making headlines across the globe.
Even more strange is that her body is miraculously unharmed and she has no memories of boarding the plane. She has no memories of her life before the crash. She has no memories period. No one knows how she survived. No one knows why she wasn’t on the passenger manifest. And no one can explain why her DNA and fingerprints can’t be found in a single database in the world.
Crippled by a world she doesn’t know, plagued by abilities she doesn’t understand, and haunted by a looming threat she can’t remember, Seraphina struggles to piece together her forgotten past and discover who she really is. But with every clue only comes more questions. And she’s running out of time to answer them.
Her only hope is a strangely alluring boy who claims to know her from before the crash. Who claims they were in love. But can she really trust him? And will he be able to protect her from the people who have been making her forget?
From popular young adult author, Jessica Brody comes a mesmerizing and suspenseful new series, set in a world where science knows no boundaries, memories are manipulated, and true love can never be forgotten.
We meet our MC, Violet/Seraphina/Sera, just as she is waking up finding herself in the ocean after what appears to be a plane crash. She is found to be the only survivor of said crash and has come to with no memory at all of who she was or why she was on this plane that there was no record of her being on. She’s released from the hospital and put into foster care because no next of kin has come forth after her photo was spread nationally and from there her past starts to slowly creep forth. I can’t say that I really cared for Sera; she constantly felt very monotone to me and empty. There were no emotions that I could really connect to and even her love and history with Zen fell a bit short for me. She made some really dumb decisions that had me rolling my eyes and her rationalization for them had me wanting to pull my hair out. Here is my favorite line:
“I've been so preoccupied with finding Zen. Saving Zen. Protecting Zen. I didn't even stop to think about my own future.” -Quoted from an ARC
Being that I didn’t feel the connection between Sera and Zen I was bothered at the fact that this girl was literally going to throw her life away for this guy, without a thought, because she isn’t important and he is! With all that was going on in her life and her freaking amnesia after surviving a plane crash I think the girl should have been trying to figure herself out rather than focussing on some guy she doesn't even remember. The one redeeming character that got a few chuckles out of me was Cody, her foster brother. He was hilarious and had no filter from his brain to his mouth, the things that came out of his mouth were pretty comical.
The big twist in the novel did take me by surprise but that whole reveal section felt like a huge info dump and I couldn’t wrap my head around all the details that were thrown at us in that short time. I admit that I did like where the story went and of all the scenarios I had thought up in my head, it was not one of them but I just wish it was handled a bit better, maybe a bit slower. That’s all I’m going to say about that because I am getting dangerously close to spoiler territory here and I don’t want to ruin anything.
While this one started out as an exciting read that captured my interest immediately, it quickly became a very passive read that I was just trying to get through. I like where the story went in the end but the road to get there (and during the reveal) were much too rocky for my taste. Had there been some characters that I could have really liked and gotten emotionally invested in I think I would have cared more about the events that unfolded but as it stands this was a very weak read for me and one that I can’t recommend.

Yes! You summed up my feelings exactly. The beginning was great, very mysterious and weird and I liked Cody a lot. He was basically the only character that made any type of sense. Then the middle hit, and with it the big reveal of what is actually going on, and all momentum just STOPPED. It was so laden down with info-dumping that I just got so freaking bored. I mean, the idea was interesting, and like you said, I didn't really see THAT particular scenario coming, but it could have been handled a bit better. The romance was lacking for me as well, but that's probably because I couldn't connect to Sera very well.
ReplyDeleteMy review will be up shortly and then we can compare!
Most of the reviewers who read this book had a somewhat similar reaction to this book as you did. It's really too bad because it seems to have such an exciting plot line. I would have been disappointed too. The MC doesn't seem to be my kind of MC.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your honest review, Jenni!
I actually need to get back to this one. I read about 12 chapters I think and then put it down. I should get back to it soon since it comes out next week lol!! It just wasn't holding my attention. I am in a wicked reading slump right now. I'm literally reading 5 or 6 books, jumping between them. Lol!!
ReplyDeleteThis one sounded so mysteriously good! I love memory loss and I am glad to hear the reveals are surprising. Too bad the characters were not likable but I'll try to go in with an open mind and give them a chance. I am really curious as to what is going on and why she ended up at the crash sight with no memory and on no records. I'm a bit suspicious of this Zen guy though.
ReplyDeleteNot even funny, because I wrote a comment and blogger just decided to NOT publish it. -.- Wth?? Anyway, this was one of my most anticipated reads of 2013 and these "meh" reviews just keep on coming. I really like the sound of this book, though so I may check this book out on only one condition: a person who I trust to give good recommendations is stunned by this book. In a good way of course. If not, then too bad.. I may just have to pass this one. A lot of depends on the MC and if you can't fully connect with one, then you probably won't end up enjoying a book. Sucks that it was exactly like this for you. Better luck with next book, I hope!
ReplyDeleteLalalalala, not listening. I'm going to pretend I didn't see this. *glares at book pile* Noooooo. Why do I keep believing the pretty covers? *falls into incoherent blubbering mess*
ReplyDeleteBut maybe I'll like it? X_X
Oh great ... this is another one I need to read for review! That sucks that it started out good and then went downhill. :( I'll still give it a try -- who knows? I might like it!
ReplyDeleteUh oh... this on is next in my review pile. I really hope I enjoy it more than you did!
ReplyDeleteOh, I’m so sorry you didn’t care for this too much, Jenni. I’ve been really looking forward to it for a while, after hearing good things about the author and her other novels. But if you can’t connect with the characters, there’s really nothing you can do, and even the coolest plot twist is too easily ruined by info-dumping. What a shame!
ReplyDeleteAw, man. I was really looking forward to Unremembered. I love amnesia stories, and this seemed like a good one. It's hard to become invested when you don't care about the characters.
ReplyDeleteNice review. Jenni!
I'm a little sad that this didn't live up. I am really looking forward to reading this one, not so sure now. I think I will have to wait and see if my library carries it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

Oh no, sorry this one didn't grab you. I was really looking forward to this, but I've seen a couple other people who feel the same way. It's a shame when the characters feel empty and the relationships are meh. Also I hate infodump in a big way. I think I'd have issues with this one for sure. Thanks for your honesty!
ReplyDeleteI agree so much. No connection between Zen and Sera at all whatsoever and their chemistry was non-existent. It was all too instalovey and I had the way that they were so dependent on each other with no outside interests. I still need to write my review for this one and it will be VERY similar to yours. SO disappointed in this one. :(
ReplyDeleteUnremembered sounds totally forgettable. I don't need uber-independent MCs, but it drives me absolutely nuts when girls spend all their time worried about some boy. This girl who is "throwing her life away" reminds me wayyy too much of Bella so - no thank you.
ReplyDeleteI have been so curious about this one but, I am disappointed that the big twist was an info dump because it seems like it would take away from the whole twist. Thanks for your thoughts!

Sounds like Lost. :(
ReplyDeleteYES, the whole thing with Zen was so incredibly flat. It was like 50 First Dates meets Mila 2.0. Just no. I mean, it was an easy read and I was curious, so I gave it a 2.5, but huge hot mess.
ReplyDeleteThe twist did surprise me, but, seriously, WHY THE FUCK DID SHE END UP IN THAT TIME IN THE OCEAN? That is never explained. Why did she go to the wrong time? And even more upsetting, why that location?
