Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.Being the Cover Whore that I am, I was dying to get my hands on Mind Games from the moment that I saw its stunning cover. I actually read the blurb for this one and it got me even more excited. Two sisters with extraordinary powers trapped in a school that wants to use their powers to carry out their evil deeds. How epic does that sound? This story had a stunning cover and a great premise going for it but unfortunately it failed to deliver...until the very last chapter.
Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways… or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.
In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.
Fia and Annie are sisters who at an early age began showing signs of having capabilities that other humans didn’t have. Fia can always feel what is right or wrong with her flawless instincts and Annie had a vision of their parents dying in a terrible car crash which came true later that night. The world that was created in which there is a school that houses all of these people with powers should have been so fascinating but instead fell flat. All we got were teachers who were so twisted that it was hard to believe that Annie could have been falling for their crap all along and thinking she was in this place that was good for her future. And instead of great friendships and a great sisterhood it was just full of people who didn’t really like each other and were constantly at each others throats.
There was not one student in the school that I liked, but we really don’t get to see any other than Annie, Fia and their friend Eden. I didn’t like Eden, and I can’t even really back that up with a strong reason why, we never got to know her in any way other than a few scenes where she was snarky towards Fia. Annie was pretty frustrating because she spent most of her time moping about all the things Fia had to go through to keep her safe. I felt like, as the older sister, she should have had some more wits about her but she really felt like she was so oblivious to absolutely everything. She knew that her sister was being trained and used as a weapon for murder but still she was selfish and wanted to reap the benefits she was receiving at the school. Fia was pretty snarky and in the beginning I was sure that I was going to like her but even she fell flat for me. She was always repeating things three times and tapping her fingers three times & I just never got a feel for what purpose this served in the plot other than annoying me.
Along with the repetitiveness of the story I was also bothered by the pacing. When I read the first chapter I was prepared for a story made of awesome because it was great! There was action and intensity & Fia looked promising with her sass and kicking ass capabilities. But I kept reading and I was extremely bored. There are all of these flashbacks that aren’t really cohesive; one will go back 7 years, then the next 2, then the next 5 and it ended up feeling all over the place to the point that I wasn’t sure if I was reading something that was happening in the now, or just how far back in the past it occurred. So in the middle I wanted to sleep and then the last chapter was like BAM awesome again. So it was like a sandwich with this really amazing bread filled with something you would never ever want to eat. Yeah, it was just like that.
Mind Games was my first White novel and there’s a pretty good chance it will be my last. The twist at the end was enough for my to bump my star rating up one but I don’t think it was enough to make me actually pick up the sequel. Such a shame too with such a pretty cover...

You posted editorial mind games which gives users bunch of information concerning meticulous subject recognition for this allocate.

Damnit this one sounded so cool. I'm bummed. I get so frustrated when a cool cover is really just a cool cover. I haven't read any of White's books either but maybe I'll try something. I hear decent things about her Paranormalcy series?
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this one fell so flat. Thanks for the honest review, at any rate.
You and I had the exact same thoughts about this book! I was so mad at being deceived by the gorgeous cover. I never could form any emotional connection with any of the characters. And I completely agree with about the flashbacks. I was talking with a friend on GR and I mentioned that to her. I was pretty much confused all throughout the book.
ReplyDeleteGreat honest review, Jenni and I'm sorry that this book didn't work out for you.
Great review! This one was such a disappointment. :( I think the ending is the only reason I gave Mind Games a slightly higher rating too. That's almost why it felt like a really long prologue for me. It was all flash backs, flash backs, flash backs, then BAM—something exciting.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm bummed we didn't enjoy it more. :( I thought it was going to be amazing..
=( 2 stars? Hmhhh.. I'm glad that even though you got if for free from a publisher, you were brave enough to express your thoughts and I know I can trust you with your opinion. I'm bummed that you didn't enjoy it that much though, because I'm looking forward to reading this. I think the cover and the synopsis are what pull me in with this one, because so far I haven't seen a single 5/4 star review on this one among the blogs I follow or on GR. I think it's only fair that you gave it two stars if you didn't connect with the characters and, moreover, they even annyoed you, then of course, you cannot possibly give this one a high rating. It's a shame though.. I might have to reconsider getting this one, because every review I've seen so far has something negative to say.. -.-
ReplyDeleteAck. This book did not appeal to me at all, and now I'm really glad. I've seen, like, one review that was positive. I don't like books that jump around w/no apparent pattern. I love your sandwich analogy!
ReplyDeleteOh, no! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one at all. I finished it just yesterday, and I defintiely enjoyed it more than you did, but I'm odd about books sometimes. I just figured the three taps served to remind her of the three people she killed, and it constantly reminded me of that too, which I kind of liked.
ReplyDeleteI can see why you'd find it annoying, though. I always fall for peculiar writing style, it's a weakness of mine.
Fantastic review, though, Jenni.
Every time being a cover whore backfires, I'm surprised. Why am I always surprised? I just sit there, staring at the cover and going "BUT YOU'RE SO PRETTY." It is not a pretty sight, me blubbering over the book. Why can't all beauty be core deep? *pouts*
ReplyDeleteNope. Not a single person that I liked. Also, pretty sure that school had like four people. Did it really or did she just never mention seeing other people for some reason? I swear there were as many staff as students.
Gah, the repetitiveness. Seriously, skimming was the only way to not murder Fia.
You're nicer than I am. This was my fourth and last White novel, unless down the road I hear that her writing has matured.
It's funny because I loved this book. I thought Fia was so broken and flawed. The pacing seemed really good to me. I always like morally ambiguous protagonists, so maybe that's why it appealed to me....

I think she fell flat after the last book of the Paranormalcy series :-( I will still read it, but I'll anticipate disappointment now. boo! And I really like her as an author too!
ReplyDeleteYou already know how I feel about this one. And dude!! For real, that ending was epic, but the rest of the book was like WTF!!? I usually love dual POV's but this one was just too much of a mess for me. I also kept thinking of Annie as the younger sister even though she was the older one. Just the way she acted made her seem immature and younger. The finger taps coincided with the people she has killed, that's why she did that. It was still annoying though.
ReplyDeleteI have a really hard time with books if I don't like any of the characters, too. And "frustrating," "selfish," and "annoying" combined with pacing issues sounds really awful. So weird, because my coblogger really enjoyed this! I may try to read it again to see if I feel any differently, but after seeing your review... :x

It's interesting how we were drawn to gorgeous covers and felt excited by the blurbs and then crashed from cloud 9 when we read the books. Maybe I'll wait till the sequel is out before deciding if I'll pick this series up. Thanks for the review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI hate it when I'm tricked by a pretty cover! I think I'll steer clear of this one. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn’t like this one, Jenni! I didn’t like it either, though, and I haven’t read a positive review yet, so at least you know you have company! I’m hoping White will tell a better story in the sequel, but I do have my doubts.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry this one was a miss for you. I hate when I can't relate to any of the characters. I love your sandwich analogy. :-) I feel like that happens a lot to me when I read—the beginning knocks my socks off, there's all this boring mush in the middle, and then the ending picks it up again. Thanks for such an insightful and honest review!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed White's paranormalcy trilogy because they were quick, cute and fun reads. When I saw Mind Game's cover and read the synopsis I was instantly reeled in. How could MG be anything BUT epic? Well... according to you and a heck of a lot of other bloggers it can be. The storyline seems all over the place and the characters sound super annoying. I just don't understand! KW also has another new series coming out in October, this one featuring Egyptian mythology. I'm already very weary of it. Sorry this book was such a bummer! Hopefully the next couple you read will be amazing & make you forget about this one.
ReplyDeleteBAHAHAHA JENNI COVER WHORES FTW. <3 :') But omg you're right the cover is gorgeous! It's such a shame that it wasn't any good though, because the ideology is so intriguing. Aw I hate characters like Fia who start out really cool but then totally deflate. -.-' Anyway, thanks for the honest review chickie! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL COVER WHORE<333 Though honestly, the AU/UK cover for this isn't pretty AT ALL. I'm sorry this didn't impress you...I actually quite liked Paranormalcy (though admittedly, I haven't felt the urge to read the 2nd & 3rd books!) but I think I'll skip this one. You're not the first to have problems with the pacing and characters :( Thank you for the honest review, Jenni<3
ReplyDeleteI am a cover whore too and I love this one. :) Sorry you didn't care for it though. I liked the Paranormalcy books, but I keep seeing mixed reviews for this one. I think this will be one of those I wait for my library carries it. :(

Oh no! I have to read this one soon and now I'm not looking forward to it ... I guess I'll just have to dive in and see how it goes! The cover's pretty gorgeous, at least. Too bad that sounds like that's the only thing going for it. :(
ReplyDeleteUrg, I only just started reading this one and I can't say your review is giving me a strong urge to continue... but continue I will. I never DNF anything and I am determined to see for myself how I feel about the story. I think maybe I'll just lower my expectations a bit and that will help. The characters do sound pretty annoying though. This is also my first Kiersten White book and it's a shame that it might end up being a bad sandwich.
ReplyDeleteA bad experience, rather. LOL! See what you made me do...
Delete:ASKDJ, I was about to read this one. I had read another review that was the opposite of yours, but honestly, I kind of trust you more. The characters just seem really frustrating. Also, don't read her other books... just don't. Unless you want the same thing you got this time. It was sooooo boring.
ReplyDeleteUgh, that's so off-putting. I hate it when covers are more awesome than the actually story. I need there to be a balance. I wanted to read this one, but now I can put it off and read it eventually.
ReplyDeleteUh-oh, this is the second bad review I've come across today for this book. And I was so looking forward to it -- the cover is so beautiful! But if I don't like the characters (I can deal with annoying characters every once and a while, like when Courtney Summer has a dislikable MC) and there's pacing issues? I don't think I can take that. I think I'm going to check it out from the library and give it a shot, that way if I don't like it then at least I didn't buy it.
