Hello everybody!
So it is Sunday night and the Grammy's are on and I don't feel like making a vlog so this weeks post is going to be a regular blog post. I fail, I know. This weeks topic was suggested by Mel of A Daily Prophecy, she said: "How do you feel about the real "bad boys" trend? The unhealthy relationships?" I love this topic because it is such a polarizing one and there are so many different ways to look at it. I know for me, I always find myself falling for the bad boys; the one who is always in trouble and sexy in a bad way. There is something so sexy about being the one girl that man wants and being the one girl who makes him want to settle down and change his ways for you.
Now there are so many different levels of bad guys so I wanted to talk about some books and use examples. Remember, these are just books that I have read, there are so many other examples and I want to hear about them! So here we go...
The-Bad-Boys-That-Are-Oh-So-Good:

These are bad boys that I fell head over heels for! Lucas has his dark past and he was a very secluded person. Getting to watch him open up like he did to Jacqueline really made me love him. Like I said before, there is just something about being THAT girl that is so appealing. Daemon is a dick, a total dick, but he loves Katy and would do anything for her therefore I love him. Actually the spark of that series has kind of fizzled out for me but that is all Katy's fault because her "I shouldn't be with him" thing, it really grated on my in Onyx. I have yet to read Opal, but I really hope that there isn't as much back and forth in it. From Everneath it was always Cole for me. He represented danger and a darkness that is sexy. And when it comes to Sins & Needles I am going to have to keep it short because there is so much I wanted to say about Camden. Now he isn't the baddest of the bad in that book, that spot is saved for Javier, but Camden has his own dark dealings and twisted methods and he really knew how to man handle Ellie. Steak, anyone?
On-The-Cusp-Of-Being-Too-Bad
Travis Maddox, where do I even start with this guy? I admit, he was almost too bad for me to fall for him. But again, his need to protect Abby and the slow way that he opened up to her and we found out why he was so rough around the edges really won me over in the end. Now the pacing in that one is a whole other story, I wasn't a fan of the second half at all but I did really like the first half. I remember prior to reading this one I had heard so much about how terrible Travis was and how it was so unhealthy and psychotic, etc. etc. you name it. But, I found that it was a college relationship with a guy who had issues. Yes, Travis was angry and possessive of Abby but I thought the story backed up the why to it all so it worked for me.
Bad-Boys-That-Did-Not-Work
I am going to try to avoid getting ranty here because this post is running pretty long but it's not going to be easy. In the case of The Duff I was so turned off by that douchebag Wesley. He was such an asshole! The fact that he created the term DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) and then ended up banging the girl who he deemed the DUFF in her circle and then proceeded to call her "Duffy" as if it was a term of fucking endearment really pissed me off. The relationship made me so mad in that book. I have no problem with people being fuck buddies or whatever they want, but even in a situation like that there has to be a level of respect and Bianca going along with it all while he called her that made me sick. As for The Vincent Boys I have to admit up front that it was a DNF for me. The speed at which Beau jumped in on Ashton when Sawyer was out of town made me sick. Beau's cousin Sawyer is a church going goodie two shoes and once he is out of town he is sneaking over to Sawyer's girlfriends house and trying to get in her pants! Now, she wasn't innocent and was definitely a willing participant but it didn't work for me because it made Beau out to be a snake who I could never fall for so there was no way the story would work for me!
Ok so that last paragraph did end up getting a little ranty but I am done now, I promise. Oh and sorry about all the profanity. But my list makes me so curious about what other people think so be sure to weigh in on this one. Do bad boys work for you? Let me know when they do and when they don't!

Ooohh great choices! Definitely agree with you on Daemon, Camden, Travis and Beau. (Well I did like Beau but what he did with Ash behind Sawyer's back is disturbing and frankly, sick:/) I'm going to have to add Noah Hutchins,Alex Fuentes and Warner (from Shatter Me/Unravel Me) to the "Bad boys that are oh-so-good" list as well :D
ReplyDeleteLove this post!<3
I need to read the Shatter Me books, I always hear so much about them and I am really curious about the characters!
DeleteI haven't really met any of these boys, except for Daemon, of course, but the difference between these groups is very clear. It's a thin line the authors often cross, and I tend to stop reading when I feel that it's too much.
ReplyDeleteDaemon definitely works for me, and guys like Adrian Ivashkov, but I can't, at this moment, think of a bad example to save my life. Probably because I usually stop reading and then do what I can to erase them from my memory.
Great post!
Yeah bad boys can be really hard to take and for me if I don't like the characters it's kind of a deal breaker for the book so I can see why you would step away from them.
DeleteYou've got a very interesting list there. I really like a bad boy provided he isn't a total dickhead to the heroine from start to finish. If he starts out flawed he needs to grow.
ReplyDeleteThere are certain things that are a no-go for me and a situation like Ashton and Beau's is one of them. I simply couldn't respect those two. All I could do reading that was feel horribly sorry for Sawyer. (Heck, I even gave Anna and the French Kiss hell for this back when I started my blog. If a guy is taken, he's TAKEN. I don't care how bitchy his gf is. It makes a heroine look really slimy... I mean, what kinda person fixates on someone who isn't available. *stops rambling*)
Anyway, great topic choice and something I actually have scheduled for a Thoughts on Thursday post, although I'm planning to talk about 'flavors' or 'degrees' of bad boys, villain redemption through love and the challenges faced in writing this stuff.
I had a lot of fun reading your post and I may need to get Everneath and get around to reading Easy.
Have a great day!
Yes! I like how you put it that they start out flawed and grow. A good explanation of WHY he is that way is so important.
DeleteYea, I couldn't finish Vincent because it was all so twisted and there was no way I was going to be able to buy into the love story in it at all.
Thanks for stopping by!
As it was said somewhere (I don't remember where I read it, to be honest, I think it was on some picture at tumblr), I think every girl wants do be the the one for whom the guy becomes good and every guy wants their girl to turn bad (sexy? cheeky?) for them. DAEMON!!!!! Eeek! Love him so much! Lucas *sigh* =) I'm 100% team Jack (haven't read Everbound yet, though), but I have so much love for Cole, too. I'd give Jack to Nikki and take delicious Cole for myself;) I love Travis. I think they both had issues, Abby and him, but at the end of the day they made it work. If we're talking about guys with issues, I think Mr. Christian Gray is on a whole another level. This guy is abusive towards women! Travis only beats up men, because he needs the money and he's an alpha. I won't judge anyone, but I think being abusive towards women, for pleasure or not, is not umm.. nice? I don't want to offend anyone, so let us just leave it at that. I actually liked Beau and how he acted with Ashton, but I wasn't a fan of the cheating either. Wesley I hated and this book wasn't for me either. To name some of my own favorites, I'd say Kellan Kyle (Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens), Adrian Ivashkov (Vampire Academy/Bloodlines by Richelle Mead), Colt (Charade by Nyrae Dawn) AND KAIDAN ROWE (SWEET EVIL BY WENDY HIGGINS). There're no words to express how much I adore these guys, they're fantastic! I wish Ronald Weasley would count as a bad ass, but I guess he does - being the best friend of the greatest wizards of all time and having saved him from death quite a few times. LOL! This is a great post and I can't wait to see what Amy and Giselle think. Good to know we have common love interests in books, thehee;) Have a wonderful day, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI COMPLETELY FORGOT KAIDEN! YES! I loved him so much too. Perfect example girl.
DeleteI haven't read FSoG so I couldn't comment on Christian but I totally see what you mean about his aggression towards women. I don't know how I feel about the whole bondage thing, it scares me!
LOL! Christian.. Hmh.. I couldn't even begin to explain how wrong he is. He is sexy though, but someone who beats women to pleasure himself and them just makes me want to womit all over myself and that'd be gross. Yuck! At the end of the day, you can easily see some growth in both of the main characters in FSoG, but the writing is just pure awful and I'm more than certain that you'd hate the writing.. BUT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR REVIEW ON THAT BOOK, LOL!!! I bet I'd have 10000 times better time reading your review than all those three books (I'm not even sure why I bothered..).
DeleteJENNI! I cannot remember what you look like! WHERE IS YOUR FACE? Lazy. Simply lazy.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling I would hate Daemon. I'm just saying. Also, I would argue that Lucas and Camden just LOOK like bad boys. They are marshmallows inside, but that's why they're so hot. Cole IS a bad boy, and I do love him. One of the few.
Wow, Travis is only on the cusp? Wow, how on earth is Wesley worse than Travis? Travis totally going to beat Abby instead of the dudes hitting on her someday, and Wesley just gave Bianca an insulting nickname she's not bothered by. Girl, you're crazy.
I know I am lazy and I suck this week. Waaaahhhh!
DeleteYou probably would hate Daemon, I am curious to see what you would have to say if you ever read one of those books. Yay for Cole!
LOL that's pretty presumptuous. I could understand the growth in Abby & Travis's relationship, they had issues, everyone does. But I'll never respect a relationship where the girl lets the guy call her Duffy *eyeroll* have a little self respect!
I might read them someday, but everyone loves them so much that I'm pretty sure I'll hate them and then Armentrout fangirls will egg my blog.
DeleteMeh, but at least Bianca knows that Wesley's a dipshit and accepts that about him. I'm not sure that Abby knows that he's going to be a wife-beater later.
LOL there will definitely be eggs. I really liked the first one but the second one had way too much back and forth. I get so sick of the "I like him but I shouldn't be with him." Or the kissing and then the jumping back "this needs to stop!" I think that's why I am coming to like New Adult so much. At least there they bone and get it over with.
DeleteYou can't know that! LOL My husband was a big fighter in high school and always getting into trouble with the law (<--- haha it sounds like he lived in a western!) and he would never lay a finger on me.
Well, not in a bad way lay a finger on me I mean. We do touch. Sometimes. Not often.
DeleteBhahahahahha @ not often. I'd love to see what Christina has to say about Armentrout's novels. I haven't read Opal yet, but I know for a fact that it gets better and Katy actually doesn't want certain things to stop;) You should give it a try! I'm going to read it probably sometime near Origin's release date, because I don't even want to know why so many people were crying when they finished Opal and were complaining about that cliff hanger.. -.- Okay, such a lie, I want to, but I'm scared so I'm not going to read it near any time soon if I have any say in that, lol.
DeleteAww I miss your face!!! Okay, so great post babe. I love that there are so many books with "bad boys" in them so each of us can really ponder the subject well and have not too many double ups I think. I do have some of the same as you, but I have more different ones. I totally agree with you about Daemon, though you have to read Opal. Katy and Daemon are great in that one!! He is one of my favorite bad boys!! For the rest of my good bad boys and bad bad boys you have to wait until Saturday though. ;)
ReplyDeleteSo excited to see your post! I know I failed with no vlog this week but at least I did a post! Give me points for that lady!
DeleteYou are still awesome!! You are forgiven since yesterday was your Birthday and all too. ;) I am sure I will skip on vlogs sometimes. I just miss your face when you don't vlog.
DeleteI think it must be so hard to create a bad boy ... I mean, you want them to come across as bad, but not as a complete ass. AND it has to be believable to the readers ... I couldn't do it!
ReplyDeleteI did love Easy ... and you're right about The Vincent Boys ... it IS a little creepy how fast Beau swooped in!
Yeah I agree. It's hard to create someone bad and still make people fall for him.
DeleteYes! Beau is a SNAKE!
I think it takes a lot for me to like a bad boy. And he has to be a specific type or I really dislike him. The main criteria is to not be creepy. That was my huge problem in Hush Hush. The guy was so creepy, I would have called the police on him ages ago!
ReplyDeleteBut if he is a bad boy with redeeming qualities (or even just nice manners), then I can get on board!
Great post Jenni (although I wish it had been a vlog)!
LOL I remember at Brie's the big talk about Hush, Hush. I haven't read that one and I doubt I ever will but I have to admit, I am curious!
DeleteYes! A bad boy definitely needs to be layered.
Gah I didn't like Cole. I did not hate him or wtv, I just didn't like him. *shrugs* I was the other guy all the way--whatever his name was! haha. I also can't wait to read Beautiful Disaster dude I was totally supposed to read that in like November.. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteLOL @ Having no problem with fuck buddies >.<
Vincent Boys is one that I've been iffy about it seems everyone loved it and then the bad reviews popped up. Not sure I would like any books with cheaters, especially if we're meant to root for him and the homewrecker or something.
Sins & Needles' Camden! *swoon*
First off...Camden= OMFG HOTTEST ASS BAD BOY EVER!
ReplyDeleteSecond...Thank you for speaking your mind about Vincent Boys. This was my problem with the book. I enjoyed it over all but those two hopped in the sack (or back of the truck) way too easily. WTH?
I like bad boys sometimes, but it really depends on how they're written, and if they have any redeeming qualities about them. I agree with you on the Vincent Boys--I was not into that book at all. And I've heard horrendous this about the guy in BD.
ReplyDeleteI liked Lucas in EASY, though. See? Depends on how they're written!
Wendy @ The Midnight Garden
Just started onyx and definitely having the same issues. Their relationship could be on fire, yet she is being so resistant. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI love bad boys like kai Rowe,Noah shaw, jude ryder, & lucas maxfield.
I agree- travis could be sweet at times but other times he was too much & it was borderline scary/unhealthy.
Loved the post - lots of fun. Us readers love to talk about our book boys (;
I most certainly have a weakness for the redeemable, bad boy with a hidden heart. The tortured soul is my BIG weakness haha. I hate when boys are really too bad and either degrading or just plain nuts. I didn't care for either of the 'bad-boys' in Masque of the Red Death AT ALL cause they were just plain douches to me. I'm hoping I'll be able to fall for Daemon despite his jerk reputation! Great post, topic & discussion Jenni :)
ReplyDeleteI love this post!!! Honestly, bad boys are all over the map for me. It's not so much about the fact that they're bad, it's about how they're portrayed. Most of the time I will love a bad boy only if I have a reason to love him. Is he bad, but has a sweet, sensitive side? Love that! Is he bad but still a dick? Not for me.
ReplyDeleteFor example: Travis. I loved him to bits. Yeah he's really controlling and over the top and their relationship is pretty insane.. but I could tell that Travis was actually a sweet guy.
But Daemon.. he's one that was too much for me. As you said, he is a dick, a total dick. It was too much for me to handle! It's one thing to be a bit of a dick when you're having a fight (see Travis), but to be a total dick all the time??? For me, that was Daemon. :(
I like my bad boys dark and mysterious, but they can't be complete jerks.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind reading about the "unhealthy" relationships, because I know that they're FICTION! In reality, if a guy was stalking me I would be on the phone with the cops in no time flat! But, I admit it freely, between the covers of a book, the bad boys get my blood pumping!
The problem always lies with the younger teens who don't understand the difference between fiction and non, and learn about relationships from these books. I hate to think of a younger generation picking up pointers from these guys! Yikes!
Thanks for sharing the bad boys that you like and dislike. It's really fun to read your view, Jenni! For me, I really like the chemistry between Daemon and Katy in the Lux series. I don't mind bad boys with a brooding mood, but I don't particularly like bad boys with anger issues - it's really hard for me to fantasize on a book boyfriend that is angry and acts like a time bomb.
ReplyDeleteI'm torn...in some cases, I adore the bad boy (Jeb in Splintered) and in some cases, all I want is the good guy (Fred in Poison). Daemon Black drives me crazy, but kind of in a good way. I was torn between Cole and Jack in Everneath - I'm about to start Everbound, so we'll see.
ReplyDeleteI ended up DNFing Beautiful Disaster because Travis was too much for me.
I agree with Henrietta. It's the broody boys that do it for me, not the anger management boys.
Great topic!
Yep. Pretty much agree with everything that you said.
ReplyDeleteYou won't believe this but I just finished writing a paper about bad boys in YA for my writing class.
I hated hated hated Travis with a passion. His violent nature didn't bode well with me and I ended up hating that book so much.
As for Lucas, I agree! He wasn't exactly a bad boy in the sense that he was violent or anything, but he was definitely broody like Henrietta and Ems above mentioned. That's what made him such an appealing character.
I can tolerate a broody guy, but a jerk? Nopes.
Oh and I disliked Beau too. In fact, I disliked every single person in that series. They are all so stupid! >.<
Great post, Jenni! :)
Fun post!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I never considered Lucas as a "bad boy". He seemed pretty good all the way, to me at least.
I still need to read Beautiful Disaster. I have been putting that one off for over a year now.
My favorite bad boys are the guys who are actually good guys, but are a little rough around the edges. I can think of soooo many. Too many to name!
Good topic! Usually my favorite books are the ones with the Bad Boys, but it doesn't always work for me. Bad boys work for me only if they're sweet, protective, loving, etc. to the heroine. I cannot STAND the bad boys who are rude and verging on abusive towards the woman they're suppose to get with. The worst "bad boy" I've encountered in a book has Anthony from Consequences. He takes abuse to the next level, like smack you around and rape you right after. NOT OKAY.
ReplyDeleteI definitely fall for the bad boys the hardest in books or tend to vote in their favor. I.E. TVD's Damon Salvatore, VA's Adrian Ivashkov. But there's got to be a limit to their 'tude. If a guy is a jerk-y character to begin with he has to A. have a legit reason why he's the way he is and B. not cross a certain ass-y line. Some things are irreversible like physical and other types of abuse. BTW: totally team Cole!
ReplyDeleteLove this discussion topic! I'm a huge sucker for bad boys, but when they're not done well it can open up a whole other can of worms (like if the guy is verbally/physically abusive, or does irredeemably awful things). Your list of guys that work is SPOT ON. God do I love Daemon, Lucas and Cole. Now I'm totally reading Sins and Needles cause I need to meet this Camden, clearly. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your list of bad boys that are oh so good. I also agree with your views on Travis. I didn’t really have a problem with him as much as Abby. I hated her! And he was almost too much to love but he managed to barely skim the line from passionate and protective to crazy and possessive.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t read The DUFF and this Wesley guy sounds awful!
I LOVE Beau! I was so hoping you liked this book :(
He is actually one of the sweetest book jerks ever and I ended up hating goody-two-shoes Sawyer by the end of this book. Of course, Abbi told him story and ended up really liking him too.
Let’s see, who else are my favorite bad boys…
Dean Holder from Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
Colt from Charade by Nyrae Dawn
Jude Ryder from Crash and Clash b Nicole Williams
Noah from Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry
Kai from Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
