Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away. Can I get a hell yes for this year continuing to be the year of awesome sequels? *waits for it* Ok, thank you. So you can tell where this review is going. I have not run into one sophomore slump yet this year and I hope to goodness that it stays that way. Everbound was Everneath on crack, which means that the angst was amped up and the action was coming at me in droves. I enjoyed this follow-up so much, maybe even more than its predecessor.
Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.
Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.
In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.
I have admit that I remembered barely anything of Everneath when I went into reading this novel. Thankfully Ashton does a wonderful job of recapping all of the important bits without it feeling like a giant info dump right off the bat. Nicki is dealing with the loss of Jack and she feels responsible for him being in the Everneath. I think Nicki could probably be taken as pretty whiney in this installment but after all that she went through and her sudden loss of Jack I think it was warranted. I loved how she wasn’t just wallowing in it, she was being proactive and trying to find anyway that she could save him. Once Cole comes back into her life, she sees an opportunity to go down (up?) and save Jack and from there the story moved at a break neck pace.
I mentioned that I don’t really remember too much from Everneath, one thing I definitely don’t remember is it being as funny as I found Everbound. The way that Cole and Nikki pick at each other had me laughing in more than one instant and it made reading this novel that much more fun. I am a sucker for a bad boy and a huge Cole fan. This one made me even more so because we see a completely new side of him and I think Nikki may be softening him up a bit. It was frustrating that Nikki seemed completely oblivious to how much Cole loves her, there were so many times that I just wanted her to grab him and smooch his lips off.
One thing that we get a lot more of here is the world of the Everneath. It was exhilarating reading Cole, Nikki & Max go through whatever the Everneath threw at them and I loved getting to know more about it. Through that we also got a lot more mythology weaved into the tale which worked seamlessly. It really felt like the action didn’t really let up in the last half and right when the story was wrapping up Ashton threw a twist at me that I had NO IDEA WAS COMING. I didn’t even suspect it, it didn’t cross my mind and I almost threw my book when I realized it was ending on that note.
Leaving off at a definite high point and leaving me with a plethora of questions, Everbound is an awesome sequel that I won’t soon forget. I think this is one people will be talking about for a long time to come.

Ah I am so excited for this one!!! I just need some time to read it finally! I'm so happy to see it gets so many great reviews:) Can't wait to meet Cole again!
ReplyDeleteI don't think Everneath was funny at all. It had some snarky jokes here and there, but it was quite depressing, to be honest. I really liked it though and I cannot wait to read about Nikki, Cole and Jack some more. I think you need to read Neverfall, because I don't know if it's explained here, but Cole has a theory of why Nikki survived the Feed. Jenny at Supernaturalsnark told in her review that even though Nikki told the story, it was Cole's book. Ugh, such a huge fan of Cole! Team Jack, but a HUGE fan of Cole. Yay! I can't wait to devour this one:) THANK YOUUUU FOR THIS!!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG that ending!! I totally didn't see that coming either and I was like "WTF!! For Real?!!" Lol!! I am dying for the next book after the way this one ended!! As always, fab review babe!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you liked this one! I didn't care much for the way Everneath ended, but I'm hoping Everbound will pick up for me. Great review!

Ahhh! I need to read this one right now! I am still reeling from Everneath and I need to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am definitely Team Cole!
Glad to hear it was an amazing sequel. I really keep meaning to read the first.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading,

Who wouldn't love awesome sequels? It sounds like Jack is not really present in this installment but I'm glad that Nikki is not wallowing in loss. Loved your review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteHELL YES. Sequels are ruling 2013 so far. They're unstoppable! I love it when authors can bring you up to speed without the dreaded infodump. Brodi Ashton is awesome, so I really shouldn't be surprised. Love your review! :-)
ReplyDeleteThankful for the recaps because I remember NOTHING and it often makes me unenthusiastic about a sequel bc I figure I won't like it much not remember wtf was evening going on. I have seen SO many great reviews on this one though I def want to read it. I also don't remember Everneath being funny and I think I would remember so that's cool that she added some humor in it. I'm also excited to see if I will actually be surprised for once! :D
ReplyDeleteOOh Kara's button on the sidebar! SO PRETTEH!
I personally didn’t care for Everneath too much, so it’s great to hear that Everbound is a lot better (everyone seems to agree on this point, too, even those who didn’t care for book 1 as much.) Great review, Jenni—if and when I ever get around to picking this one up, I’m looking forward to the banter between Nikki and Cole for sure.
ReplyDeleteRIGHT? I'm so epically happy just because Everbound was just so. AMAZING and you see tons more of Everbound and I'm totally Team Jack lol ;P I mean seriously, sometimes I forget so much about the previous books in a series that half of the book is just me going "I MUST REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED!" and then it never comes back >.< But Brodi definitely did an awesome job with recapping!
ReplyDeleteAwesome review as always!
OMG HAPPY BLOGOVERSARY!!!!!!!

Even though I've been neglecting visiting your blog because I CAN'T HANDLE THE AWESOME.
HE'LL YES! I can't believe how good sequels have been lately. I still haven't read my copy of Everneath (boo!), but I can't wait to get started. I want to know what the big twist is, Jenni! So happy you enjoyed Everbound so much!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you liked it. I have heard so much of this series and it sounds so intriguing. Also LOVE the covers and I really hate it when sophomore books are so disappointing that you do not wanna continue the series. I am glad that this was not the case here
ReplyDeleteGREAT review, Jenni!

I'm happy to hear this one is funnier! I had middling feelings about the first book, so I was surprised when I went on the author's website and saw how funny she was there because it really didn't come across in Everneath. (And Cynthia Hand's always talking about how hilarious she is, too!) I may pick this one up sometime to see if I like this better. Great review!

Heh, that is an awesome opening paragraph. Haven't started this series yet (I am a bit conflicted on whether or not I would like it), but you're definitely selling this sequel!
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I can't wait to read this one. I love the mythology in this series. :)

I wasn’t planning on continuing with this series but after seeing all the great reviews on this book I know I have to read it. I might be team Cole. Bad boys :)
