You or your Alt? Only one will survive.
The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.
Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.
Elsie Chapman's suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.(
West is a 15 year old girl who has no one left. She's lost both of her parents and right at the beginning of the novel she loses the one sibling she has left as he dies a casualty in his best friends completion. I had my ups and downs with West, in the beginning I loved how she was so level headed and sure of her facts. When her brothers friend comes in just after receiving his assignment she knows that right then is the time to act. She pushes Chord into action and goes with him to find his Alt. While Chord is carrying out her assignment she loses her brother, Luc, and straight after that I was left to really question her. I didn't like how she closed up and I thought she made some pretty reckless decisions about where her life would go and I'm not sure I was given enough information to back up her decision to do so. I spent much of the middle of the novel kind of annoyed at her for becoming an assassin and also for running from her assignment for so damn long. Upon finishing the book I definitely think the last few chapters really vindicated West in my eyes and looking at the novel as a whole I think my middle frustrations with her were necessary for her progression as a character.
The secondary characters here aren't as well developed as West becomes. She has Chord by her side and also as her love interest but that's about it. I liked Chord, his persistence to be by her side and help out in any way he could definitely made me like him but I don't think I got to know him near enough to really connect with him. We get to see her family in flashbacks throughout the story but to me those felt pretty ineffective and awkward. In most flashbacks I found myself flipping back pages to see exactly how we were transitioned into it because I had no idea why all these characters were around all of a sudden. I really wish there was more development put into the side characters here so the novel would have felt a bit more whole to me and had me feeling for more of the people in it.
Another aspect that fell a bit short for me was the world building. I have to admit that there were details that I loved, so I will start with those. I loved that once an Alt was active they were on their own. They had to fend for themselves and be smart. Sure, they could get food, a bed to sleep in, and ride the train for free but they would have to succumb to a retina scan that would mark their location in a log easily accessible by their Alt. Sure they could access the log and find out exactly where their Alt is at any time but to do that they would also have a retina scan that would track their location. Little twisted details like that had me really fascinated with the world Chapman built, but I was also left with more than a few questions. I would have liked to know more about how the world came to be the way that it was, we know it was a vaccine but I don't think we were given enough information as to what events actually led up to this society. I also would like to know more about the judicial system within the city, some deaths are ok but when are they not? And what exactly are they building their society of the strongest to fight against?
All of these questions are ones that I hope will be addressed much more in the sequel and I hope we get to know much more about the characters still remaining. As a whole I really enjoyed Dualed. It was fascinating society with an MC that I came to like very much. I'm hoping that the issues I had with it are simply because it is an intro into a series and I am anxious to see where the series goes next.

Like you and every other blogger, I knew I had to read this as soon as I saw the cover & read the blurb :P World-building isn't really a huge factor for me when I read dystopian books (or any genre, in fact!) & I'm glad you liked West and the story! I hope I can read this very soon :)
ReplyDeleteWell this is definitely interesting. I have read a lot of mixed feelings about it from different bloggers so I am not sure if I will give it a try or not
ReplyDeleteBut it is definitely lovely
Thanks for the review, Jenni

Is today unofficial Post Your Dualed Review day? This is like the 5th review for this book I've read today :D LOL!
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of what you said. West hypocrisy ANNOYED me so much, and the world building was shaky, and some of the other characters needed more development.
It does sound like you enjoyed this book a bit more than I did though, and I'm happy for you! I wish I was able to enjoy it a little more too just because I was SO excited for this book. I fell in love with the cover and the synopsis immediately. I just wish it delivered a bit more for me..
Awesome review, as always!
Nice review and I agree with pretty much everything you said as my review last week outlined the majority of the same problems. I'll continue with the series but definitely am not as amped as I thought I'd be.
ReplyDeleteWas she only 15? Huh. Ugh I know right? She sounded like she'd be a total badass and she hides and cowards away for so freaking long. And then she becomes an assassin, wtf is the point in that? And accepting all those contracts when you could be killing off the person who's coming for you. GAH!! DAMN YOU!!
ReplyDeleteI wish we got to know Chord more, too! I really liked him he was actually listening when she told him to leave (although he still found ways to make sure she was protected), instead of being a pest or, god forbid, whiny.
"some deaths are ok but when are they not? " Yes! I was wondering this the whole time. It seems like nothing is really controlled they just let people kill each other.
I really liked the ending too how she... and then she was not.. and the she went for.. and then boom chacalaca!
Well, I actually liked that whole thing about her becoming an assassin, and that she really wasn't as much of a badass as she pretends to be.
DeleteThe role as an assassin was something she initially took on so that she could get training and be ready, but then, once her own assignment came up, she used her job as an excuse to delay facing reality. She was scared and in denial.
Yeah, the world building made no sense at all. Oh well...
Wow, this is like the review of the day lol!! I have seen 3 reviews of it now. I was so excited for this one, but it seems to only begetting meh reviews from all the bloggers who have similar tastes as me. I suppose that's good so I won't go into it with high expectations and be let down lol. Great review chick!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds interesting, but that's too bad that it raised so many questions in the end ... Maybe those loose ends will be tied up in the rest of the series? See, that's why I hate series books sometimes ... I like it when the first book answers mostly everything, but leaves only a few things open for other books. I think each book should be able to stand on its own!
ReplyDeleteAnyway ... great review!
I think sounds like it will be an interesting read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. She sounds so young to become an assassin. I am definitely going to have to pick this one up. Great review.

I've heard mixed things about West, but I'm glad that you warmed to her eventually. I can sometimes forgive a few grey areas in the world-building if I like the rest of the book well enough. I'm not entirely sure if this will be for me, but I'll be sure to add it to the library list anyway. Great review, Jenni! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's cool that at the end of the book, you could look back and see that some of the issues w/West were part of her character development. It's too bad that almost all the reviews have been mixed. Dualed seems like a good concept.
ReplyDeleteThis one is on my kindle, but based on what I've heard, it's not quite as awesome as it could have been!
ReplyDeleteThe concept of the book sounds really unique. Thanks for sharing your view about West and the other characters. Knowing that you're anxious to read its sequel, I may have to reconsider adding this to my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteI was really excited for this book, but then I saw all these mixed reviews all over Goodreads and I admit that I was a little disappointed and lowered my expectations. Your review just gave me some hope!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that you had mixed thoughts on West. I don't like when a heroine confuses me too, but I'm glad in the end you did like her a little. As for the secondary characters, not many authors develop their secondary characters enough in my opinion.
I'm glad that you liked this book, Jenni! I'm looking forward to reading it! :)
Lovely review! :)
I've got an ARC for this one, but I've been pushing off reading it for a while now. A lot of bloggers have been saying that it didn't live up to its potential. I love the idea of alts, in a way it kind of reminds me of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and how every witch as a twin. I'm happy that you found some positive parts to reflect back on. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have read any reviews on this yet but it certainly sounds like an interesting read! I like this whole Alt idea; it sounds kind of exciting! I just may have to give this one a try :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like Unwind and The Lost Girl. It is getting luke-warm reviews. However, I will more than likely try to get this onto my reading list.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've read nothing but bad reviews for this, so this review as a much welcome breath of fresh air. I'm glad you seemed to enjoy it in spite of the issues with the worldbuilding and West's character (before the redemption in the end). I had such high hopes for this book, and was really bummed that it seemed to be striking out with everyone, but now I'm thinking I might still enjoy it with adjusted expectations. Thanks for your honest and thoughtful review!
ReplyDeleteOhh! You've definitely pointed out some things that I hadn't noticed when I was reading the book. I have to agree that the world building was lacking a bit, but I am excited to hopefully learn more about it all in the sequel.
ReplyDeleteI think I may be a bit too left brained and analytical a person for this one because I unfortunately didn't enjoy this one as much as you did. I just couldn't get past how nonsensical the world building was! But I am honestly happy that you were able to find something in this one that I couldn't find. And I hope the same goes for the sequel - I'll be curious to hear if you think the sequel improves upon the story!
ReplyDeleteI have seen some really negative reviews of this book and I am so disappointed because the plot sounds completely awesome. I haven't decided if I want to check it out or not but, thanks for your thoughts!

I was pretty pumped about this one right when I first heard about it...and then my interest sort of fizzled. I don't know why?! I've been curious to start reading reviews, I'm pleased that overall you liked this one though what was lacking has been brought up in quite a few reviews. Some were able to get past everything but others weren't. As much as the premise is unique I'm really not sure I'd be able to get past the inconsistencies in the plot & characters. Great review nonetheless chick, I'm definitely curious to see how you'll like the rest of the series - if it really improves from here I may have to follow suit & give it a try :)
