In our kick off post for this feature we received a lot of topic suggestions in the form of comments from people wanting us to to talk about bookish trends as far as genre's go. So this week we decided to tackle this broad topic and I will be talking about what I think is overdone and what genre I always turn to when I know that I need a good read that will really get to me.
First off I just want to throw out there that it can be pretty tiring reading only within the young adult umbrella. It seems as if years ago when Twilight came out it set a sort of standard when it came to paranormal love stories in YA. After that everything seemed to have a love triangle and it also started this theme where the guy tries to take himself out of the girls life to protect her. I have seen those two things in so many books since reading Twilight and it's really starting to grate on me. It has come to the point where if I am reading a book and a second character of the opposite sex of the MC is introduced I actually groan inwardly and assume that a triangle is about to rear its ugly head. I have seen a few instances where a love triangle was done successfully (Cynthia Hand's Unearthly series, Brodi Ashton's Everneath series and Jessica Shirvingtons Violet Eden Chapters to name a few) but more often than not it doesn't work and just feels completely unnecessary. I will often buy into a romance much more if the MC that I am following has set feelings and I can feel them grow instead of them always being torn and flip flopping back and forth.
Successful Love Triangles!
Another thing that is starting to wear on me in YA is the dystopian genre as a whole. I am dystopianed out you guys! There has been a huge influx of these since the success of The Hunger Games and they are all starting to blend together and not stand out in any way. I can name a few off hand that I have read in the beginning of this year alone that suffered from lack luster world building, annoying romances and characters that are some of the most unlikeable people I have read about (Natalie Whipple's Transparent, Erin Bowman's Taken, Elsie Chapman's Dualed, & Kiesten White's Mind Games.) None of these had the world building to back up the society that the author tried to create. With the rush of books with dystopian settings coming out the reader needs to be able to get a strong sense of the world. I need to know how this world came to be, what drives it and why the citizens live as they do. If I don't have enough information for the setting to be vivid in my mind it just doesn't work! I have to note that I have read one standout title that falls into this genre that I think everyone should give a try and that is The Program by Suzanne Young. I think this had solid world, character AND relationship building so it really stood out to me as a diamond in the rough.
2013 Dystopia's The Fell Short for Me:
Now onto what is the one fail safe for me, the genre that I always turn to when I need a good read in my life. Contemporary. Whether it is young adult or new adult, this is always the genre that I come back to time and time again for a good, solid read. I get so wrapped up in these stories because I can relate to them. I can't relate to being an invisible girl on the run, or having to kill my doppelganger or growing up in a society where men disappear at 18 but I can always find something to relate to in a contemp. These stories feature characters that I can see myself in, ones who are flawed, not perfect, and who are trying to find themselves. I'm still trying to find myself at 25! I am always looking for books that feel like a punch in the gut and that have me grabbing for my tissues. These stories often feel as if they are ripped out of the headlines and resonate with readers because there is something that they can grasp onto and relate to. I have read a few in the last 6 months that have stayed with me all this time and are ones that I can see so many people loving.

As an author this kind of post is invaluable to me. It's good to hear from the (avid) reader what they feel is working today and what isn't. I'm more of a Harry Potter 'adventure' kind of writer and have only delved lightly onto the subject of romance... although I have yet to write a love triangle!

I agree with love triangles. They are SO OVER!!! and done. Why don't authors listen to us, seriously? I have yet to meet a person who isn't overwhelmed at this point by love triangles. I like your picks of Unearthly and Everneath. I haven't read the sequels yet but so far I'm loving the romance lines and it doesn't feel to me as if I want to face palm myself in every other chapter. I just finished the Nightshade trilogy by Andrea Cremer and I think Ms. Cremer has gotten enough hate without me pointing out that it was one of the worst love triangle in the sense that what she did to one of the guys has infuriated the whole fandom. Who even does that? Ok. LOL I'm going to stop my rant. Moving on..
ReplyDeleteDystopia? Yes, please! I love this genre but as you said, it needs to have lots and lots of information on how it all came to be. I'm reading Shatter Me right now and even though the most unique part of this book is Tahereh Mafi's writing, the world is a little different from ours yet it's still our world. (I don't know how to explain it. I think you need to read it yourself to understand lol.) So for that reason we don't need a lot of backstory to back the 'how it came to be' up. Still, she delivers it in glimpses and I like it. PS. The masses really seem to be pleased with The Programm so good choice.
AS for contemporaries - they are the oyster to my world, baby! I just love this genre. It's not hard to live and breathe these worlds since they don't have these difficult, hard to understand worlds or epic creatures etc - they just are. I love that you pointed out the relatable factor - this is what sells these books. Even if you have a fantasy book in your hands or a dystopian, I need someone to have these problems with their parent, home, school, friends, world view - you name it! the characters need to be relatable and I need to be able to connect with them emotionally otherwise it won't be above three stars for me however original the concept may be.

But seriously, I totally agree with you about Embrace, Unearthly and Everneath, those were probably the only ones that I genuiy enjoyed. However I did find that Lincoln and Violet were rather angsty in the way they were like, "We can't be together." But Endless did break my heart D;
I'm getting sick of dystopians too now, I read one recently and totally beat the crap outta it. *sighs* And they used to be my favourite genre.

It seems lately that I have been enjoying the contemps more than anything else. I do enjoy some paranormal stories, but as for the dystopians, they are coming out so fast and most are so much alike. There has been a few that I read recently that were good, but the other not so much. I really like this topic. :D

There are only a few that really stand out for me: Divergent, Delirium, Blood Red Road, Legend, etc, but on the whole they do tend to fall short, maybe just because they have SO much to love up to. Contemporaries foreva, girl! Whenever I feel sad or a little down, there's nothing like a good, lighthearted contemporary to lift my spirits. I totally understand what you're saying. DeleteI agree with so much of what you said. I love dystopian books so much, but there are so many that just don't work or don't have the effort put in. Dystopian books need to have amazing world building or else the book will suck. THat's just kind of a fact. So to see dystopians out there that lack in world building really makes me cringe...

Love triangles! Ughh! They annoy so much especially when they are not well-written. I haven't been reading any YA paranormal book lately because I think I'm bored of the genre. Unless something mind-blowing comes out, I doubt that I'll go back to it.

I agree completely on love triangles Jenni! The ones you mentioned are definitely ones that are well-done, but those are so few and far between the drama-filled ones that make me cringe. There's enough drama that can happen between just two people, I see no reason to add a third. Look at how brilliant Easy was, and there was only Lucas! I loved that book like you wouldn't believe, and it basically sold me on the NA genre as a whole. Now I can't get enough:)

ReplyDeleteGreat post! I'm with you in so many ways. I've always been more of a contemporary girl, although I do enjoy a good paranormal or dystopian occasionally. I actually really liked Mind Games, but didn't like some dystopian reads that everyone else swooned for. I'm completely over triangles and think it is an overused trope in the world of YA, but especially in paranormal. I'm reading both The Program and Golden right now and am enjoying both of them.

Third, I love contemporary YA, but I don't seek out books that make me teary-eyed. I prefer books that make me laugh. :)
I am completely with you when it comes to those damn love-triangles! Ugh, it's like: enough already! One I think is REALLY well done though is the one in the Covenant Series by JLArmentrout! And I really have almost completely fallen out of the dystopian genre. There are just SO many out there and they all sound the same for the most part so I've almost given up on reading any at all. And with yours and Giselle's recent luck with them, none of the new ones are too appealing to me either o.O

Love triangles, yuck! Except for a few I ate most of them. I made a post a couple weeks ago bitching about love triangles (do’s and don’ts) it was fun to write. The ones that do get it right are delicious!

Contemporaries have a very special place for me. I will never NOT be in the mood for a good contemporary book. You have to read Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard. It’s amazing!
There are some dystopian that I love and will continue to read because they are a series, but I'm pretty tired of the genre currently. Love triangles can be tiring as well. I'd say one that did it well was The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepard.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many genres and types of YA novels out there, that even if I do get sick of one type (say dystopians) then I can just pick up a completely different type, like contemporary YA.
I'm trying to think of something original to say I'm sick of ... how about weak girl MCs that need other people to save her? A la Bella Swan. I like kickass females that might start out timid and unsure of their abilities, but in the end can stand on their own two legs. Not shockingly, this Damsel in Distress syndrome seems to be in paranormal YA more than anything else.

I have the same problems with love triangles, it can become cliche so easily that I tend to shy away from books that I know will have them. But then there's that one golden book with that great and believable triangle, and it gives me hope for the whole thing :)
ReplyDeleteMy safe heaven are crime/mystery books, a great Agatha Christie always makes me happy! So whenever I'm in a reading slump or need a bit of especial comfort I turn to my crime shelf.

It's getting to the point where I'll wait to read ARCs until I see if other bloggers are loving them, because the success rate is so low these days for me (and for that reason I stayed clear of Dualed, Taken and Transparent). I agree that contemporary is always a good fallback for me when I'm burned out by overdone genres and situations. From the looks of that company, I really need to read Golden! Amazing discussion :-)

ReplyDeleteUgh, I'm so tired of dystopias, and yet I keep picking them up like an insane person. I have no idea why. It's also true that reading YA only can be very tiring, but fortunately, I have urban fantasy, my very first love, to go back to every time YA becomes too much. Lately, I've been totally into steampunk, but who knows how long that'll last.
ReplyDeleteGreat post as usual, however, I disagree with the take on dystopian novels, maybe I just haven't read a great dystopian novel so I don't know what to compare it to. However, I do understand, as I'm sometimes scratching my head trying to figure out how and why is this world the way it is :( but said stories have still been entertaining and good reads, just lacked a background history on how and why the world became the way it is.

Still doesn't mean that there aren't some great ones out there and I've given up on the trend entirely, however (at least not for dystopias). Another common trend throughout all of literature ever basically that I continue to love is the whole "chosen one" story. And retellings/adaptations also never get old for me.

I haven't read any YA books for weeks! It's kind of been nice to read outside of that umbrella because so many of them can seem alike. Especially the dystopians. Of course, I think that if you read a great variety of books, you might not notice the things that are overdone so much ... :)
