If fate sent you an email, would you answer?
When teenage movie star Graham Larkin accidentally sends small town girl Ellie O'Neill an email about his pet pig, the two seventeen-year-olds strike up a witty and unforgettable correspondence, discussing everything under the sun, except for their names or backgrounds.
Then Graham finds out that Ellie's Maine hometown is the perfect location for his latest film, and he decides to take their relationship from online to in-person. But can a star as famous as Graham really start a relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie want to avoid the media's spotlight at all costs?
The first thing that I want to talk about is the writing and use of the third person perspective here. I oftentimes find myself getting frustrated with this perspective and unable to connect to the characters. I find it hard to get a feel for who they are when we are simply this all seeing person and not inside them dealing with their emotions. That was not the case here at all. There was actually a point about 20% in where I sat back and thought “holy crap this is third person!” I was blown away by how I was connecting with the characters and feeling everything that they went through. I also loved the writing in general, the use of flashbacks didn’t feel too heavily relied on and were always welcome additions to the story. It’s written in a very pretty, yet relatable way, Smith achieves a great balance here.
The characters were also well developed and each flawed in their own way. Ellie was an intelligent girl who had grown up with a family secret that she kept from everyone. In keeping the secret from her best friend, Quinn she realized that it’s kind of easy to keep things to yourself and kept her email relationship a secret as well. There was a lot of conflict between Ellie and Quinn in this novel because of that and I felt like I never really got a grip on their relationship, it didn’t feel as strong as it was supposed to be because they were not talking for 85% of the book. Quinn had seemed like a sassy girl who really cared about Ellie’s well being but I wish we got more of that in the book, instead of simply being told that’s how she is.
The romance is very sweet and I liked Graham a lot. I think a lot of the story was Ellie and him having to come to grips with the turmoil in their own life in order to finally work on things with each other. I liked the moments when they were together, Graham was incredibly sweet to Ellie and really struggled with her finding out who exactly he was. I also liked the star side of Grahams story. The paparazzi are always on his tail and it’s pretty intense how in his face they are. I think his story is a relevant one of how someone thrust into stardom might feel. He was really displaced in this new life, and was trying hard to have his parents realize that he was still the same boy he always was.
Having liked the characters and the writing so much you are probably left wondering what went wrong? Well I’m not exactly sure, somewhere along the way, I think probably when Ellie set out to find her father the story just lost me. I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is, maybe it just felt a little too long and dragged out to me. I wanted more of the romance between Graham and Ellie that had me smiling in the beginning, but the book kept stepping away from that. I had come into the book wanting a sweet romance and I feel like for much of the story I was robbed of that to deal with their family issues.
My issue with the book is entirely personal and I am sure that a lot of people will disagree with me but it’s just how I felt about it. The story is full of charm, fantastic writing and really good characters but everything just felt a little too easy for me. I am a huge fan of Jennifer E. Smith’s writing and can’t wait to read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, but this story just went off in too many directions for me and because of that the romance fell flat towards the end.

Nope, you're not the only one. I felt exactly the same way reading this. There were moments of pure brilliance, but the slipped away when the story changed directions.
ReplyDeleteYou must try Statistical Probability. The writing and story is beyond gorgeous.
Great review!
Aw, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this more, Jenni. I've been hearing many mixed to positive reviews for this one, so I don't really know what to think anymore. I find it hard to connect to the characters in third person narrative as well, so I understand your frustration there. The romance sounds promising, too, so it's disappointing the the book kept "stepping away from [it]," as you put it.
ReplyDeleteMeh. I've heard great things about her other book, though!
Great, honest review, Jenni. :)
I think a lot of early readers had a similar reaction to this book as you did, Jenni. It's really too bad that the book starts to drift away from the romance because I would definitely expect this book to be entirely romance. I agree about 3rd person. I have such a hard time with 3rd person writing too, but currently I'm reading Clockwork Angel, which is in the 3rd person and it's amazing! I'm loving it. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the 3rd person in this one.
ReplyDeleteThe romance does seem very sweet. I was going to buy a copy, but I might as well wait for my library to get a copy.
Lovely review, Jenni!
Aw, sorry you quit caring along the way. :( That usually happens to me, too, when the book changes direction too much.
ReplyDeleteJenni I had a lot of the same issues that you mentioned too, I was quite disappointed, as I went into this story with really high hopes, but like you was only able to rate this book 3.5 stars. I too really enjoyed the initial emails back and forth and the beginning, but once Graham and Ellie got together, things kind of fizzled out for me :( this is a lovely review Jenni, I think you've captured how I felt about this book perfectly! I hope you enjoy The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight a lot more! :)
ReplyDeleteI could have done with out the father side story as well Jenni, but other than that, I really enjoyed this one! It's not one of those books that blew me away, but I had fun reading it, and after a couple of books that were a challenge to get through, I found that smiling all the way through this one was refreshing. Glad you enjoyed it for the most part though!
ReplyDeleteYour reaction reminds me a little of my own when I first read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by this author. I liked it overall, though I couldn't quite pinpoint what it was that prevented me from fully loving it. I'm glad this started off well for you. It definitely sounds like a cute read and it's great to hear that the third person narrative was handled well. Third person can go either way for me, though I have started to appreciate it more in the last couple of years. Brilliant review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteJenni, a lot of reviewers experienced the same issues with the perspective and the plot as it moved away from the romance. Despite issues I am glad you found it fun. Lovely review
ReplyDeleteUgh!! 3rd person perspective!! I am not a fan of that at all and unfortunately I have been reading a lot of books written in that perspective lately too. It just makes it so hard for me to connect. This sounds like a sweet and cute book that I think I would like, but I don't think I would love it. It's too bad that the romance wasn't as great as it could have been. I really loved TSPoLaFS, the writing was beautiful and it sounds like this is written beautiful as well, just the story not executed quite as well. I have head a lot of people had mixed feelings about this one. Awesome review babe!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that this one pulled off third person so well! Guess I'll have to give it a go!
ReplyDeleteIt's disappointing to read this wasn't a big hit because I've been looking forward to this novel. My co-blogger, Jasprit felt the same way (I see her comment above, plus she told me) so it's not a huge surprise. Darn it! It sounds like you enjoyed it overall though, Jenni. I'll keep in mind that I may not be happy with the add if the fathers story in this. I felt the same way about Statistical Probability, the story with the father disappointed me so. Wonderful review. :)
ReplyDeleteSee, I like having those books where things seem easy because it DOES happen. Sometimes it's nice to have a book that doesn't have super-important issues in it. I think this book filled that nicely.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad you didn't like it more!
Oh I read half of this review before realizing I'd read it already probably on Goodreads. I thought it was a super fun and cute read--although very implausible but still. Too bad you stopped giving a shit after a bit lol. Happens I guess >.< I think you'd like Statistical Probability. I liked it a bit more than this one but it has the same lighthearted feel to it!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually not really fond of third person narratives either and it so rarely works for me, so I'm glad Smith is an exception. Family issues subplot was what ruined The Statistical Probability for me, so I'm not surprised that it didn't work here either. In some ways, Smith is an excellent author, but she should definitely stick to contemporary romance alone.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
Too bad this one didn't stay awesome for you!
ReplyDeleteBased on the book summary, I'd assume the story is just about a sweet romance... thank you for pointing out that Ellie has her own family issue and the weight of the issue seems a little much. Loved your honesty, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everything you said in this review! At the start, when the emails were going back and forth, I just kept thinking to myself "awww, this has got to be the cutest book I have read in a VERY long time!" But eventually, after they met and all of the paparazzi stuff got involved, I just stopped caring. I also started to feel disconnected to the book when Ellie went searching for her father. And the actual 'meet' was an anti-climax. I was sitting there like "Urm, that's it??"
ReplyDeleteI also thought Graham was very cute, and felt so sorry for him when his parents didn't want to visit him anymore. Like you, I also would have liked Quinn and Ellie to have resolved their issues sooner on in the novel, so we could see a stronger side to their relationship.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review with us, Jenni. I love your review style :)
I thought this was going to be a cute romance, but apparently it really isn't. That kinda sucks. Don't know about it so much now. I'll probably check my library for it. Great review.
ReplyDeleteJenea @ Books Live Forever
I recently got Smith's other book -- and I haven't read it yet -- but there's an excerpt in the back for this book and I did start to read that randomly. I wished I had the book by the end of it. If I like her first, I'll probably pick up this book too. I'm always on the hunt for a good third person POV YA book. I can only think of two people that do it well of the top of my head: Laini Taylor and Ilsa J. Bick (but only in Ashes, her second one lost me). Great review!
ReplyDeleteYour mention of 3rd person made me laugh because I have a review going up this week where I mention that it took me about 180 pages before I realised a book was written in 3rd p and I was enjoying it! I totally understand your surprise.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this just to see if I feel the same as every other reader, there really has to be something odd if everyone feels this book gets worse after the beginning!
Sorry you didn't completely enjoy this once. It's currently sitting on my tbr, and I'm although I'm looking forward to it I think I'll keep my expectations under guard now. Great review!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to read your point of view because you make similar notes in your review as I did in mine, but have different opinions about them than I did. For example, I really liked seeing the father side story and learning about their family issues, but I can appreciate that that's not the book you were looking for. I certainly agree that it was an absolutely charming book. It didn't leave a huge impact on me, but that's okay. I'm looking forward to reading The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight at some point, as well! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jenni - I really enjoyed reading your review!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, about wanting more of the romance between Graham and Ellie. I actually liked Graham's story a lot more than Ellie's. I did still like this book, though. And that there is a girl names Quinn because that's my name :)
ReplyDeleteI so want to read this book, despite the one issue you had, it still sounds so cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those people who just LOVE 3rd person POV - when it's done right, I just feel that omnipresent feel can show more sometimes than the MC would think or feel. As you know, I'm in a contemporary rut, but this one is still on my reading list. The things you liked about this one give me the impression that the positive would outweigh any minor irritations I might have. Sometimes a light read is just what you need, but other times it just doesn't cut it. Sorry you didn't LOVE this one more, but glad you enjoyed it overall. I really enjoyed reading your review, thanks for the insight!
