Casper Whitley is forced to move to Charleston, South Carolina where she’ll be the new kid her senior year of high school. Casper’s upset about the move until she meets the Roman family’s gorgeous son, Cal, but there’s a problem. A mystery surrounds him which can be summed up in one word…Kythera. Never heard of it? Neither has Casper until she finds the word tattooed on cars, paintings and all her new friends.

After Casper’s life is threatened, someone is forced to tell the truth about her parents, the Romans and Kythera’s motives for her being in Charleston. Once the truth is revealed, she must decide whether to protect her family and Kythera’s secrets or walk away from everything she has ever known.
I have to be honest and say that what sold me on THE KINGS OF CHARLESTON was the cover. I liked how, for a YA novel, it exuded a bit of sexiness that you don't normally see. It's pretty simple and yeah, it just worked for me. What didn't work was what was inside. A long drawn out story about a high society of complete riff raff that I cared nothing about.

My hatred for this novel has to be started with the MC Casper (I know right? We have the friendly freakin' ghost here.) This girl was such a paradox of herself. Her inner dialogue spoke of a girl who had her head on her shoulders and knew that she needed to put herself first and not fall all over some guy that she doesn't even know. But then she meets Cal. To be honest, I didn't even really find him all that charming, he was a bit too forceful and creepy for my taste. But all along Casper knows that Cal is hiding something HUGE from her and yet she still falls head over heels for the guy and starts dropping love bombs after a week or so. Not only does she know the entire time that Cal is blatantly lying to her (or withholding may be a better word) but she also almost gets murdered and then agrees to lie to the police for this guy! I'm sorry, she had been on the hunt the entire novel to find out the secret behind these Kythera people and then almost gets murdered because of the group and then lies to the police for them! Hell to the no! Give your head a shake girl.

Another huge turn off for me with this novel was Casper's parents. They were high society Richie Rich people and through the entire novel they are putting their need for money and a lavish lifestyle in front of their child's well-being. They make her move across the country the summer before she starts her senior year, which isn't the end of the world or anything but what comes next is. After Casper is almost murdered in a heist against the Kythera they decide to stay in Charleston and make her join the Kythera because otherwise they will be poor! They make her join this group who brands the members and has murderers after them! Loving parents if I've ever seen them!

There were also quite a few technical parts of the story that irritated me as well. In the ePub that I read rather than italicizing words that were supposed to be emphasized by the speaker they were underlined and that felt really juvenile to me (entirely personal preference, I know.) Also the pacing was just all over the place. At one point, I kid you not, I took a nap. When Callie goes to take a bath we get every minute detail from her taking off her clothes, turning on the water, feeling the water to get it to the right temperature, turning the water off, getting in the tub, soaking, getting out of the tub, almost slipping, wishing she had cushy blue bath mats... you get the picture. There were some adrenaline infused moments but they came much too late in the story to really grab me, I had already pretty much checked out.

I had so many problems with this story that the reading experience was far from enjoyable. The thing that kept me going for most of it was finding out who these Kythera people were and then by the time I got to find out I was so far gone that I didn't really care anymore. I think they might have been rich snobs? Who can get anyone they want? And they have lots of money. Yeah, money. I can't recommend this one to anyone, which makes me sad because I wanted this to be a mob type story that stood out in YA. It failed at that. Badly.

  1. I remember seeing this book and the cover intrigued me like it did for you, but the synopsis didn't. I'm really glad that I didn't end up adding this to my TBR pile because everything about this book sounds awful! I'm sorry you had to go through such a bad reading experience. The main character Casper seems like an absolute idiot!! And the love interest doesn't sound much better. And yikes, falling asleep during the book? That's never a good sign. I won't be picking this book up, that's for sure! Thanks for the brutally honest review, it was very fun to read :) great review, Jenni!

  2. Ouch! I love that cover, too, but the synopsis doesn't intrigue me at all. Sorry this wasn't a good experience for you.

  3. I agree that the cover has something very intriguing about it. I guess it's one of those books with an interesting cover but the content isn't so great.
There are just too many books like that now.
The main character sounds like a piece of work. I definitely don't want to meet her. I thought we were over the insta-love phase. And creepy love interest? Ugghh no!
And why are authors constantly making parents either the worst people on earth or they are never there? Seriously, not all real life parents are that sucky!
I'm sorry this didn't work for you, Jenny.
    Great honest review! :)

  4. I would never have guessed that this was a YA novel based on that cover! The book description doesn't really appeal to me, and your review only makes me want to avoid it all the more. I seriously can't stand it when main characters change as soon as the love interest in introduced. Even worse when they are quick to assume that they are in love. (They very well might be, but I'd rather not about it until the pacing feels right!) Sorry that this only disappointed you, Jenni, but thanks for the honest review. :)

  5. Ughhh insta-love, girl sticking with a lying jerk, over descriptiveness... I don't know if I would like this much. I am still going to keep entering the giveaway in hopes I win the kindle though lol!! Great honest review chick!

  6. I wouldn't have guessed this was YA from that cover Jenni! I really like it though, just like you said - it's sexy. Too bad that is the best thing about this book. The insta-love and the lying would drive me crazy, especially given she's known Cal so short a time before she starts lying. I think I'll pass on this one, but as always, I loved reading your thoughts on it!

  7. Jenni, your review cracked me up! "the MC Casper (I know right? We have the friendly freakin' ghost here.)" - LOL! On a more serious note, though, this book sounds like one of those girl-meets-guy-and-turns-dumb novels. I mean, if done right, maybe it wouldn't be so annoying, but I can see why you disliked this book so much. I think I would, too. :/ A shame, since it sounded really intriguing.

I'm sorry this wasn't as great as it sounded. Thanks for the heads-up, though, and fantastic review!

  8. Well then. Let's face it. This sounds positively dreadful. The inconsistent MC, the horrible parents, instalove... it's best that I stop there. To be honest, the cover almost had me too, but I now officially know better.
Thanks for saving my life, Jenni!

  9. Before I comment on your review, I'd like to tell you that I received my paperback of Julie Kagawa's The Immortal Rules with the new cover and I was SOOOOOOOOO against it before, but now? It's actually quite pretty O_O Seriously? It looks good. Black and gold go well together.

Anyway, your review is hilarious, but kind of sad, too. I'm upset that you didn't like this book. I hadn't heard of it before you did a book blitz ans giveaway post on it, but since then I was really looking forward to it. The excerpt you shared was good. The main character does not appeal to me and insta-love.. I am so tired of this. Why, God, why? It's so over and done with. Ehhhhh.. I don't know what to think. Perhaps it's not my cup of tea..

  10. Hmm, this one sounds bad! Casper sounds like a dummy! The cover does look very sexy for YA.

  11. ok, if you read my caffeinated confessions post the other Saturday about genres..you would know why your review had me giggling so hard I had tears. totally had an 80's flashback. Wonderful review Jenni and I totally understand what didn't work for you. I must say the cover is amazing.

  12. Wow, 1 star!? I’m surprised you bothered finishing this book. I’m so sick of the rich snobby parents who only care about money. I’d rather they go with the parents were killed in a car accident route. Or, better yet, why not make them normal parents?! Shocking concept.
Sorry you had to read a book you hated so much to only give 1 star :(

  13. This is YA? Really? Guess I can't really judge a book by its cover. Sounds like Casper is blindly in love and I can see why this doesn't sit well with you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  14. I liked the cover too, but this is kind of the reason why I don't read self-pubbed books unless they come highly recommended by a few people. I have total respect for self-pubbed authors, it takes a lot to write something and then have the courage to publish it, but ... there's something to say about having a lit agent and editor go over a manuscript before letting it out into the world. It doesn't always work -- there's still some traditional pubbed books that have technical issues or pacing problems -- but it works enough.

I'm glad I read this review. I was considering reading it, but I can't stand insta-love and girls doing illogical things for guys.

  15. Awe, it has such a fantastic cover, even though I didn't really think it was a YA book. I'm not much for the overly forceful guy and the girls that stick with them. Thanks for the honest review, I'll just stay away from this one. :D

  16. When I first saw the cover, I liked the cover too, but the synopsis didn't intrigue me, I'm so glad that I didn't read this, so sorry that you had such a bad experience with it. So far I've never read a book that rated below 2 stars, either I'm too generous or after reading so many reviews, I know which books to stay away from.

I'm getting really tired and irritated from so many books that have an idiot m.c, too forceful love interest, the insta-love, and the not caring or not there parents. There's even insta-love and the useless parents in most of the adult books I read as well. I feel bad for real life parents because authors make them look like shit. It's because of books like this that my thinks that most non-Muslim parents are bad parents. I know that she's being too judgemental and kind of racist, but can you blame her? At least there are some tv shows that show good parenting: like Hannah's mom, and Emily and Spencer's parents in PLL. Still, if authors show realistic parents then my parents wouldn't be so judgemental, actually my parents don't read books written in English, because she finds some them with characters too immature and stuff. She knows those stories almost as if she's read them is because when I hate the m.c and his or her parents, I need someone to rant to, even they're only pretending to listen, and my mom's the only one in my family who won't interrupt me when I'm irritated with fictional characters, whereas my sisters would just be like "shut up, we don't care."
Sorry that my comment got a bit off topic, I just wanted to say how wonderful some real parents are, I mean I don't think I would be able to just listen to something my kid is ranting about, then again I'm not a mom, so I wouldn't understand.

There are very few books that have caring parents that are not divorced in them. I like bad boys, but someone like Cal, I don't think so. Personally, no fictional guy is better than Daemon from the Lux series, I'm going to go before start fangirling, which is even worse than my ranting.

I'm so glad that I read your review, now I can put this book in my mental list of books I will never ever read.

  17. I would've never thought that cover was for a YA novel. The main characters actions sound very frustrating as do the parents. Doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy either, Jenni. Thanks for the helpful review, I think I'll pass on this one. :)

  18. Oh man, another one star! This should be fun.

    Casper's a girl? Really?

    "dropping love bombs" Bahahaha

Ummm, wow. I want not part of this book. Ever. It sounds like all the worst things, also Kythera wtf.

  19. Oh man, I think this book would drive me batty. I know you don't give many 1 star reviews, so....no. Just no.

  20. I was intrigued by the society, the mystery, and gave it a three star, although it really should have been a 2.5. I will read the sequel because I do want to see what happens with Casper and Cal.

All of your thoughts definitely make sense about this book. I think you nailed it perfectly.

  21. I remembered you featuring this one & was curious to see how you made out with it...the cover kind of felt 'just right' to me too; simple but sexy and a bit dangerous. But ouch, that bad eh?! Well that sucks. The comments you made about everything made me laugh (and not just cause I could almost hear you saying them) and shake my head cause really this sounds like it might have been a DNF for me. Cheers to you for seeing it though and thanks for the awesome review, but I'll be passing on this one o.O
