This week us Book Girls have decided to talk about covers and how they affect our outlook on a book. I think it's pretty much known by all of my readers that I am a big cover whore, the cover is the first thing readers see of a book so there is a lot of weight behind it. I'll admit that I have written books off as ones that I will never read strictly based on the cover, it may be incredibly shallow but that's just the way I am. I think that publishers definitely realize just how important a cover is and I think that is shown in the amount of cover changes that have been going around lately. So first here are some covers that I think are absolutely gorgeous:

These are four gorgeous covers, they all stand out in their own way. I love the vibrant colors of Crewel and in person it is so shiny and beautiful. I have actually heard from a few sources that a lot of people don't realize at first that there is a face on it which surprises me, but that shows that it's a cover you can look at again and again and notice new things about. Ten Tiny Breaths was one that I thought was stunning from the moment that I saw the cover reveal. I am so sad that when it got picked up by Atria books they changed the cover, I think this is a rare instance where the indie cover far surpasses the pubbed on. MILA 2.0 is so gorgeous and I think that is one that pretty much everyone loves so I don't think I even need to extrapolate on that one. Finally, when it comes to Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea I love how it shows how stunning text can be. I am actually a pretty big fan of covers that feature the title of the book predominantly but this one has the great backdrop to go with it so it's awesome!

White is the new red! I remember when I used to go to the book store and peruse the books (and for me perusing the books at the bookstore means standing back and looking down the shelves in rows until a cover pops out at me) the ones that I always gravitated towards, that sucked me in were ones that had some red that would just POP! out at me. Now that seems to be everywhere which is sad because it isn't as eye catching or unique anymore. But what really stands out to me now are all these fantastic white covers. In the dark and dreary world of YA bookshelves, black and red definitely dominate so when you come across one that is mostly white it definitely catches your eye. I love how Room also has the pop of colors on it and I think that cover does such a great job of showcasing what is in the book. A lot can be said with a simple white slate and some font.

This wouldn't be a post about covers if I didn't talk about some bad ones. So after a quick Goodreads search I bring you these. That first one, I just can't even... Who thought that was a good idea? At first glance I thought that I liked the cover for In The Woods and was going to include with in the white covers section but the more I looked at it the more it bothered my eyes. There's just too much going on and it's a show of how a title featuring a font can go wrong. I remember really loving Speak when I read it but what is happening on that cover? I am not a fan of sparse trees growing on faces. Finally, I don't even want to know what that is on the cover of Solid, it looks like it should be brown... but is purple..ewww
So these are just some examples of what I think makes a good cover (and some laughable ones that are huge no no's) but I want to know what you think makes a good cover? What makes you pick up a book at the book store? Will a cover ever prevent you from reading a book? Let me know!
I like the cover of Crewel and I have never noticed the face until now! I haven't seen it in person, so that might be why?
ReplyDeleteI like white covers, espesh when there is a pop of bright colour on the front, I always gravitate towards those.
And the last 4 are pretty average, I think the final one is showing chromosomes, but I'm not sure why they're purple!
Cover whores, unite! We need a banner or something. : )
ReplyDeleteI was definitely in the group that didn't at first realize there was a face on the Crewel cover but when I found it, I almost wished I could UNsee it to experience that again. Very cool. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is one of my favorite covers for 2013.
I like the stark white covers, too and the ones that rely on simplicity. And in a sea of covers with girl in cool dresses being showcased, they definitely stand out.
The last four are mediocre - I've seen some HORRIBLE ones that make me wonder what on earth people were thinking. Like that first one... I mean... what?!
Great topic! You all should do one where you compare good books in bad covers to bad books in good covers. : )
Yep Vegan YA Nerds are right, it's an X chromosome on that last cover. I'm not sure what it symbolizes in the story, but nothing that scientific allures me to pick a book up. I'm sorry, but I had enough gene technology last semester and I don't think I'm up for it now that I'm taking biochemistry. Yeah.. I think it's targeted to a specific group of people, but basing on that cover, I'm sure I won't be exploring this book. Shallow me, hallelujah!
ReplyDeleteJust as you, I loved the original TTB cover. Why the fuck did they have to change it? I'm sorry.. It's just unreal. They kept S.C. Stephens' horrible ones for Thoughtless series and they changed a perfect one. I won't be purchasing the paperback when they release TTB and I won't be purchasing the Thoughtless series with those ugly US covers in paperback either. I don't know. I feel like the original TTB cover attracts more people to read it than the new one which is just not my taste at all. Maybe it's just me though.. -.-
Some of the covers I like are: TFiOS, The Infernal Devices' ones, Josephine Angelini's Starcrossed series. Umm.. Ooh, I like Altered by Jennifer Rush. I think this one has a cover that stands out. Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. I usually love all of Maggie Stiefvater's covers as well, especially The Raven Boys and Shiver. The original Across the Universe covers. Umm.. What else? I really like Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey series' covers. Yes, Meghan/Ash alone would be so ordinary, but the ornaments and different design effects make it completely unique. Brodi Ashton has great covers. I think it really depends on how much an indie author is willing to pay or put their vision into making their covers stand out and same goes to publishers.
The most cliché is when you put a girl in a dress or a couple on the cover. Not everyone can do the Soul Screamers' covers and it's actually a pretty big turn off for me. I like when it tells a story of its own and is related to the story, but at the same time, if you can't manage that, then a typography cover is a way better option and you can even turn to Giselle or Jenny or people who know how to design things and I'm sure they'd love to help an author out if they have a certain vision etc. + The bloggers who make designs, are usually very good at this. E.g. Jenny just made some stuff for Kaidan Rowe and his band and Wendy Higgins posted these teaser posters on her blog and they look awesome! It's all about research and I'm sorry, but if a cover is a complete fail and even if the story sounds awesome, I will most likely not pick it up. Love your discussion, babe!
Great post hon!! I think that most of us are cover whores and definitely judge books by the covers. For example, I had no desire to read The Hunger Games because the cover did nothing for me. It wasn't until I started hearing how awesome it was that I picked it up. At that point all of the books were out. Then there are books like Mind Games and Level 2 that have awesome covers, but you want to chuck the book out the window.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a cover whore! I will only read a book that I think has an ugly cover if reviewers have enjoyed the book very much. I love the cover for Speechless. I love white covers. They really pop out!
ReplyDeleteHaha! That cover for Diamond Star is TERRIBLE! It's actually pretty funny.
That last cover actually is a chromosome and that's actually what a chromosome looks like. I hate the font on the cover though!
Great post, Jenni!
Another awesome post Jenni! I think most of us have that shallow streak to some degree when it comes to books. Gravitating towards pretty things! I will read books with horrible covers if they come highly recommended though but it sucks cause even if you like it despite the cover you just know tons of other people will pass on it just because of the lack of pretty >.<
ReplyDeleteEvery single one of the first 4 covers you posted are stunning. The colours in Crewel are so attractive, and yellow is really underused in covers...I think it makes this one pop even more. Ten Tiny Breaths might be my favorite! The girl is super pretty and her red hair with the blue of the water? I just LOVE it! MILA 2.0 is definitely another favorite. So is Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea but then again I love water on covers & the ocean splashing against the rocks on that one is hard to resist :)
I like White Covers too though, I especially remember your White Twilight boxed set ♥
Great discussion, love! :-) I like all of the covers you picked out, which doesn't surprise me. I am embarrassed to say that I'm one of the ones who didn't realize for quite some time that Crewel has a face on the cover! >.<
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Ten Tiny Breaths (boo to the publisher changing the cover!) and Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Can't wait to get my grubbies on this one!
I am definitely a cover whore myself and will often buy books solely based on the cover, even if (confession time) I already know they'll only be a so-so read >.<
I have to agree with you! I LOVE a good cover! I still get chills every time I look at the Splintered cover! I just think it's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteAnd those bad covers that you came up with, what were they all thinking? I kinda do like the "In The Woods" one though. It's pretty in person, but the other ones are totally laughable.
Here's a tragic fact: I'm far more likely to buy a book based on the cover than based on anythign else, including the synopsis. A combination of a good cover AND a good review or two is sure to convince me to buy. So yeah, I'm shallow, a cover whore if you will :D Aren't we all?
ReplyDeleteI love ALL the covers done by that spanish artist, Nekro, like The Space Betwen by Brenna Yovanoff, Anna Dressed in Blood and the UF series (House of Comarre). He does excellent work and I always read AND own those books on paper.
I used to grab any book that has a gorgeous cover :P And I have to agree... white is the new red! Have an awesome day, Jenni :)
ReplyDeleteThere really are no words for Diamond Star are there? *shakes head* It kind of makes me happy in a it's-so-bad-it's-awesome kind of way though. Completely agree with you on type - as much as a gorgeous image can make or break a cover, the font choice can do the same thing. I'm a complete font whore, so I love when the title is the focal point of a cover!
ReplyDeleteI am a sucker for a great cover. I try not to let that be the defining factor in choosing a book, but it always does help. There are some truly weird/ugly covers out there. I just don't get how someone can be that far off the mark!
ReplyDeleteFun topic, Jenni. Everyone has something to say about this.
I am a Cover Whore, I know this about myself. The cover reals me in as my inner whore bounces and squees with delight at the cover that catches its eye. Then the synopsis reels me the rest of the way in..so I know exactly what you mean about the Red..i was in heaven and this new white, grey ..yuck. Bad covers can make me not even look at a book, and sometimes I really wonder. I just spoke to a published author today, whose cover I admitted not liking and she hates it too, but the publisher and team out voted her..UGH! Then don't even get me started on US vs. UK covers..did you see there Smoke and Bone cover..eep! Awesome topic, ya nailed it Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI love the cover for Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea... the words and that font just come alive. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI actually liked the Speak cover at first glance but after giving it a little more time, I decided it's not for me. Are those lips?!?
I am so picky about covers, I’m even picky about cover sizes! I hate when they are too skinny or too thin. The disco one looks like a Wii video game! I have so many pretty covers that I love but my absolute favorite is Clockwork Princess. I haven’t even read any of the books but the girl! The Dress! The background! The BOOK! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBTW-I tried to buy Pink tickets again this weekend and they sold out so fast :(
I’m so jealous you’re going to see her…
I judge...a fabulous book with a fabulous cover is the best package ever!
ReplyDeleteThere have been books that sounded cool but had icky covers, so I've passed. Then there have been books that didn't sound so great but had fabulous covers. I've been there and everywhere in between.
I wish I could think of something off the top of my head, but I'm drawing a blank on bad covers/good books or good covers/bad books.
God, the last one is a chromosome, I don't even want to know why it's on there LOL. I DO judge a book by it's cover when I purchase them... It's kind of hard not to. It's the first thing that you notice when picking up a book!
ReplyDeleteI love pretty covers, but it's usually the synopsis that gets me going. I can't stand a pretty cover with a crappy synopsis.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I love how you pointed out those white covers. Truly, they do stand out in the mass of eye-popping colours, and have this air of intrigue around them.
And as an extra, I think the purple thing on the cover of Solid is supposed to be something like an X chromosome, and not . . . something brown. Maybe it has something to do with genetic mutations or something biology-related?
As for the cover on Solid, it's a chromosome. I agree that it's not the best cover, but I actually enjoyed the book quite a bit. Just goes to show, don't judge a book by its cover! Although, I might have to judge that Diamond Star one by its cover...I just...can't fathom how that could be considered a good cover.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those people that didn't realize Crewel had a face on it till months later lol. When I did see it I was so amazed haha. I don't really like the white covers for some reason. But I agree there's too much red and black (thanks a lot twilight lol). Those last few covers are just...well they made me lol a little!
ReplyDeleteI'm with on this one. Those four you pointed out -- particularly Ten Tiny Breaths -- I bought them pretty much because of the over beauty. When I'm walking around a bookstore, I will pick up a book purely because of the cover. If it doesn't appeal to me I won't. I know that probably isn't a great idea. A books about the writing and most authors don't get a say in the cover at all -- particularly the debut writers. But ... yeah, I still do it. If I hear a lot of great reviews about a book I'll still get it.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, they're changing the covers for the Crewel series! How sad, right? They haven't released the new designs yet. Albin has no control of it. It's the publisher's idea. I'm sure it'll still be really interesting.
OK, whatever that thing is on the Solid cover... it doesn't look solid at all. :O I love the cover on Between The Devil and the Deep Blue.
ReplyDeleteThe first eight covers are GORGEOUS. I agree that you find new things about Crewel's cover every time you look at it - at first I wasn't sure what to make of it either, but now that I've read the book, I can see the connection. I think a pretty cover is always one that doesn't have weird fonts or weird models or clashing colors - like Diamond Star. I hate being so frank, but that cover is hideous. Too many items on a cover does NOT make it look complex or professional. Not all simple covers are THAT pretty either (Speechless is an exception!). I usually don't mind girls-in-dresses on covers, just as long as they tie in the story in some way. Otherwise... Geez. The whole point of covers is not only to attract attention, but to show what makes the book desirable.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Jenni! There are some horrid covers out there which I won't point out, but let's just be happy with the pretty covers we have now, ahahah.
I love a good cover ... DEFINITELY a big selling point for me when it comes to choosing my books. And more times than not, a bad cover can really deter me from reading a book. I need eyecatching, gorgeous colours, a unique font ... NOT just a girl on the cover in a dress. Blah.
ReplyDeleteLove the cover for Crewel! And definitely Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. So pretty!
Oh I read this, and I realized I never commented, so here I am! :D
ReplyDeleteCovers do make a difference for me I believe that saying DoN't judge a book by its cover was invented to make crappy cover authors feel better TBH lol. I mean, it's the first impression of the quality of a book and it should sort of reflect the inside. Especially talking self pub, if an author doesn't want to bother hiring a great designer, what are the chances that the book quality will be better? I also agree about that In the Woods book, it's just weird and it looks messy to me. I do like the white covers, though. Some of them are really shiny too like the Teeth cover (though that's more silver). The change to Ten Tiny Breaths makes no sense, this cover is a million times better than the other which looks like EVERY other "under the water" cover to me. *sigh*
I love the white movement. Speechless has a beautiful cover - I am so happy that the cover matches the awesome story.
