"Bono met his wife in high school," Park says.
"So did Jerry Lee Lewis," Eleanor answers.
"I’m not kidding," he says.
"You should be," she says, "we’re sixteen."
"What about Romeo and Juliet?"
"Shallow, confused, then dead."
''I love you," Park says.
"Wherefore art thou," Eleanor answers.
"I’m not kidding," he says.
"You should be."

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, ELEANOR AND PARK is the story of two star-crossed misfits – smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love – and just how hard it pulled you under.
This is a novel that I went into with incredibly high expectations. So many of my Goodreads friends and people that I talk to on Twitter have been raving about this book the last few weeks. I was honestly a little nervous that my expectations would get the better of me because I really didn’t think there was any way a book could live up to them. This book surpassed those expectations, it blew them away, it left them in the dust, it was perfect. I have no idea what I could bring to the ELEANOR & PARK fanclub that is new so I am going to keep this short and talk about my favorite things in the novel.

The real gem of this book is the portrayal of the main characters Eleanor & Park. They are incredibly flawed in their own ways and live completely different lives and yet through some shared interests they begin to slowly (very slowly) open up to one another. There was an innocence to their relationship and a sense of wonderment as they explored their emotions for one another. I loved that even after they fell for one another their worlds didn’t stop and focus solely on their love for each other. They were still incredibly self conscious and even pretty damn selfish at times. Eleanor had a lot to deal with, not only did she have to put up with bullshit at school but she had to put up with just as much (if not more) of it at home. I felt for this girl so much you guys. I hated her stepdad, I hated her mother for being so weak and I hated the bullies at her school. But through those things I came to really admire Eleanor, she was herself through and through. She didn’t parade around trying to be something that she wasn’t to make those crappy things in her life go away, she faced them. Park leads a much different life, he comes from a stable family with two parents who are madly in love with one another. I thought he was so adorable. He had this dark rebellious side to him that wasn’t really brought out until he had Eleanor and he realized that some things are worth fighting for.

Their relationship is exactly the polar opposite of insta-love (how refreshing, right?) This is definitely a slow burn romance, the slowest I have ever read and I loved every small step that these two took with one another. As I had mentioned there was an innocence to it as it was new to both of them and they didn’t know what they were doing at all. Most of the romantic scenes were actually pretty awkward which is perfect because at that age they are awkward! Where do you put your hands? How much is too much? You can never be sure. What made these scenes, and everything in the novel really shine was the dual POV. There were random switches between Eleanor and Park's POV some spanned a few pages and some mere sentences but they were perfectly placed to really give you both sides of the story.

I don’t think I would have picked this book up based on the cover, actually I know I wouldn’t have because at one point I did get a review request for this one that I turned down. What a fool I am! Now when I look at the cover there is absolutely nothing that I would change because it is so perfect for the novel. Filled with real life turmoil, a relationship that will warm your heart (seriously I thought at one point that my heart might actually burst) and a general honesty about life that is hard to find, ELEANOR & PARK is a story that you don’t want to miss.

  1. I'm glad you loved this book!! I bought it a few days ago and I really can't wait to start it.
I really love romantic stories that develop slowly, without insta-love.. Eleanor sounds like a character I would love to meet, or at least to read about.
    Great review!!

  2. I really want to read this book, but I'm so worried that it will disappoint me because of the raving reviews. But you've given me so hope that I will enjoy it. I love the sound of the romance. I like that there is no instant-love. I can't wait to meet these lovely characters.
    Lovely review, Jenni!

  4. Slow-burning romances are my favourite kind. I'd rather have no romance or barely-there romances, than helpings of insta-love. Really glad you liked this one, Jenni! I've been worried about reading it for the reasons you mentioned. I've heard nothing but good things though I've convinced myself that it won't meet my high expectations. I guess I'll never know if I don't try it! Thanks for the great review.

  6. Gah!! "Love" doesn't even explain my emotion for this book. I reviewed it last week as well, after seeing it around so much lately. I chose to get the audio, and I just adored the dual narration. It was perfect. I instantly fell in love with the characters. And how about the eye liner scene, huh? Too sweet... it literally brought tears to my eyes. The ending made me flip... I was in denial when the audio just stopped. I was sure there had to be more. But oh, how I just was infatuated with this book. So happy to hear you loved it too!! Great review! :)

  9. The polar opposite of insta-love? SOLD! That's all I really need to know about this book really:) I was nervous to pick this one up for the same reason Jenni, I've read so many glowing reviews that I worry I'll be the one person that's all "I don't get what the fuss is all about." I don't think that will happen though, I love flawed characters and I love a relationship where both parties retain an independence once the romance starts. Must read this! Gorgeous review:)

  10. The cover is kind of off-putting for me too, but all these amazing reviews made me buy a copy anyway. I'm really excited about it. I love a slow-burning romance more than anything else, and I'm curious to see how the dual POV was handled, especially when it worked so well for you.
Thanks for the lovely review, Jenni!

  12. This slow burning romance somewhat reminds me of Josh and Nastja from The Sa of Tranquility. I was so ready for them to start something from the very first page, but it was baby steps only. I also think that it's the best kind of love when people don't forget themselves and their goals, passions, nature when they fall in love. Passionat love is all I'm about, but at the same time one needs to be one's own person. Balancing independence and co-operation is the key to survival in a relationship. I'm not impressed by the cover either, but it's somewhat cute. I'd love to read this book one day:-) Thanks so much for sharing, Jenni!

  16. I can't wait to read this book, I've been hearing so many amazing things about it. One more positive review to add to my list of reasons to do it soon. I love this cover, but I wasn't that excited about the blurb when I first read it. Great review!

  17. Man, all these 5 star reviews are a lot of pressure! I am reading this soon so I just skipped down to see your rating, Jenni, but I'm looking forward to it even more now that I know it has your stamp of approval. ;) Let's see if you and Tonya are right....

  18. Super review, Jenni! I don't often take a break from my sci-fi, fantasy and paranormals, but I love that there isn't insta-love and it seems like quite the character study too. I'll have to pick it up :)

  20. It's amazing how fantastic this book is. Even after all the hype it's received, and how high readers' expectations are, this book still shines and doens't disappoint.

I think one of my favorite parts was when Eleanor and Park held hands for the first time. It mean, it's such a simple thing, but somehow it felt incredibly intimate.

So glad you loved this one!

  21. I'm so glad to hear that you loved this! I absolutely adored the book, and I agree, this romance is the polar opposite of instalove. It was just so genuine and realistic. I felt so much for both Park and Eleanor, and oh my gosh, my heart was in my throat when Eleanor was at home. This book gave me so many feelings! Beautiful review! :-)

  22. Lovely review! Seeing so many positive reviews of this book has also made me a bit skeptical. But as I continue to read more and more, I can't help but wonder what exactly is driving so many readers to love this one book. It's something I will have to experience for myself, that's for sure. The subject matter, focusing on the day to day lives of teens in the 80s doesn't really draw me in, but it sounds as if there are enough other aspects to really appreciate this work.

  23. I probably wouldn't have picked up this book had I not saw a recommendation from John Green about it ... it turned out to be very good! :)

  24. I have this one and I keep putting off reading it because of all of the rave reviews that I have read of it. I always worry that I am not going to love a book that it literally seems like everyone loved. I am definitely going to give in and read it soon because I can't keep reading all these amazing reviews without finding out for myself. I am also really excited to read her new book Fangirl it looks completely adorable but, I want to find out if I enjoy this one first. Great review!
