There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends…and he’s gone.
They call it the Heist.
Gray Weathersby’s eighteenth birthday is mere months away, and he’s prepared to meet his fate–until he finds a strange note from his mother and starts to question everything he’s been raised to accept: the Council leaders and their obvious secrets. The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.
Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?
I’ll start with Gray. What a terrible person this guy was. He was so impulsive & full of rage and I hated him from chapter one (in which he punches a girl in the face and stomach.) His brother is getting heisted and even at the goodbye ceremony he has all of these jealous thoughts that made me so angry. You are about to lose your brother forever, let your shit go and give him a proper farewell you ass! I can see where his rage was supposed to have come from, he was living in his perfect brother’s shadow his whole life and found out he was lied to by both his brother and his mother but it was much too over the top for me. I also didn’t see much growth in his character, even at the end of the novel he is super jealous and does stupid things to get revenge on people he is supposed to love.
Speaking of love, there is a love triangle here you guys, and it’s a doozy. Here is my favorite quote: “The best I do is nod in and out of consciousness, my arms always hugging Bree, but my eyes always lingering on Emma..” Oh please, first of all this guy was such an ass I can’t fathom why either of these girls wanted him. I guess when there is a shortage of men you will go for anything. Also, I never bought the supposed “love” between Emma and Gray. In the first chapter so much is done to enforce her distaste with his character and the fact that she has always had a thing for his older brother, Blaine. But once Blaine is heisted Emma and Gray immediately get up to all sorts of tomfoolery and are claiming love in a matter of days. I knew that he always had a thing for her, but her mood switch was far too abrupt to be believable.
Speaking of believable (ha notice a trend here? Worst transitions ever, that is the trend.) The conveniences that popped up here and there to advance the plot were just way too perfect. Breaking into a final room and all of a sudden someone pops up that you had no idea existed prior to that scene who is on the right side in the right place at the right time, it was just far too easy. The novel comes with it’s fair share of twists but none of them felt that way because it was so easy to see what was coming a mile away. There is so much of the story that is just way too typical for the genre that it didn’t stand out at all.
This is definitely not a novel that I can recommend. With a flood of dystopians hitting the shelves there has to be something special for one to stand out and this one just doesn’t pack the punch that it needs to. It’s terribly cliche, and is full of dialogue that feels uncomfortable and forced. If I can give you one tip for your Spring reading list it would be to avoid Taken as best as you can.

Ouch. That's all I have to say. Oh and I won't be reading this one. Great review with awesome points though!
ReplyDeleteOh man... My ARC is sitting here ready to bite me, and I am so scared to pick it up! Sounds like another frustrating book hidden behind a lovely cover. I'm disappointed already. Thanks for your honest review. :) At least I know what to expect.
ReplyDelete- Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl
Its a shame as the premise sounds so good and you're right, it is a fantastic cover :(
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear! There are many dystopian books I wish I could say I never read. Thank you for helping me not read this one. :)
ReplyDeleteI always think flawed characters are okay, but not when those flaws aren't properly acknowledged. It's also pretty impossible for me to enjoy a book if I don't particularly like the main character. Gray sounds awful, to put it simply. Sorry this didn't work out for you Jenni, though a part of me isn't too surprised given the number of negative reviews I've seen for this book. I've lost all my interest in it.
ReplyDeleteLovely review as always!
You and Giselle just LOVE to one-star every book that has interested me forever lol :D Hahahaa, Grey is such a d-bag and I wish I meant it as a compliment like I'd say it to Kellan, Matt, Evan or Griffin from S.C. Stephens' Thoughtless series, but no! He is a douche. Ugh... And Giselle already discussed the awful love triangle and lol, you just made it seem so immature and laughable. Oh, boy.. Here go my thoughts on reading this one..
ReplyDeleteIt's actually interesting in that we offer the same opinions on exactly the same points in our reviews. I really had high hopes for this book, but, I too had major difficulties in reading it. Guess we won't be reading the second book!
ReplyDeleteLove your review and agree on a lot of this. I did not care for Emma once they left Clayroot so I was thankful for the triangle! Totally agree Gray was an arse, but felt I understood him a little more.
ReplyDeleteI think I Great is one of those characters that I might pull hair out over, so no thank you. ;D I think I will be staying away from this one.

I liked this one a little more than you, but yeah... so many issues. That love triangle may have pissed me off more than any other when it hit. >.<

I hate reading a book where I just can't like the main character ... I mean, I should be able to identify with them in SOME ways, you know? And I also hate it when things happen TOO perfectly in a story to make it advance ... that really irks me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review, Jenni!
Well, clearly this was not the book for you Jenni! Your reaction to Gray made me laugh:) I had some problems with this book as well, but I found it far more favorable than you did I think. I actually liked Gray for the most part, I ran into some trouble with Emma though. I found it interesting enough to continue the series, but I had a blast reading your review, it's fun to read a different opinion!
ReplyDeleteYeah, this isn't the first negative review I read about this book. I've actually changed my shelve on goodreads from "to read" to "lost interest". I'm definitely going to stay away from this book. Gray sounds like a horrible character and I don't want to deal with him. There are far better Dystopians waiting for me,
ReplyDeleteMel@thedailyprophecy
Sorry to hear that you didn't like this, Jenni! Like Mel, this isn't the first negative review I've seen so far - Taken seems to be receiving plenty of mixed ones as well, so I'm kind of hesitant as to whether I should pick up this book when it's released. Such a shame. It had such a promising premise! Your thoughts about Gray are quite similar to <a href="Giselle's, too. So even though the plot may be interesting, I doubt I'd enjoy the story much with such a half-assed character. And that quote? Ugh. What a jerk.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review! Definitely prepared me for what to expect if I ever pick this book up (unlikely).
Oh man, your review and Giselle's review have me cracking up. Mine is pretty much the same, but I liked it a teeny bit more. It got a 2 out of me. I don't tend to finish books that will get less than that. Gray was awful. Probably one of my most hated MC's I've read.
ReplyDelete*winces* I'm all for flawed characters, if there is growth and redemption ahead. But how can you like a book is you despise the main character?
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Jenni!
I have been curious about this book and I'm glad I read your review before buying it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYeah... *sighs* That's pretty much how I felt about this train-wreck. I rated it a both higher mostly because I managed to finish and I so rarely give 1-star ratings, but it came VERY close. Pathetic.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Gray was just too unlikeable, and the love triangle (umm, rectangle, since Emma had that dude?) drove me crazy. I also agree that Bowman handled plot progression like an amateur.
Ah, well. better luck next time.
Great review, though, Jenni, transitions and all. ;)
I keep going back and forth on whether I want to read this one. I started it and set it aside, and I've read such wildly mixed reviews I don't know what to think. But it seems that the majority of people have major issues with Gray and with the plot holes. But cliches and forced dialogue puts me over the top. I think I'm going to skip it. Too many quality books in my tbr, and life is too short. Thanks for your honest review!
ReplyDeleteGray sounds like a guy with lots of frustration and anger and I wonder if there was any character development for him in this book. Thanks for taking the time to write out your thoughts, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteHuh, I think I'll skip it. The MC sounds like he'd drive me insane in a matter of minutes.
ReplyDeleteIs it bad that I love these 1 star reviews? I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a good review for this book yet and although I love me some asshole guys, this one just…no. I don’t think I can do it.
ReplyDeleteSkipping this one!
Very disappointed with the Harper Teen books so far this year…
"Worst transitions ever, that is the trend." Bahaha. That random woman at the end. That was just bizarre like she pops out of nowhere and then when they leave she's never mentioned again. Ugh and the twists were just overwhelming. Like, there were SO many characters were weren't who we thought they were that it was just exhausting.
ReplyDeleteBARF ON THIS BOOK!!
I'm sure of one thing... this may not be the book for me.
ReplyDeleteI've read one favorable review, one middle-of-the-road review, and two bad ones.
This is such a bummer. I clicked request without even really reading the synopsis after seeing that pretty cover, but I have yet to see a positive review. At this point, I may not even bother, but I hate not getting to ARCs.
ReplyDeleteUgh ok so I am absolutely passing on this one. Removing it from the reading list all together. Both yours & Giselle's reviews were enough to say that I can't for the life of me imagine liking anything that's going on in this thing. I already loathe Grey and I need to be able to at least relate to or like an MC but this douche? No way.
ReplyDeleteAnyways sorry you had to go through that & thanks for the insightful review!
xox
This is a great review! I saw this cover ages ago and was intrigued. I first read your review of this on Goodreads, and thought it really insightful. I agree, there is so much dystopian and it needs to be spectacular for me to pick it up these days! Bummer this was a disappointment.
ReplyDeleteBoo! This one sounds terrible. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, this review worries me! I'd been reading so many great reviews of Taken, and love Erin from Publishing Crawl, so I pre-ordered the book. Now this review ... makes me question whether that was a good idea. A badly constructed love triangle drives me batty. The only time I enjoy them is when it's done like Megan Shepherd's The Madman's Daughter -- where the love interests represent something greater than just cute boys fighting over the MC's affection.
ReplyDeleteI also am not a huge dystopian fan ... but I was hoping for a good male MC. Those are rare in YA and I do enjoy them -- when done well.
Great review, regardless of how much it makes me worry!
Oh boy. I actually also had this one for review from Edelweiss, but my reading device (my iPod Touch) died and I wasn't able to transfer the galley to a new reading device. But after reading your review, I truly feel like I dodged a bullet!! That love triangle would drive me up the wall, so I am very glad I won't have to endure it like you did. Yikes. Well, at least I did enjoy reading your review for this anyways!
