1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…
I’ve never been a big fan of sci fi, I have to admit that up front. When I look back at movies that I have watched and liked in the genre it’s more so the ones that come across as predominantly horror more than sci fi. There’s something about other beings living out there somewhere that absolutely frightens me. Then when you add in the fact that they are possibly much more advanced than us and could be lurking in places we don’t know, yikes! What I am trying to say is that I am fascinated at the idea of aliens. With The Rules, Stacey Kade has taken that idea and created a circumstance that made it feel more real than I could imagine and she did so quite well.

Ariane has known for the last 10 years that she isn’t really Ariane. She was rescued from the lab in which she was created and living in disguise out in the open, blending in with the population. I hadn’t known going into this that she was part extraterrestrial so as I found that out it was pretty exciting (had I just read the blurb I would have known, but you know how that goes.) I really liked Ariane. She was snarky and willing to defy people for what she believed was right. Her strong need to protect people who are being bullied made me respect her. I also loved how funny she was as she pieced together what it meant to be human and compared those things to daytime soap opera’s & cartoons that she had seen. I also came to really like the boy that she falls for, Zane. The story hops back and forth from Ariane’s POV to Zane’s and I think the method worked really well here. Each voice felt unique to themselves and I never had to question whose chapter I was reading at the time. Zane was the hot boy at his school, but he had so much going on inside that he became so much more than that. He was so sweet with Ariane and he had a lot to deal with at home with his not so great father.

One thing I wish that we got more of here was backstory. I was told that Ariane was half human, half extraterrestrial but I never got information on how that experiment came to be. Roswell is mentioned in passing but I would have liked some more detail into what GTX was and how they managed to get away with as much as they did. While I did appreciate that The Rules had a more contemporary feel with sci fi elements in that much of the focus was on the drama at Ariane’s school, I don’t think the balance was achieved very well. Much of the story is focussed on petty high school pranks (which was fun to read about, don’t get me wrong) but I think there should have been more focus on what led to Ariane’s existence and instead of constantly mentioning GTX I wanted to know exactly what the company was.

Reading through this review is funny, because in the beginning I said that I like sci fi that doesn’t really focus on sci fi but then I say I wanted more in the book. I’m someone who likes to have all the details and have my questions answered. Knowing that this is the first book in the series I know that those questions may be answered as the series progresses and I hope that is the case. If you are looking for a light science fiction read that comes across as more contemporary then this could be the one for you. I had a fun time reading it and am excited to read more in the series.

  1. I love sci fi, but I have to admit that I'm a huge alien fan. I feel like they are overused. I like them to be in it, but not the main focus. I'm weird like that, but this one does sound like something that I would really, possibly enjoy! Great review!

  2. Although the characters sound great, I'm not sure how I feel about the lack of backstory. I think in a story like this, it's important to clearly define the background. Still, glad to hear that you enjoyed this. I might just borrow a copy from the library.
    Lovely review, Jenni! :)

  4. I enjoyed this one overall (more than I thought I would when it became obvious that the sci-fi elements weren't too pronounced), but I'm not entirely sure yet if I'll pick up the sequel. I agree that it had a very contemporary feel to it at times, but I too would have liked more backstory. Lovely review, Jenni!

  5. I have to agree with you about the backstory, that part was a bit disappointing. It's like she fell from the sky or something. Well, technically, her mom or dad fell from the sky but that's beside the point.
I AM a sci-fi fan and it's another reason why I was so disappointed in this one. It promised to be so much more than a mean girl thing, and in the end, 80% of the book was about her and Rachel.
Well, I think I also gave it three stars.
    Great review, Jenni!

  6. Meh. I was hoping for more from this. Boo. I like science fiction quite a bit, so if you were unsatisfied with what you got I bet I'll be even more annoyed. Sigh.

ME TOO JENNI!!!! And I agree that I would have liked a little more backstory on GTX and how Ariane came to be, but overall I loved this one. I really liked Zane as did you, and the dual POVs really worked for me. Sometimes they don't, but in this case I thought they added a lot to the story. I'm not sure I would have been a fan of Zane without his POV to help, or at least it would have taken me a lot longer to warm up to him:) Loved reading your thoughts, it's fun to read a slightly different opinion!

  8. I'm currently reading this right now, and so far I'm feeling the same way you do about it! I like Ariane, but also wish that the author was revealing more about her - I'm about halfway through - because she kept talking about her life in the lab, but I still have literally zero idea what she really means, or what any history about her. Yeah, I was looking forward to the sci-fi part of The Rules as well, but I'm getting more high school drama. :P It's all right, just unexpected.

Definitely having a fun time reading it as well. Great review as always, Jenni!

  9. LOL Jenny has it up on her blog tomorrow I think :D I um.. I'm more of the type of reader who likes to have all the info like.. I want to know how, why, what, where etc. I'm just nosy like that and since this particular book hasn't interested me so far, I'm pretty sure I won't read it. So when you said that the back story isn't that good then yup I'm no more interested than before. However, I do like the sound of Zane. Gosh, I don't know what is it with bad boys for me?! And sweet at heart and hawt, hawwwtttt guys. Ugh.. My weak point here!! + you said that it's a light sci-fi and I have nothing against that. Cinder was a little too sci.-fi-ish for me I think and that's probably the reason I've put it on hold for now. Anyhow, I'll see what Jenny says in her review and see if maybe she can get my interest in wanting to read this one:)

  10. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan either, but the fact that this book has aspects of contemporary alongside sci-fi, will definitely give me the extra push to give it a try. I definitely like the concept of this book too, and the fact that you didn't have many issues with it, just that you wanted more back story, has definitely encouraged me to try this a lot sooner! Brilliant review Jenni! :)

  11. AHH!! I don't want to read this now because I'm reading this right now. But so far it's alright. Only 35% in so not sure where it's all going to go.

  12. I have gotten more into sci-fi lately so this one really caught my interest. I love that it's got a contemporary feel to it too, since you know I am a big contemp fan!! It's too bad that there were still a lot of things you didn't get much information about, but in general it sounds great! I think I would like this. Awesome review chick!

  13. Ohhh, I really like multiple POV's if they are well-written. Especially since we are jumping back and forth between a girl and a boy :D Ariana sounds like someone I will really like. Yeey for snarky, strong females! And I appreciate her for standing up against bullying.

Great review, I'll definitely read this book when I get the chance!

  15. Hmmm... this book honestly hasn't caught my attention. But I do like books that are contemporary w/scifi elements instead of strictly scifi, so it might suit me.
    Great review, Jenni!

  16. Ariane seems like an interesting character... I seldom read sci-fi but if this is more contemporary than sci-fi, maybe I'll enjoy reading it. Thanks for sharing, Jenni!

  17. I'm also big on having all the details, especially in sci-fi, but I think I could look past that for this book. Ariane and Zane sound like great characters, and the plot definitely sounds pretty interesting. Great review!

  18. Hmm, I don't like having a lot of unanswered questions, so I might skip this one. Great review Jenni!

  19. I like aliens too, as a Doctor Who fan how could I not? Despite wanting more back-story ( a problem i often have..i love deets) this does sound like a good start to the series. Ariane and Zane sound interesting..love your review!

  20. This book sounds totally down my alley. In fact, I requested it on NetGalley ages ago and got accepted... Then for some irritating reason, it disappeared after 3 days after sending it to my kindle. *crosses arms* oh well I'm still going to read this!
Great review! I'm a little wary about just 3 stars but you liked it so it should be fine <3

  21. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, but I do like finding books that are easier on the sci-fi and easy to follow. I think YA books can do that really well. This one does sound pretty interesting!

    Great review, Jenni!

  22. I just got done reviewing a book that also had lack of backstory and that drove me nuts. Other than that this sounds like it could be a decent book. I also saw it on NetGalley and have had it on my radar ever since. I might pick this up if I can find it at a good price or something.
