In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.
Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.
Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.
In the story we have a very vivid dystopian setting painted for us. We meet Sloane who knows that even the smallest outburst of sad emotions could land her spending 6 weeks in The Program and lead to her having everyone she has ever known outside of her family being completely wiped away. She was a great MC, she was an incredibly smart girl who questioned everything around her. I also came to care about her core group of friends and her boyfriend James. James, oh James. He was everything that I look for in a book boyfriend. He was so supportive and fiercely protective of Sloane. These two knew each other inside & out and had been through hell and back together which really had me rooting for their relationship.
There is an immediate intensity to this story as we are thrown into this world and watch Sloane live day to day in hiding. The handlers are constantly around when she is at school and their lingering makes you realize that with a moments notice one of the characters could be taken away to have their memory wiped and be “cured” of their depression. While I won’t talk about this too deeply I have to point out that I really liked the explanation for what led to the suicide epidemic in this story, it is frightening in that it was something that could very well happen in our future, so kudos to Young for that. There are 3 parts to this story (which was cool, yet super weird because each part started back at page 1 & chapter 1, strange right?) All of the parts went together really well and felt as if they were stories that could have held their own apart from the novel.
What I took away from this story is a strong message about true love and how important all of the happenings (the good and the bad) in our lives are in shaping who we are. You can’t just forget all the bad crap in your life and move on because it is a part of you and you don’t really know who you are without it. A story that focusses heavily on relationships, THE PROGRAM is the kick off to a series that I am very excited for. I can’t wait to be in this world again with the characters that I came to really care about. The ending of the novel sets up for some definite excitement and the epilogue had me grinning because it was so well placed. Read this book people, this is going to be a series that you don’t want to miss.

I'm a sucker for true love and … I often need having romance in a book. I didn't expect the romance to be so strong here!!
ReplyDeleteDystopian romance? I'm in!!! I haven't read any books by Young but she seems like a promising author so far, I'll be sure to begin one of her books soon...
ReplyDeleteWonderfully written review, Jenni! The Program seems to have an original premise! <33
Yay - four stars! I haven't been seeing many reviews of this (actually, yours was the first), so I honestly didn't know what to expect. I'm so glad this worked out for you, though. I love how intense the story was, because let's face it: a lot of the dystopians nowadays lack intensity. Can't wait to read this now! Hopefully I can get my hands on a copy because you make it sound so good.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant review, Jenni!
Oh yay!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a good dystopian in forever and I just got this for review last week, so you got me very excited for it, Jenni.
I love the sound of Sloane and James, especially James. He sounds like the kind of guy I like to have in my books. It seems that this book has a great world building and you have no idea how happy that makes me feel!
Lovely review, Jenni! Definitely looking forward to reading this soon.
Great review. I just got this yesterday, and now I can't wait to read it and meet Sloane. :D

Oh you have me super excited for this!!! I will be getting the audiobook next week for review and can't wait!! I hope that the reader is awesome for the audio!!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing some great things about this book lately, so I really want to get my hands on a copy. The whole concept sounds amazing! Awesome review :) The intensity of the story really has me intrigued.

"so here I go, watch me be vague."
ReplyDeleteHaha! I do that all the time Jenni! Usually with the books I like most because, like you, I want to talk about ALL THE THINGS but don't want to spoil anything, so I bust out the metaphors and ramble on and people are probably like "what is she even talking about?". And then by the time I've completed the metaphor or made the analogy, I've often forgotten my point. Well done me. I'm super excited for this book, I'm so glad it got such a high rating for you. I live for books that focus heavily on relationships, so I'm definitely adding this to the list!
I wasn't drawn by the blurb to this story for some reason. But you are the second person I've come across to give this high marks. Maybe I should give this a go. Lovely review, Jenni. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't really wanted to read this book but, I keep seeing great reviews of it so I just might have to check it out!

An intelligent mc and a protective boyfriend? Awesome! I've been really curious about this book, and wasn't sure whether to pre-order it or not. After reading your review I'm thinking that I probably should!
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
Still sounds great! I'm in the mood for a good dystopian. Will have to check this one out, SOON :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE me some vivid settings! AND I ALSO LOVE AN AWESOME BOOK BOYFRIEND!!!!! I also like when books are divided into parts. I really liked how K.A. Tucker did it with Ten Tiny Breaths for instance when she made it like 7 stages of grief. I haven't seen this one reviewed as much out there, but I have seen it around on different TBR lists and I know it's popular. I don't know about the cover, but since the cover doesn't make a good story, the plot, the characters and the emotions do - then based on your review, this is something I'd be interested in. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteGlad that it's four stars from you! It's the sort of blurb that had me thinking the book will either be fab or fall flat in the delivery. Look forward to it now, great review.
ReplyDeleteI just got approved for the eARC of this one yesterday. I don't know if I'll be able to read it before it's release, but your review makes me want to toss everything else out of the way and dig in! I can't at this moment though, darn it!
ReplyDeleteYayyy!! Can't wait to read it!! So many awesome reviews. Gotta get my hands on a copy... And soon! ;) Great review!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds exciting! If you say this has a very vivid dystopian setting, I'm going to get this book. Thanks for sharing, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteSometimes it can be really tough to write a spoiler-free review, especially when you want to rave about it. You still managed to get me excited. I love the sound of the world and the characters! I also like it when a book has a clear message :)
ReplyDeleteMel@thedailyprophecy.
Aren't vague reviews so hard??
ReplyDeleteYou did an excellent job. I honestly had zero interest in The Program, but your last paragraph really reeled me in.
Great review!
Hooray, another positive review for THE PROGRAM! From the premise, I think the world that Young has created definitely sounds different from all of the other dystopians out there, at for that I respect her already. Sloane sounds like a character I will love, and James sounds perf to the perf as well! <3 I can't wait to get my hands on a copy when it comes out. Thanks for the brilliant review, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteI only skimmed this bc I haven't written my review yet and I know you put subliminal messages in yours but in case I forget to come and comment I figured I'd leave this lame shit now. (I always read em after I write my review on GR anyways >.<)
ReplyDeleteYet another book I want to sink into. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteYES!! I love the part where you said that we can`t just forget the bad crap that has happened. I mean... it becomes a part of us, and it`s because of those bad things that change us into who we are today. AWESOME REVIEW! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. Nice review.
ReplyDeleteGreat review Jenni! I really want to read this one, so thanks for alleviating my worries that it might not live up to my expectations.
ReplyDeleteAgh, I hate it when everything I want to say about a book could very well be a spoiler. Sometimes it's hard to tell.
ReplyDeleteI think the most frightening dystopias are the ones that could easily happen. I was never really affected by those walled cities like in Defiance, but rather something like Monument 14, things I can easily imagine. I'm glad Young managed to write something similar. The reviews for this have been great. I'm looking forward to it.
I admit I felt a bit iffy about this one when I first saw it. I seemed like the kind if premise that could easily be hit or miss but now that I've read your review, I really want to read The Program!! I sounds nerve-wracking and addictive all at the same time. I like the sound of the MC and I'm already wanting to know every detail about the creepy and disturbing world the characters inhabit! Fabulous review Jenni, thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteOoh, I really do hate writing that kind of review! You just want to talk about the THINGS but you can't. Very aggravating.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to hear that this dystopian novel has a strong backing and makes sense. I also like the focus on relationships (hopefully more than just romantic ones). It sounds very interesting and unique, so I might have to think about reading it, even though I hadn't planned to do so.
Awesome review! I know exactly what you mean about wanting to talk about things but they're SPOILERS! I just finished this book too and I also loved it! I was surprised by how much romance was in it! I love what you said in the last paragraph of your review.. this book definitely makes you think and there are so many strong messages in it! But at the same time, I never felt like the messages were overbearing.
ReplyDeletelove your review, been wondering bout this book for a while now :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I loved this book but the epilogue was sooooo confusing! Can someone please email me and explain ....ashley.sv@hotmail.com. ! Thanks , great review :)
